October is one of the best times to be in Pensacola and a member of PYC. We begin the month with the Harvest Dinner Dance on October 3 and I hope as many members as possible will attend and support the Club. Please also feel free to bring friends and other guests. Marguerite and the entire committee, Lyn Harrison, Wendi Fairchild, Sondra Solice, Linda Whitman, Johnnie Helms, and Jean Fleege have been working for months on this important annual event for PYC. All auction proceeds will be used to benefi t the Club in a unique and lasting way – to be unveiled after the results are in! Also in October, PYC will host one of our major regattas of the year, the WFORC. We are hopeful that as boats lost or damaged in recent hurricanes get repaired and replaced, we will continue to rebuild participation in such important regattas. In connection with WFORC, PYC and the Florida Commodores’ Association will conduct a Sundowner Ceremony on Saturday the 17th of October. This is open to all members and these ceremonies have been very well received on the special occasions when we have done them. As we look ahead to the many events coming up in October and over the coming holiday season, the membership committee and your Board have been inspired to add some initiatives to invigorate us to add some compatible members. Elsewhere in this Sheet, you will see Jere Allen’s piece outlining the new programs we have approved. Things continue to go well with your Club, and we look forward to seeing you this Fall as we enjoy PYC together. Warm best wishes to everyone, Tim Burr

LEAVE OF ABSENCE STATUS FOR PYC MEMBERS By Bernie Knight, Secretary, Board of Directors

At the last By-Laws revision a couple of years ago there was a complete and thorough rewrite of the paragraph that covers Leave of Absence (LOA) for Regular Members. Essentially that language gives the Board of Directors very broad discretion within certain parameters, for granting LOA status to Regular Members who request it. Those parameters include: (a) temporary relocation from the area, (b) health conditions which affect the ability to use the club facilities, (c) extreme fi nancial hardship, and (d) any other condition that the Board feels is meritorious. LOA status can be for up to 24 months. The By-Laws also lay out benefi ts, responsibilities, and limitations of the member who is on LOA status. While on LOA the member pays no dues or assessment payments, although there may be an annual maintenance fee set by the BOD. While on LOA the member may not use the facilities of the club and will not have any of the benefi ts or privileges of regular membership. The BOD may limit the number of times this classifi cation can be requested by a Regular Member to avoid abuse. However, the language as it was written regarding the responsibilities and limitations of the member who is on LOA status is ambiguous. Your Board has attempted to clarify these parts of the paragraph with an edited version, which will be presented to the General Membership meeting for a vote of approval in November. Specifi cally while a member is on LOA status these changes address: (1) Use of the club facilities clarifi ed – not available, unless the person on LOA status comes in as a member of a group booked in the club facilities for an event, such as Rotary meetings or comes in as the occasional guest of an active Regular Member with a test of reasonableness to prevent abuse. (2) Reciprocal privileges at other clubs - not available. Member must surrender membership card to the club offi ce on entering LOA status. (3) Use of LOA status to duck assessments. Payment of assessments must be brought up to date upon request for reinstatement as a Regular Member.

October ‘09 • Page 3 VICE COMMODORE’S COMMENTS SAM FOREMAN

Some comments have already been made on the great success of the raft-up at the Wharf in Orange Beach. Many boats from PYC and some from other clubs made the scene. There were well over 150 people present having a good time. This has become a PYC signature event. Don’t miss the next one. A group of us from PYC cheered our sailors on at the Liptons held at the Buccaneer Yacht Club. We improved our overall position from last year. Most importantly, however, was the gratitude expressed by each of our sailors to see a PYC burgee in the spectator fl eet. It shows we care and certainly encourages our sailors. It makes me wonder if we could schedule one or more of our raft-ups to some of the away-races and really make our presence known. The reconstruction of our porch has taken on the character of an archeological fi nd. Every move to reconstruct an item uncovers another item that requires fi xing. There are many levels of historical “fi xes” most of which have gone wrong. We feel confi dent we can get this area complete and useable by WFORC. Peter Thorpe, EPA Project Manager for the ACW Superfund site, recently gave an update at Grotto Hall on the “progress” being made toward the remediation of properties in the Sanders Beach area as well as PYC. How disappointed are we? It is as if there was never any discussion between him and us. We will endeavor to continue being civil to our civil servant, however the pressure from us will now be at a higher level. The world is going to know of PYC’s situation and our desire to create an engineered wetland, which we consider to be a compelling and elegant solution.

membership report JERE ALLEN I recall reading an article not long ago that “Membership” is the life blood for any club. It must always be renewed to maintain the vigor of the club. Here at PYC, we certainly have a full and active membership. However, we have noted for the last couple of months that our rate of new members joining PYC has slowed. I suspect that this is due in a large part to the busy schedule of the summer months; last minute vacations; the return of children to schools; and some due to the slow down in the economy. With the coming of fall, these activities are behind us, the economy is turning around, and there is a full schedule of events on the horizon at PYC. So now it is a good time for our membership to reach out to friends and business associates to encourage them to become members of PYC. Bring your friends to the club and let them see the variety of activities for new members to participate in and enjoy. The Harvest Dinner Dance, Yachting Seminars, Ladies Fashion Show Luncheon, WFORC Regatta, Thanksgiving Dinner, Chef Daro’s Food and Wine Demos, Sailor’s Banquet, and the New Year’s Eve Dance are just a few of the events that you can bring prospective members to as guests. NEW MEMBER PRIMARY SPONSORS RECEIVE $500 CREDIT To help stimulate PYC’s members to reach out and get that friend to join our Club, the Board of Directors, has agreed to increase the incentive for your recruitment effort to $500 credit at PYC (food, drink, and ship store) for every approved active member you sponsor to join the Club. This is a limited time offer that will begin on October 1 and end on April 1, 2010. What a deal, you get to show off PYC, enjoy the activities with a good friend and get paid at the same time! NEW CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP Another area for new membership at PYC is within your fi rm or company work place. The Board of Directors has created a Corporate Membership plan to allow you to reach out to your fellow business associates. The Corporate Plan allows for the 1st new member to join for $1,500 membership fee, the 2nd for $1,000 and all others for $500. In order to qualify for this plan, they must be from the same company, business, practice group or fi rm and the fi rst three people must join at the same time, after that, memberships from the same entity are $500 each. The normal application process for each individual membership is required. NEW MEMBERSHIP PAYMENT PLAN FOR YOUNG ADULTS It has come to the Membership Committee’s attention that the membership fee for Young Adults is a large amount for them to pay at one time. Consequently, the Board has adjusted the fee schedule for all age classifi cations with Young Adults to 50% at the time of joining and the balance spread over 12 months. As an example; a fee for a 30 yr. old Young Adult is $1,000, $500 will be paid at the time of joining and $500 spread over 12 months. We hope that this will ease the fi nancial burden for our prospective Young Adult members. Page 4 • October ‘09 HOSPITALITY GWEN HERRIN & JEAN FLEEGE

The photos in this month’s Jib Sheet are outstanding, thanks to our members who are never without their cameras at a PYC event. Don Rock, Jim and Linda Oyler caught many of our members enjoying the biggest raft-up of the season at the Wharf. Party girl, Diana Mayo was snapping photos of members at the Jamaica Me Crazy party and on Friday Night at the Club. Julie Connerley is always catching the racing action on the water. Plus our Junior Sailing parents are great at submitting photos of our Juniors sailing on the Bay here at home or representing the Club at different sailing events. Thanks for the memories! They are very much appreciated by the Editor. CLUB EVENTS THIS MONTH Don’t forget to make your reservations for the Harvest Dinner Dance and Silent Auction beginning at 6pm on Saturday, October 3. Put on your dancing shoes, black tie is optional for the guys, long gown or cocktail dress is ladies choice, and groove to the sounds of The Reunion Band at this annual Club event. Lead singer, Billy Harrell will be sure to belt out his signature song Mustang Sally along with other favorites like a little James Brown for Bob Fleege. This year’s silent auction has some wonderful items including: a two night stay at the Monteleone Hotel in New Orleans, original art, a movie night at the Clark’s in their new home theatre, jewelry, season tickets to the Ballet, antiques, cocktail cruise, ETC, ETC. So reserve a table and bring your friends for a fun evening at the Club. The proceeds from the Silent Auction are used to enhance the Club House, and as we all know, this old House is always in need. Another big event this month is Your Fashion Connection Ladies Fashion Show Luncheon Wednesday, October 28. Brenda Carraway has returned from New York’s Fashion Week with some of the Hot New Fashions along with Newest Trends and Lastest Fashion obsessions. This year’s Chair, Ann Pleune has lined up some great models and has planned a fantastic event including the dashing PYC male model escorts, a surprise musician tinkling the ivories of our piano, lots of door prizes, special favors for everyone, and of course shopping before and after the show. So get your girlfriends together and reserve a table for this event. The social hour begins at 11am and the Fashion Show Luncheon at 12noon. The price is only $20 inclusive per person. Wendi Fairchild, Lisa Stack and Lyn Harrison have planned a fun family event for children called Trunk ‘N Treat on Thursday, October 29. You don’t need children or at least young children to participate. Just decorate your car trunk or tailgate for Halloween and load it with treats. Show up at the PYC parking lot before 5pm when the PYC children arrive dressed in their spookiest, creative costumes to Trunk N’ Treat until 5:45pm when the costume contest begins. After all that fun give Mom a night off and make a reservation to enjoy the Family buffet with your little goblins at the Club before they enjoy too many treats. CATCH UP ON MEMBER NEWS PYC’s Miss Hospitality, Gwen Herrin has been away from the coast visiting her daughter Michelle Holcomb in Tulsa. While she was there, Gwen’s son-in-law Weldon and grandson Thomas fl ew to Scotland for grouse hunting. Apparently there is a very strict dress code for this Scottish sport. Hunters are required to wear a dress shirt, vest, tie, knickers, and special shoes to participate in a grouse hunt. Check out the dandy outfi ts the two Holcombs are wearing in the photo. Past Commodore Roger Moraski and his wife, Betsy enjoyed having their two sons, Nicholas and Andrew home for a visit. We were able to snap a quick picture of Roger and the boys on Friday night at the Club. We were saddened to hear of the death of PYC member, Anne Oerting, who lost her long battle with Alzheimer’s disease on September 16. Mrs. Oerting played a huge role as “Commodress” here at PYC and later with the GYA during her husband, John Oerting’s tenure as PYC Commodore in 1982, and GYA Commodore in 1990. Anne was a lovely lady who was loved dearly by all and adored by her husband of 60 years Past Commodore John Oerting. She will be terribly missed. PYC member John Decker passed away last month on September 14 after a valiant fi ght with cancer. He is best remembered for his love of fi shing and PYC. The Club was one of his favorite places to gather with friends to share stories and a few laughs. He will be sadly missed.

Our Lipton Challenge Cup Team, Doug Sansom, Dodge Rees, Eddie Adams and Hunter Riddle represented PYC very well at the Buccaneer Yacht Club over the Labor Day weekend. PYC placed 8th overall in a fl eet of 20 boat from GYA Clubs along the Gulfcoast in diffi cult light and shifting wind conditions on Mobile Bay. We saw our teams go from fi rst place at the fi rst upwind (Eddie Adams), to the fl eet shifting fi ve or six places on the next Eddie Adams and crew Dominic Johnson and downwind leg. Photo by Tim Burr Yacht Clubs topped the competition with very consistent fi nishes at or near the top in every race. Your Commodore Tim Burr, Vice Commodore Sam Forman and Fleet Captain Alan McMillan, as well as Doug Sansom, provided shore support. Past Commodores Ron Richards and John Matthews attended their GYA duties and also supported the PYC team. The PYC Championship #3, the Seabouy Race was held on

September 26. This is the only series race that is not eligible as Sailing icons Past Commodore Chuck Smith and Doug Sansom relax on the deck of PBYC a throw out. Following it is a really big PYC Regatta event, the after competing in the Big Mouth Regatta. WFORC on October 16, 17 and 18. PYC will roll out our best race Photo by Julie Connerley management, with Betsy Moraski Chairing this important three day Fall GYA event. Lots of PYC and other Pensacola sailors will duke it out with the best from around the GYA in PHRF boats. PYC will once again host a fl eet of Flying Tigers for the WFORC. This fl eet is considering staying for the November Jubilee Regatta and perhaps the December Santa Claus. It was great to see them lined up on the grass outside the dry storage area last year and we hope they continue to make PYC their Fall/Winter racing home. PBYC Fleet Captain David Johnson, PYC SAILING AWARDS SUNDAY, DECEMBER 6 Members Past Commodore Charlie Brooks and Doug Sansom share stories and smiles It is also time to start thinking about our annual presentation of after PBYC’s Big Mouth Regatta. While still a youngster himself, David’s father Chuck, sailing awards. In the past, the busy holiday schedule has pushed sailed with Charlie. Chuck was also college roommate and sailing pal with Doug’s older this event into the end of January. This year, we have reserved the brother, Jerry. Photo by Julie Connerley evening of Sunday, December 6, for our awards presentation. Festivities begin at 6 PM with a heavy hors d’oeuvre reception followed by trophy and award presentations. The entire event is expected to last no longer than two hours. The Junior Sailing awards will be given fi rst so that they may leave early if they wish (after all, Monday is a school day!). Following the Juniors, we will recognize our adult sailors. We have awarded Brag Flags at the conclusion of each racing event this year; consequently, the “Silverware” will be presented on December 6. If up to four boats entered a racing class, only a First will be presented. If fi ve to seven entered, a Second place award will also be presented. When more than seven boats entered, then a Third place award will also be presented. Please reserve a table and invite your entire crew, families and friends to enjoy the annual culmination of the sailing season. Dress is casual.

PYC’s summer sailing program has sparked an interest in so many new Junior Sailors. Since school has started it has not slowed the passion of our new generation of sailors to improve their skills and race. On Wednesday afternoons the PYC Juniors are rigging at 5:00pm ready for racing at 5:30pm with coaching until sunset. Please join us at PYC for dinner and watch the 20 plus single-handed sailors race on the bay until sunset. It is such a joy to see young smiling faces launch their boats eager to fi ll their sails with Fall winds. After the races, eat hamburgers hot off the grill while sharing stories among other sailors of their races, experiences and tactics. Due to PYC’s growing fl eet of sailors, we are in need of volunteers to be on land to help sailors launch and recover their boats. If you own a boat and are interested in assisting as a safety boat, please contact me. It’s a great time to enjoy an afternoon on the Pensacola Bay and watch our future generation of PYC sailors. The Lee Stitt PYC Junior Championship Regatta and the John Chappell Memorial Regatta will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2009. Commodore John Matthews will be the PRO (principal race offi cer) with our many dedicated volunteers on the Race Committee to run the races starting at 11:55am. Please contact me to reserve a boat for your PYC Junior Sailor for this event. At dusk a Disney fi lm Morning Light will be shown on the lawn, so bring a blanket and enjoy an adventure at sea on the big screen. It will be fun for the whole family. PYC’s October racing schedule will include the WFORC (Oct16-18), and the Schreck Regatta (Oct 24), a Capdevielle event, raced on ’s. There are many other one-design regatta’s which our Junior Sailors will be traveling to and competing in through the Christmas season. Our PYC junior sailors have opened the eyes of other sailors as top competitors on the one-design sailboats. We congratulate them on their endless pursuit to be the best and bringing home the silver from almost every event they compete. GULF COAST CHAMPIONSHIP The Laser Gulf Coast Championship was held at Southern Yacht Club 28- 29 August. PYC’s Dodge Rees fi nished fi rst in the class over thirty other sailors who came in from all over the East Coast to race. Dodge earned two bullets on the second day of the regatta to score the Grand Prix points. In addition, PYC sailors, Adrian Pereira. Brandon Addison, Eric Amos, and Mallory Buechler competed in the select fi eld. SARASOTA LABOR DAY REGATTA Four PYC Junior Sailors attend the Sarasota Labor Day Regatta held Sept. 5-6. Adrian Pereira, Brandon Addison, Eric Amos, and Mallory Buechler had a great time racing in the Laser Radial class against sailors from all over South Florida. Due to light winds all weekend, they only completed one race on Saturday and two races on Sunday. ROCK-PAPER-SCISSORS REGATTA Craig Cantley, Michael Rice, and Gorham Partington competed in the Birmingham Sailing Club’s Rock-Paper-Scissors Regatta on September 5 & 6. Craig received the sportsmanship award for the Championship Fleet (combined Red & Blue & White Fleets) and they all learned something about the challenges of very light air lake sailing! Craig and Michael sailed in the Blue Fleet (ages 11 & 12), and Gorham sailed in the White Fleet (ages 10 & younger). Gorham and Michael fi nished within one point of each other at 15th & 16th respectively in the Championship, and Craig fi nished 23rd. Sailing clinic’s and adult sailing lessons are underway, please contact me for information and reservations. [email protected] or (850)433-8804 ext. 111.

Wow! That is the only word that can describe the raft-up weekend at The Wharf. Over 150 people from 50-some boats enjoyed food, libations, and great camaraderie throughout the weekend. On Friday evening we were welcomed by Gulf Coast Hatteras with a cocktail party. Later that night, the karaoke bar was the place to be. Who knew PYC had such talent? Then Saturday morning after a delicious breakfast, Gulf Coast Hatteras and our own Beverly Rock presented boating seminars. Both were quite interesting and informative. I might add that Beverly’s “Weather or Not” presentation was especially timely, as we woke up to Tropical Storm Claudette on Sunday morning. Bev also challenged our knowledge of lighthouses with a test, which Rear Commodore Scott Harrell promptly aced. That afternoon most of us hung out in the Lazy River. What could be more fun than fl oating along an endless “river” in an inner tube? The wave pool, the hot springs pool, and the huge kiddy pool were also available options. Saturday evening found us at a delightful cocktail party sponsored by Galati. After dinner there was more karaoke. I understand some stayed out way too late on Saturday night. Sunday morning brought the unpleasant surprise of Claudette possibly making landfall near Pensacola within 12-24 hours. Breakfast was canceled as everyone hurriedly made preparations to return home or fi nd a safe anchorage in which to ride out the storm. We are very happy to report everyone returned safely. A boatload of thanks goes to everyone who helped make this a successful raft up adventure. Ed Helms did a great job chairing the event. Bob and Vicki Riggs were tireless in their many scouting trips to The Wharf. Thanks to Karen Allen and her helpers for a great breakfast on Saturday. Linda Whitman did a great job with the t-shirts and name tags. Beverly Rock, with a little help from Don, gave us a very interesting seminar. Also a big thanks goes to everyone who helped transport “stuff” to The Wharf and back. What a great group of friends we have at PYC! Next raft-up is in Little Sabine on October 31 where we will enjoy the Halloween Party and haunted house at PBYC. See you there! CENTERBOARDS & SWABBIES LYN HARRISON Finally! School routines are in full swing, but don’t think we’re going to put our Yacht Club fun on hold. MOVIE ON THE LAWN: Following the Chappell-Stitt Junior Sailors Regattta on Saturday, October 10, the Centerboards & Swabbies are planning a Movie on the Lawn. Pray for fair weather for both the regatta and movie! The movie is Morning Light, a Disney movie about rookie sailors training for the Transpac Yacht Race. It’s rated PG for some language. You can learn more about the movie by visiting the Disney website. We are coordinating this family friendly event with the PYC Junior Sailing Program. We are still working on the menu, so check the PYC website and watch for emails with details. Everyone is invited to join us for this fantastic evening. TRUNK ‘N TREAT FOR PYC KIDS: A take off on Trick OR Treat we are planning a Trunk ‘N Treat for PYC children on Thursday, October 29 at 5pm. After Trunk ‘N Treating from the trunks of member’s cars a kid friendly costume contest will be held at 5:45pm. Don’t forget to reserve a table for your little ghosts and goblins and enjoy the PYC buffet with your family. Children 10 and under eat FREE. We need members to decorate their car trunks or tailgates for Halloween and load them with loot for this family event. If you are interested please contact Wendi Fairchild at 458.8702. HARVEST DINNER DANCE: And don’t forget to mark your calendars and make your reservations for PYC HARVEST DINNER DANCE with Silent Auction and the fabulous REUNION BAND on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3. Babysitting is available in the Sailing Center. Reserve a table and invite your friends to join you at the Club for a fun night out. This month I want to combine a status report with another plea for photos and help in preserving the Club’s history. NEW HISTORICAL RECORDS DISCOVERED I am happy to report that Jennifer in the club offi ce has located a huge cache of old Jib Sheets, meeting minutes and other important documents. As a result I’m sure many of you have enjoyed reading the historical placemats in the bar area L to R: Alan McMillan, Dudley Sheppard, and Neil McMillan that these old records have generated. However, more important than making entertaining placemats, she has also begun to scan these documents and to save them on an external hard drive in the club saving them for use here onsite. The originals have been moved to our PYC collection at West Florida. DIGITAL COPY OF COMMODORE PHOTOS RECOVERED Several years ago someone had the foresight to scan all the Commodore photos and make digital copies.

However, all the known copies were lost. Jean Russ L to R: Mary Catherine Johnson, Ellen Jane Garner, Nancy and I were distressed to think we would have to tear Jane Campbell, and Ginger Ann McMillan open all those photo frames and do the job again. But, thankfully, Deborah Dunlap has located one of the digital copies and will give the club a new set of discs. You can bet one set will be saved immediately into our collection. LET PYC PRESERVE YOUR HISTORICAL PHOTOS FOR ARCHIVES In addition to getting an external hard drive, the club has purchased a scanner/printer. Our offi ce staff will begin making digital copies of the photos in the Heritage Tom Pace at Helm, Dick Page in Foreground, and Henry Room and those along the upstairs hallway. These are McLaughlin at Left racing White Heather to Cuba in 1948 priceless pictures that have survived the years, but before our luck runs out we want to save digital copies here and at UWF. This scanner will also allow us to copy your old photos and add them to the club archives, but still give you back your originals. So please bring us any photos you have of members having fun on the water or at the club. Enjoy a few of the examples I have collected so far!

At our annual end of summer party unfortunately one of our Sea Scouts, Josh Toquothty was severely injured when he dove off a dock. He is currently in therapy at the Shepherds Spinal Center in Atlanta. Josh and his family are in our thoughts and prayers as we wish him a speedy recovery. This summer the Sea Scouts, Cody King, Crista King, Patrick Sheldon, Adam Valle, Stephen Millar, and Josh Justin have been busy working on the Sea Scout Rebel 16. The old paint has been stripped off the hull and we are currently working on repairing the fi berglass and repainting the boat before launching it. We thank Mr. Schroyer for allowing the Sea Scouts to make the repairs at his home in Cantonment. As we all know, weather plays an extremely important role in the world of sailing. LCDR Jim Marcotte has been instructing the crew over the last several weeks on weather. Once the instruction is complete, the Sea Scouts will have earned their Weather merit badge and will begin taking sailing instruction from PYC Sailing Director, Stephen Wagner. Please support the Boy Scouts of America Sea Scout Ship 411 annual popcorn fundraiser by purchasing some popcorn, magazines, or sending popcorn to our troops overseas. Sea Scout Ship 411 hosted its Open House and visitor day for youth 14 and older wishing to learn about joining our program in September at the Watson Sailing Center. The Sea Scouts youth program is designed to instill values and develop citizenship and leadership skills in a nautical setting. It is open to all youth, male and female, ages 14-20. Regular meetings for Sea Scout Ship 411 are held the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month starting at 1800 (6 PM) in the PYC Sailing Center. For more information call Skipper Eric Fritz at 525.4704 or Kim Sheldon at 479.2629.

Famous Quotes brought to you by Sam Foreman “With all these blessings, what more is necessary to make us a happy and prosperous people? Still one thing more, fellow citizens -- a wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government, and this is necessary to close the circle of our felicities.” -- Thomas Jefferson, from his First Inaugural Address
