What’s in a name? Ku‘ikahi means a treaty, covenant, agreement, feeling of unity, peace, reconciliation. (excerpted from the Hawaiian Dictionary by Mary Kawena Pukui & Samuel H. Neutral sessions held third parties (the mediators) aid participants to systematically work through the issues to reach mutually satisfying solutions.

Ku‘ikahi conducted peer mediation activities at 3 elementary schools in 2017-2018: Keonepoko, Mountain View, and Volcano School of Arts & Sciences

188 youth received 10 student basic mediation trainings supported by 33 faculty/staff and school volunteers.

Things I have learned as a Peer Mediator…

• I learned a new way to handle conflict. I learned that if I have a problem, I can ask for mediation. • I can help people. I can talk to people. I can work with a partner better. • That you can’t always solve a problem but it’s not hard to try and people will help if you have a problem. • It is fun. It helps a lot. It changes things. • I have learned that we can help other people when they’re fighting over something. • To not take sides no matter what. To help people with a problem. To care, not to be mean but be nice. • I learned what Peer Mediator is. I learned what GABCD is. I learned that peer mediating can be fun. • Listen. Understand. Rules. • Don’t tell people what you talk about because it is private information. • Being nice, how to be a peer mediator and how to solve conflicts. • Peace is easier. Being the good guy isn’t so bad. It is fun being a peer mediator.

Ways I have improved my communication and behavior…

• I raise my hand more often when I need help. I am calmer and not as scrunched up. • I can speak with people privately. Kinder. • I have learned to be very respectful. I have learned that to solve a problem you need to be kind and neutral. • I’m able to talk to people if I have a problem. I’m better at communicating. • Being nice and not bothering anyone. • I improved my behavior by being more focused. I improved my communication by not being shy. • Don’t get angry take breaths. • I am more patient. • To talk in front of people. I don’t talk back to my parents as much. • I am nicer. I talk better.
