Curragh to Honor Murtagh... The Curragh will honor Johnny Murtagh, who recently retired from race riding to focus on training, on day one of their new racing season Mar. 23. Murtagh never sat on a horse until his mid-teens and started out as a boxer, until a man watching told his mother he had the makings of a rider. Crowned Champion Apprentice in both 1989 and 1991, he became the stable jockey for trainer John Oxx. He went on to claim the Champion Jockey title in 1995, 1996 and 1998. Murtagh won several classics at the Curragh, including the Irish Classic and Irish Oaks. After leaving Oxx to freelance in 2003, he became the retained rider for Coolmore in 2008 and went on to win Group/Grade 1 races that year. In 2010, he left Ballydoyle and became the retained rider for the Aga Khan until 2012 when he became a freelancer again. In his final season last year, Murtagh rode five Group 1 winners and won the leading rider title at Royal Ascot. The 43-year-old has already found success in his training career, having won the G2 Blandford S. at the Curragh.
