CATHERINE D. DEANGELIS, Doctor of Science Sponsor: Steven Block, M.B., B.Ch., Senior Associate Dean, School of Medicine
Dr. Catherine DeAngelis has changed the face of medicine in her role as the fi rst female editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Medical Association. Under her leadership, the journal has published articles on women’s health issues that have brought important new research to light and led to fundamental changes in treatment, including the landmark 2002 study questioning the benefi ts of hormone replacement therapy. Dr. DeAngelis is professor of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Born and raised in a coal-mining town in northeastern Pennsylvania, she attended nursing school at Wilkes University, received her medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, her master’s in public health from the Harvard Graduate School of Public Health, and her pediatric specialty training at Johns Hopkins. She has authored or edited multiple books on pediatrics and medical education, published more than 200 articles, chapters, editorials, and abstracts, and served on numerous journal editorial boards. She joined Johns Hopkins University in 1978, and was appointed vice dean for academic affairs and faculty in 1994. When she was made a full professor in 1984, she was only the twelfth woman in Johns Hopkins’ 94-year history to receive that rank. She continues to break new medical ground and challenge convention. In a recent address at the American Medical Student Association she addressed the infl uence of pharmaceutical representatives on physicians, the ethical responsibilities of physicians towards their patients, and her own experiences with drug companies as editor-in-chief of JAMA. For her leadership, courage, and dedication to the health of men, women, and children, Dr. Catherine DeAngelis is recommended for the degree of Doctor of Science.
E. J. DIONNE, JR., Doctor of Humane Letters Sponsor: Allan Louden, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Communication
E.J. Dionne is a syndicated columnist for The Washington Post, Senior Fellow in Governance at the Brookings Institution, University Professor at the Georgetown Public Policy Institute, and a commentator for National Public Radio. Mr. Dionne grew up in Fall River, Massachusetts. He graduated summa cum laude from Harvard University in 1973 and received a doctorate in philosophy from Balliol College, Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He is the author of many books, including Why Americans Hate Politics; They Only Look Dead: Why Progressives Will Dominate the Next Political Era; Community Works: The Revival of Civil Society in America; and Souled Out: Reclaiming Faith and Politics After the Religious Right. A leading analyst of American politics and political philosophies, he spent fourteen years reporting for The New York Times before beginning his op-ed column for the Post in 1993. His articles have appeared in many publications including Commonweal, The Atlantic, The New Republic, The American Prospect, Sojourners, Dissent, The Washington Post Magazine, and The New York Times Magazine. He is one of America’s most important journalistic thinkers. His insightful analysis informs and shapes American political discourse. He has been named among the twenty-fi ve most infl uential Washington journalists by the National Journal and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The American Political Science Association bestowed him with the Carey McWilliams Award honoring his outstanding journalistic contribution to the understanding of politics. For his commitment to deliberative democracy and the public good, for his insistence on substantive debate and reasoned thought in American politics and culture, E.J. Dionne is recommended for the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.

VASHTI MURPHY MCKENZIE, Doctor of Divinity Sponsor: Bill Leonard, M.Div., Ph.D., Dean of the School of Divinity
Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie is the fi rst female bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. She currently serves as the presiding prelate of the 13th Episcopal District, which encompasses Tennessee and Kentucky. She is one of the best-known preachers in contemporary American Protestantism. Bishop McKenzie received a bachelor of arts degree in journalism from the University of Maryland, College Park, a master of divinity from Howard University, and a doctor of divinity from United Theological Seminary in Ohio. She fi rst received ordination to the ministry in 1984. While pastor at the historic Payne Memorial AME Church in Baltimore, she sought the offi ce of Bishop in the AME Church, and was elected and consecrated the 117th bishop of the church at the General Conference in 2000. She led her congregation to petition and secure a $1.5 million right-to-work contract with the state of Maryland that helped more than 600 men and women secure education, training, and jobs. She is the author of four books, including her latest, Swapping Housewives. She was the chief pastor from 2000 to 2004 of the 18th Episcopal District in southeast Africa, which includes Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana, and Mozambique, where she built new churches, mission houses, and a computer center, and provided scholarships and services for orphaned children. In 2005 she again made history by becoming the fi rst female president of the Council of Bishops of the AME Church and the Titular head of the Church. For her leadership of her church and her commitment to social justice, Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie is recommended for the degree of Doctor of Divinity.
RICHARD NOLL, Doctor of Laws Sponsor: Michelle Roehm, M.S., Associate Professor of Marketing, Babcock Graduate School of Management
Richard Noll is chief executive offi cer of Hanesbrands, Inc. Hanesbrands, Inc. stock is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and its products can be found in eight out of ten American households. Mr. Noll earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Pennsylvania State University and a master of business administration degree with distinction from Carnegie-Mellon University. He joined Sara Lee in 1992 as chief executive offi cer of the U.S. sock business and added international responsibilities in 1998. After holding top positions in the company’s apparel and bakery group divisions, he was named president and chief operating offi cer of Sara Lee Branded Apparel in 2005. Hanesbrands Inc. was spun off from Sara Lee Corporation in 2006. Mr. Noll oversees 50,000 employees in more than twenty-fi ve countries. The Hanes Companies have been important contributors to the local community since 1901 when John Wesley Hanes established his sock manufactory in Winston-Salem. Under Mr. Noll’s leadership, Hanesbrands recently announced a pledge of $2 million to The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County for a performing arts theatre adjacent to the historic Sawtooth Building in downtown Winston-Salem, the site of a Hanes Hosiery mill in the early twentieth century. This gift, a part of The Arts Council’s $26 million capital fundraising campaign, will be used to transform the Sawtooth Building into a Downtown Center for the Arts and help make Winston-Salem and Forsyth County national leaders in culture and the arts. For building a leading global consumer goods company while remaining invested in the welfare of the local community, Richard Noll is recommended for the degree of Doctor of Laws.

JAMES TALENT, Doctor of Laws Sponsor: Mark Hall, J.D., Fred D. and Elizabeth L. Turnage Professor of Law
James Talent is an American politician and a former Senator from Missouri. He recently served as a senior advisor to Mitt Romney’s 2008 Presidential Campaign. A Republican, he served for eight years in the U.S. House of Representatives before being elected to the Senate in 2002. Mr. Talent grew up outside St. Louis, a second-generation descendant of Russian-Jewish and German immigrants. He earned his A.B. in political science from Washington University in St. Louis, and received his J.D. from the University of Chicago in 1981. He served as a law clerk to Judge Richard A. Posner of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. As a freshman in the U.S. Congress, he authored and introduced the Welfare Reform Act of 1994, which was the precursor to the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act. He served as chairman of the Small Business Committee from 1997 to 2001. In the Senate, he served on the Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee; the Armed Forces Committee; the Energy and Natural Resources Committee; and the Aging Committee. He introduced the Small Business Health Fairness Act and the Sickle Cell Treatment Act; co-sponsored the Flag Desecration Amendment; supported the Renewable Fuels Standard; backed the Medicare prescription drug benefi t for senior citizens; supported tort reform legislature; worked with Senator Dianne Feinstein to pass the Combat Methamphetamine Act, and was chief sponsor of anti-predatory lending legislation. He is the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, and currently serves as a Distinguished Fellow at the Heritage Foundation, where he specializes in military readiness issues. For his strong character and his years of dedicated service to his state and nation, James Talent is recommended for the degree of Doctor of Laws.
ROBERT WUTHNOW, Doctor of Humane Letters Sponsor: Simeon Ilesanmi, Ph.D., J.D., Professor of Religion
Robert Wuthnow is one of the leading sociologists of religion in the United States. The Adlinger Professor of Sociology, chair of Princeton’s Sociology Department and director of the Center for the Study of Religion at Princeton, this prodigious scholar and prolifi c author has written more than twenty-fi ve books and dozens of articles, all of which have contributed substantially to our knowledge of the role of religious institutions and religious participation in civic life. Professor Wuthnow holds a B.S. degree from the University of Kansas and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. His many infl uential books have been nominees for the Pulitzer and National Book awards, and include America and the Challenges of Religious Diversity; Saving America? Faith-Based Services and the Future of Civil Society; and After the Baby Boomers: How Twenty- and Thirty-Somethings Are Shaping the Future of American Religion. He is the editor of a new edition of the two-volume The Encyclopedia of Politics and Religion, a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a winner of the Martin E. Marty Award for Public Understanding of Religion, given by the American Academy of Religion. He has been principal investigator for numerous research projects funded by leading foundations including the Russell Sage, Ford, Mellon, Templeton, Henry Luce, Kellogg, Carpenter, and Lilly foundations, and the Pew Charitable Trust. He is currently directing a study of the global reach of Christian organizations in the United States funded by the Lilly Endowment. For being one of the most informed and insightful commentators on religion in America today, Robert Wuthnow is recommended for the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.

THE WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY MACE The Wake Forest University mace, a handsome staff decorated with scenes and symbols of the University, was fi rst used at the inauguration of President James Ralph Scales in April, 1968. It is a traditional symbol of authority and is carried at the head of the academic processions at Commencement and convocations. The mace is shaped from a single sheet of silver covered with gold. It has an ebony handle. Etchings of Wait Chapel, Reynolda Hall, an arch at an entrance to the campus, and the cupola on the Z. Smith Reynolds Library are on the largest, or middle, section. Pictures of the Old Campus are on the top section. On the bottom are panoramas of the medical school, Carswell Hall, and the skyline of Winston- Salem. Each section is separated by raised drawings of magnolias. A double-cast seal of the University is at the top of the mace. The mace was given by Tom Davis of Winston-Salem in honor of his father, Egbert Lawrence Davis (LLB 1904).
THE PRESIDENTIAL CHAIN OF OFFICE The Presidential Chain of Offi ce is part of the academic regalia worn by the President at Commencement and convocations. It is a goldplated necklace of medallions linked by onyx-centered magnolia blossoms. On each medallion is the name of a former Wake Forest president and the years of his tenure. The Chain of Offi ce was a gift to the University in 1991 from Weston P. Hatfi eld (’41), a life trustee and former chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Academic regalia apparently originated at Oxford and Cambridge more than 600 years ago. The apparel is little changed in design, colors, and symbolism. In no other sector are the ancient usages of the university so unchanging. In 1895 an intercollegiate commission drafted a uniform code for the use of academic caps, gowns, and hoods in the United States. Over the years there have been only minor revisions to the code, which is followed by 95 percent of the colleges and universities in America, including Wake Forest. Gowns, which according to the tradition, are all black (Harvard, Princeton, and Yale are exceptions), are of three kinds. The bachelor’s gown is a comparatively simple kind that falls in straight lines from an elaborate yoke. The master’s gown is similar to the bachelor’s except for its peculiar arrangement of the long sleeves with square ends that hang below the elbow. The doctor’s gown is an elaborate, full-cut, fl owing costume distinguished by velvet panels down the front and around the neck and by three bars of velvet on the bell-shaped sleeves. The academic hood was literally a garment to protect the wearer from foul weather. It is the identifying symbol of the degree. The length indicates which degree it represents: three feet for the bachelor’s, three and a half for the master’s, and four for the doctoral. The lining indicates the college or university which awarded the degree. Those who receive degrees from Wake Forest wear hoods lined in old gold and black. The color of the trimming identifi es the major fi eld of learning: white for arts and letters, copper for journalism, purple for law, green for medicine, drab for business, pink for music, silver-gray for speech, dark blue for philosophy, light blue for education, sage green for physical education, golden yellow for science, cream for social science, and scarlet for theology. The Wake Forest University trustees wear black robes with old gold and black on the front panels and the bars on the sleeves. The shield from the University seal is embroidered on the front panels. Some universities have duplicated colors, but generally a glance at the lining, which is worn exposed, will identify the awarding institution. Some of the university colors worn today are:
