Selfridge Air Base Welcomes New Leader: Mammen ‘humbled’ by ceremony to replace retiring Slocum

Close to 1,000 airmen in the 127th Wing at Selfridge Air National Guard Base delivered their first unified salute Saturday to their new commander, BG Rolf E. Mammen. Mammen responded, “Wow, this is quite the honor. This is amazing to look out over everybody here. I’m just humbled to be here.” Mammen took over the Harrison Township base to replace retiring BG John D. Slocum, in a ceremony in a hangar at the base that was also attended by dignitaries, former Air Force brethren and family of both men. Slocum served as commander for more than four years, leading the 2017 effort, albeit unsuccessful, to land the F-35A, increasing the base’s connection to the community and guiding it through its 100th anniversary celebration, also in 2017. Mammen who resides in Grosse Pointe, said while the ceremony honored the transition, it really was about the 1,400 or so airmen in the Wing, about three-quarters of who were standing at attention behind more than 100 people seated in front of the stage. “I see my job first and foremost as to help you do your job,” Mammen told them. “I want to get in the way of any detractor from keeping you from doing your job. That way you can do your job, take care of yourself and take care of your family.” He noted most of the airmen are Traditional members of the Michigan ANG who work in all types of professions and should be recognized for their sacrifice. “They work in the community, they live in the community. They’re our neighbors,” he said. “We cannot get a bomb on target or an aircraft refueled without every one of those members back there doing their job. “What we do isn’t normal. And what we do is not routine. It is not easy. It is hard. It is absolutely necessary. Our communities, our nation depend on us to stand ready as part of our national security structure.” Mammen and speakers said everyone should pay tribute to the approximately 350 Michigan ANG men and women currently deployed overseas, “probably 10 or 12 time zones away.”

MANG BANG 4 JUNE/JULY 2019 Mammen, who had been the Director of Operations at the Headquarters Michigan Air National Guard in Lansing, was promoted from Colonel to Brigadier General earlier Saturday in a smaller ceremony. Prior to his latest assignment, Mammen spent 22 years at Selfridge, serving in many capacities, more recently as vice commander for less than a year in 2016 and before that more than three years as Commander of the 127th Wing Maintenance Group. He also piloted C-26 and C-130 aircraft at Selfridge. He described his reaction when Major General Leonard W. Isabelle, Jr., Assistant Adjutant General for Air and commander of the Michigan Air National Guard, called him to offer him the post. “I think I actually jumped out of my seat and I said, ‘You bet,’ he said. I was ready, I was excited to come back to this organization.” Isabelle praised Mammen’s pedigree and values saying, “He’s always made organizations better.” “He’s my No. 1 choice,” Isabelle said. “He’s tailor-made to be your Wing commander. He has probably the best understanding of the 127th Wing of anybody in the state. You’re in very good hands. His resume is impeccable, but more importantly he lives core values and will demand that of all of you.” Slocum, befitting his reputation, kept his comments brief and direct. He said the airman during his tenure “reached new levels of excellence.” “Men and women of the 127th Wing, you have done exactly what I’ve asked you to do,” he said. “When we started 4-1/2 years ago, you didn’t know what to expect, and I really didn’t know what to expect from you. I had no idea you are as good as you are.” He credited the airmen with setting standards that he said makes the Wing the best in the country. Under Slocum, there were more than 2,400 deployments of wing members. “Everybody in here is a warrior,” he said. “It has been my pleasure, my honor to serve you.” The event was attended by U.S. Rep. Andy Levin and Tony Forlini, former state representative and current aide to U.S. Rep. Paul Mitchell, among others. Forlini praised Slocum who began when Forlini was in the Legislature, for his efforts to reach out and get things done. He was special,” Forlini said after the ceremony. Sgt. Dan Heaton served as the master of ceremonies. Members of Slocum’s and Mammen’s families were presented bouquets of flowers. (Source: The Macomb Daily, Sunday, 5 May 2019, page 1A and 4A)

Among the units engaged is the 2nd Mississippi Volunteer Infantry against elements of the famous "Iron Brigade" (often referred to as the "black hats" due to the distinctive Hardee hats most of the men wore). The brigade was composed of the 2nd, 6th, 7th Wisconsin, 19th Indiana and 24th Michigan volunteer infantry regiments. In a sharp engagement in the woods near the McPherson's Farm, nearly half of the 2nd Wisconsin are killed, wounded or captured. Ground combat forces, operating over roadless jungle-covered mountains and swamps, demonstrated their courage and resourcefulness in closing with an enemy who took every advantage of the nearly impassable terrain. Air forces, by repeatedly attacking the enemy ground forces and installations, by destroying his convoys attempting reinforcement and supply, and by transporting ground forces and supplies to areas for which land routes were non-existent and sea routes slow and hazardous, made possible the success of the ground operations. Service units, operating far forward of their normal positions and at times in advance of ground combat elements, built landing fields in the jungle, established and operated supply points, and provided for the hospitalization and evacuation of the wounded and sick. The courage, spirit, and devotion to duty of all elements of the command made possible the complete victory attained."

After discussion with Adjutant General Roy Vandercook, Ferris mobilized the entire state National Guard and sent the units to the Upper Peninsula mining communities in an effort to keep the peace during the strike. Some elements of the Guard remained on duty as the strike lasted well into 1914.

MANG BANG 15 JUNE/JULY 2019 From the Archives Byron Quimby Jones: First Base Commander, Selfridge Field By Lori Nye Byron Q. Jones was born near Henrietta, New York on 9 April 1888; following a move to the Rochester, New York area, he graduated from Public School 24 and East High School. Jones studied at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was appointed to the United States Military Academy by Representative James Breck Perkins of New York, entering the Class of 1911 on 15 June 1907. Because of punishment he received from a hazing incident of the Class of 1912, he and other upper classmen were dismissed from the academy, but later reinstated & suspended by President Theodore Roosevelt until 15 June 1909. Following his suspension, Jones and the others rejoined the class that they had hazed, on 1 February 1909 and graduated 27th in a class of 95, on 12 June 1912. Jones, pictured here, circa 1915, entered active duty and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 14th Cavalry where he later volunteered for pilot instruction. He was then detached to the Aeronautical Division, U.S. Signal Corps and was assigned to the Signal Corps Aviation School in San Diego, California on 5 December 1913. Lt. Jones was taught to fly by a civilian instructor and was assigned to the 2nd Company, 1st Aero Squadron, where he was placed immediately on flight status following his earning the rating of Junior Military Aviator. He remained on active duty assigned to the 1st Aero Squadron until September 1915, when he returned to MIT for a post-graduate course in aeronautical engineering. While at MIT, he served with Thomas D. Milling and Virginius E. Clark on the Technical Aero Advisory and Inspection Board, testing aircraft and balloons at the Curtis Aviation School in Virginia. During 1915, he set two flight duration records and received the Mackay Trophy. On 2 July 1915 at San Diego, he became the first army pilot to execute a loop and stall an airplane without crashing and on 12 December he executed a tail spin. He was flying a S.C. 30, a Curtis J Tractor on both of these flights. He was temporarily assigned to Brownsville, Texas where he flew army aerial reconnaissance missions under combat conditions where he flew to record the movements of Pancho Villa and record the location of Villa’s troops. He & Milling became the first American military pilots to come under fire, while flying these sorties, though they were on the American side of the Rio Grande. He served for a brief time with the 1st Aero Squadron after the squadron relocated to Fort Sill, Oklahoma. While at Fort Sill, following the injury of the detachment commander while flying the Curtiss JN-2 airplane, Jones was made acting detachment commander. In this role, he filed a report that the JN-2 was too inherently dangerous to use as a military aircraft, which resulted in the grounding of these planes and by January 1916 discontinuing their use in the Aviation Section. In 1916, he was promoted to First Lieutenant serving with the Field Artillery at San Diego where he taught aeronautical theory to pilot candidates and provided engineering support to the 1st Aero Squadron in Mexico with the Punitive Expedition and as Officer-in- Charge of Engineering and Repair.

MANG BANG 16 JUNE/JULY 2019 While still at the Aviation School in May 1917, he was promoted to Captain, Field Artillery in the first wave of officers receiving promotions following entry by the United States into World War I. He later reported to temporary staff duty in Washington, D.C., assisting in the standardization of airplane specifications for the aviation services of the Army and the Navy. On 30 June 1917, Jones reported to the newly leased aviation field at Mount Clemens, Michigan, which was soon renamed Selfridge Field, where he organized and commanded an Aviation School. After reaching the legal requirement of three years experience as a Junior Military Aviator, he was awarded the advanced pilot rating of Military Aviator, one of the first in the Aviation Section to do so. He continued in his duties at Selfridge until October 1917 when he received a temporary commission as lieutenant colonel in the Signal Corps. In November of that year, he returned to Washington, D.C. to serve as the Chief of Air Service Training until April 1918 when the Division of Military Aeronautics was created to remove aviation from the purview of OCSO. He was then immediately sent to Europe to observe the training methods of British, French, and American aviation schools. He returned from Europe, June 1918 and was assigned to the office of the Director of Military Aeronautics, which had replaced the Aviation Section as the nation’s air arm. As a result he was reverted to his permanent rank of Captain when his Signal Corps commission was discharged on 9 July 1918. His new duties included service with the Engineering Division at the Wilbur Wright Field, Fairfield, Ohio, testing and evaluating new aviation equipment. In November 1918, he was once again promoted to lieutenant colonel (temporary, Air Service) and assigned as officer-in-charge of all testing and evaluation. Following an extended leave of absence, he returned to military duties in October 1920, completing his assignment to the Air Service in April 1921. He was sent to the Philippines where he served as commanding officer of the 4th Composite Group until July 1923 when he returned to Washington, D.C. and the office of Chief of Air Service serving as Assistant Chief of Supply Group, a position he held until March 1925, when he became Chief of Property and Requirements Section. During November and December 1925 he served as technical advisor to the prosecution during the court martial proceedings against Brigadier General Billy Mitchell. In 1926, he was assigned as a member of the Air Corps and served as a student officer of the Army Industrial College, which was followed by a tour as student officer at the Command and General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Following graduation, he was assigned as Air Officer, Seventh Corps Area, Omaha, Nebraska until May 1928. He then attended Army War College, Washington, D.C., graduating July 1929 and was immediately assigned to the G-2 Division of the War Department General Staff. He organized the newly activated 8th Pursuit Group at Langley Field, Virginia, June 1932 and commanded it until February 1934. Following cancellation of the contract between the U.S. Post Office and commercial airlines by President Franklin D. Roosevelt because of scandals, Jones was placed in charge of the eastern zone of the Army Air Corps Mail Operations, establishing his headquarters at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, New York and later at Mitchel Field, Long Island, New York. Following the mail operation, he was given command of the 2nd Bombardment Wing, Langley Field, November

MANG BANG 17 JUNE/JULY 2019 1934. In March 1935, the 2nd Wing became part of the General Headquarters Air Force and command of it carried the rank of brigadier general. Jones was not selected to fill the new billet. Dispossessed of his command he was assigned to the General Staff’s War Plans Division and placed on the faculty of the Army War College, being promoted to the permanent rank of lieutenant colonel in August 1935 and the temporary rank of colonel the following year. In March 1938, Jones was offered command of the 18th Wing in Hawaii which included temporary promotion to brigadier general, but Jones declined the position. He remained senior instructor at the Army War College until September 1939, when he returned to ground forces as commander of the 13th Cavalry (Mechanized) at Fort Knox, Kentucky. In November 1939, he left the Air Corps and transferred back to the Cavalry branch as a lieutenant colonel. With the expansion of the Army leading up to participation in World War II, Jones transferred to Providence, Rhode Island to become Anti-tank Officer of the 6th Army Corps where he was stationed when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Jones received promotion to permanent colonel in February 1942 and in July was ordered to the Southwest Pacific Area where he served until February 1943 during the Guadalcanal Campaign. In March 1943, he began his final career assignment at Camp Picket, Virginia as commanding officer, Special Troops, Second Army to August 22, 1943. Byron Q. Jones retired from the U.S. Army on 31 January 1944 with a line-of-duty medical disability. Jones was an inventor and was issued several patents: a steering by driving mechanism, granted 17 June 1941; a multiple differential, granted 3 November 1942; an armored vehicle body, granted 28 September 1943; possibly a diaphragm muffler, granted 22 March 1927; possibly a wind indicating airways beacon, granted 27 June 1933. In all of these patents, except that of the muffler, all manufacture and use was granted to the government without payment of royalties. Jones also filed a patent, which was granted April 1942, for a Military Vehicle Body, which covered various aspects of the design and construction of the Jeep body, though the first major production series of this quarter-ton truck known as the “Jeep” had been the design submitted by Willys. Byron Q. Jones died 30 March 1959 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center of a heart ailment. He was predeceased by less than a year by his wife, Evelyn Kennerly Chadwick Jones, whom he had married on 4 June 1917, shortly after the United States entered World War I. (Note: For additional information and a great story, read Dan Heaton’s book, Forgotten Aviator: The Byron Q. Jones story.)

Go-Fund-Me

The Selfridge Military Air Museum has launched a “Go-Fund-Me” initiative to raise funds for improvements to the Museum’s infrastructure. We’re hoping that we will be able to build a “new” home for the USMC FG-1D Corsair that is currently being restored by our restoration team. Please help if you can!! Partnership with Texas Roadhouse, Chesterfield Township

The Museum’s first partnership event with the Texas Roadhouse, located on 23 Mile Road, Chesterfield Township, Mich. was a success so we’ve planned another one for 2 December 2019. Please stay tuned for additional information on this upcoming event.

Library Research Team:

The Library Research team is continuing work on the digitization of the photos and documents in our multiple file cabinets and the creation of an index of our archival holdings. Regular volunteers, Pat Williams and Mary Lou Pearsall along with Team Chief, Lori Nye are the ones working on this project. Joe Mazzara is conscientiously and diligently scouring the Museum’s collection of Air National Guard Yearbooks, Selfridge Field history articles and books, and the Internet on his research to build a biographical sketch of the Base Commanders @ Selfridge Field from its beginning through the present day. Patrick, our newest volunteer, because of his expertise as an architect, has been re-assigned to the Special Projects Team under Assistant Director, Bob Hudson. Team Chief, Lori Nye will tackle the inventory of the

MANG BANG 21 JUNE/JULY 2019 existing book collection and rebuild an accurate listing of the Museum Library’s reference collection adding in all the new titles that have been waiting while the Library Team waits on the upgrade of software/hardware or replacement of the computer used for this project. Now that our ‘open season’ is here, this upgrade will be put on hold once again while Dave Leasia, Team Chief of Information Technology dons his hat as Team Chief of Grounds. The Library Team has sorted a large bag of military patches that was donated to us, sorting out those patches that specifically apply to the history of the squadrons either currently, or once stationed at Selfridge. The rest of the patches will eventually be photographed in batches and uploaded to eBay for sale. The patches pertaining to the history of squadrons at Selfridge will eventually be added to the inventory of artifacts and hopefully make it out on display in the near, not too distant future. In the process of sorting the patches, the Library team responded to a request for information on 191st AMX patches. I scanned the patches I found in the donated ones that may fit this request of Josh Camp and emailed him the image. [CLOSED]. The Library Research Team and Visual Information Team received a request for photos of buildings designed by Albert Kahn. The teams supplied him with photos from the Library’s Archives.. See some of these photos below. [CLOSED] The early construction was designed by Albert Kahn and Walter Tower, Architects from the Detroit area.

Construction of the base in 1917 was done by Walbridge – Aldinger, Builders also from Detroit. Walbridge is still in operation today, celebrating more than 100 years of business. This next photo, though quite a bit later in time, than the first two photos, shows the early construction of the base into the 1930s. The aircraft in the aerial photo to left are Curtiss P-6E Hawks of the First Pursuit Group and the 17th Pursuit “Snow Owls” Squadron. The aircraft in the lower right is believed to be a Boeing P-12B. Hopefully the Selfridge Military Air Museum will receive mention in Chris Meister’s upcoming book on Albert Kahn. (Note: Photos are from the Museum’s Library/Archives. Please do not use without permission.)

Restoration Team:

The Restoration Team led by Darrel Rohrbeck is continuing their steady progress on restoring the Museum’s FG-1D Corsair. Steady progress has been made and one wing is done with maybe some additional minor work, ready to paint, and work is progressing on the 2nd wing. Check out the Museum’s website @ www.selfridgeairmuseum.org, if you’re interested in donating to this worthy cause. The Team Chief’s at their last meeting voted to pursue additional fundraising and quotes for the building of an addition to our SPAD Hangar to house the restored Corsair.

Grounds Team:

The Grounds Team volunteers are back in full swing with grass mowing, weeding the flower beds, and trimming around the aircraft. We’re all hoping for a successful year on getting some projects completed that have been hanging around on the ‘Projects List’ for a couple of years: sump pump area, windows & floors repaired/replaced with awning of trailer installed that house the public restrooms, etc. Hopefully with collaborative effort between the Grounds, Restoration, & Maintenance Teams we can be successful in getting our F-16 restored and replaced on its pedestal following its short, brief flight into the garden at its base, back in the Fall 2017.

Visual Information Team:

Jon Earl, Visual Information Team member has returned from a winter hiatus to continue work on his uniform project that he restarted chronicling a while back. While off on hiatus he was not idle, though, as he continued work on the scanning of large format films from the Library’s archives using his home-based equipment. Next on his to-do list is scanning & indexing 4x6 negatives in the Library’s archives. This project will benefit both the Library Team and Visual Information Team in having a digitized copy of the negatives and an index for easy access to those photos. Team Chief, Rob Sandstrom is taking the summer off from active, on-site volunteering as he is back to work for a few months.

Redesign of Museum Display:

Over the last few months the museum display has been undergoing a redesign. So make sure you stop by during our ‘Open Season’, April through October to check it out! Here are some highlights:

Our ‘temporary display’ team has finally completed a three month project depicting the aircraft of the 107th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron in WW II. The diorama depicts RAF Membury, the airfield that it was initially based out of from 1943 till two weeks after D-Day when it moved to France. Aircraft depicted range from the very first front line fighter (the Spitfire Mk V) thru the different variants of the North American F-6s (Photo Recon versions of the P-51 Mustang). We want to thank the following individuals who made this project a reality:

To Patrick Kopytek and Fred Schwarz, Team Leads who gave this project it's vision and expertise over and above their collective modeling skills. We also salute and thank the master Model Builders: Blane Zublin, Glen Broman, Dr. Bill Kalmar, Kevin Kenny, Ron Lebert, MSgt (Ret'd) James Ashford, CDR Lynn Baughman (USN Ret), and John Robbins.

For a close-up view of the artistic design and creativity of this display you will truly have to visit the museum during our ‘open season’. Other additions and changes have also been made, so please make a point to put a visit to the Selfridge Military Air Museum on your calendar.

MAGHA MEMBERS – We Need YOU!

Please consider volunteering as a weekend docent in the Gift Shop, Flight Training area, SPAD Hangar, or as an Inside/Outside floater. Your volunteering will continue to promote the history of the Air National Guard @ Selfridge and ONLY YOU have unique stories to tell of YOUR time serving. We’re also looking ‘for a few good men & women’ to serve as volunteers on the Tuesday & Friday gigs, but our weekend docents really need a “boost” in numbers!!!!!!!! If volunteering as a weekend docent, standard procedure is about 10 days per season, but if you can only give the museum two to four, don’t let that stop you from applying. We may have funds to keep the Museum operational, but without docents, we don’t have a Museum! Maybe even get your spouse interested in volunteering with you as a “team”. You can obtain the Volunteer Application Form from the Museum’s website http://www.selfridgeairmuseum.org, or call the Museum Director and he’ll send you the application (586-239-6768; or email: [email protected]. If interested in joining our Tuesday/Friday group of volunteers, here are the areas where we desperately need help. Look for the areas with an asterisk *.

Please sign up today!

This is open to all those who served at Selfridge and all branches of service are welcome.

Michigan Activity Pass:

In the near future, well before our ‘open season’ ends in October, the Selfridge Military Air Museum will have joined the Michigan Activity Pass. These passes will be available at your local public libraries for a 7-day check-out period. The pass will be: Buy one Adult, Get One Child (ages 4-12) Free. Check the Michigan Activity Pass website for locating the Museum’s available pass in the near future. https://tln.lib.mi.us/map/ Paperwork still has to be completed on our end and submitted to finalize our inclusion in this project – stay tuned.

MANG BANG 30 JUNE/JULY 2019 MEMORIAL WALL

SELFRIDGE MILITARY AIR MUSEUM

The Michigan Air Guard Historical Association (MAGHA) has completed construction of a Memorial Area in the center of the Air Park at the Selfridge Military Air Museum. The memorial is a place to honor all members of the military who gave their lives in the line of duty and in the service of this great nation, to recognize all those who have in the past or who are currently serving their country, and to acknowledge the contributions made by families and companies to the preservation of freedom. Pictures of the Memorial Area and the Memorial Wall are above. The centerpiece is an elevated F-86 Sabre aircraft, an aircraft flown, maintained, and supported by three Michigan Air Guard units in the mid-1950s. Flanking the F-86 is the Memorial Wall topped by engraved Memorial Bricks such as those shown below.

We invite you to become part of this memorial and to recognize a unit, an individual, or a family by purchasing an engraved b rick that will become a permanent part of the Memorial Wall. Cash donations for the Memorial project are also welcome. All memorial brick purchases and donations for this effort are tax-deductible per Section 170 of the Internal Revenue Service Code. Engraved memorial bricks cost $100.00 per brick for non- members (cost includes a one-year membership in MAGHA), $75.00 per brick for members, and $50.00 per brick when multiple brick orders are made. For example, a one-brick order from a MAGHA member would cost $75.00, a two-brick order would cost $125.00, and a three-brick order $175.00.
