End of Year Reflection from the CEO As we approach the end of another academic year we reflect on our achievements across the trust, thank those who are leaving for their contribution to our success and look forward to the arrival of new staff members.

The summer holidays are always a busy time and this year will be no exception. Building work has begun on our new, three classroom extension at Park s Academy. At our Early Years classes will come back to a £150,000 makeover of their outdoor learning areas. Improvements are

being made to the hall and dining facilities at Gosberton Academy and all of our schools will benefit from a £250,000 investment in updated computers w

and resources across the trust. At a time when schools are facing increasing financial difficulties, our ability to continue to invest in the environment and e resources for our pupils and students is a direct result of the benefits of being

in a multi academy trust. This means we can continue working in partnership to

raise achievement for all. N

Have a wonderful summer break. r Adrian Reed

“Working in partnership to raise achievement for all”. Having A Blast During Science Week June saw the launch of Science Week at Pioneers. To help the week go with a ‘BANG!’ we had a visit from the Mad Science Team who put on a spectacular science display for us and then ran workshops for each of the classes. The workshops ranged from experiments with dry ice through to building catapults! As can be seen from the photo it was a simply sensational day and the event was kindly sponsored by the Friends of Pioneers School.

Fabulous Flag Fen Year 3 recently travelled back in time to Flag Fen near Peterborough, an ancient Bronze Age site. They were immersed in Bronze Age life. They had an amazing experience finding out about different Bronze Age artefacts, looking at real specimens from an ancient causeway and sitting in a replica boat. The highlight of the day was storytelling around the campfire inside an amazing roundhouse. Imagine their faces as they held a Bronze Age sword and made a magic wish.

Enchanted Woodlanders! On a beautiful sunny day, Year 1 enjoyed a fantastic Woodland Party in our outdoor nature area. This was the last exciting event in a truly magical topic.

As part of their learning the children had enjoyed a trip to Jenny’s Wood to learn all about the local flora and fauna. Stretching their creative talents, they had constructed highly successful nature sculptures inspired by Andy Goldsworthy and worked with clay to show their careful observations of the natural world. The children also grew ‘green fingers’, making miniature gardens that woodland creatures would enjoy and grew beans in Science to observe growth in the light and in the dark. The children certainly couldn’t have wished for a more enchanted learning journey! Chaotic Catapults We have been building chaotic catapults in Year 2 this term. We took on this fun mini topic to help us to enhance our scientific enquiry skills when investigating different models of catapults and the length of their throw. We also enhanced our mathematical measurement skills when recording our findings as well as developing our scientific language when writing up our findings. We finished off by making many towers out of the 3D shapes that we created and looked at the effect of using different materials as our cannon ball. It was so much fun!

If You Go Down To The Woods Today EYFS spent a wonderful, sunny day at Belton House. They headed for the adventure playground where the children spent many happy hours exploring. They loved climbing up the wooden house, whizzing down the slides with their friends and swinging on the zip line. The see-saw and water fountains were a particular favourite! Luckily the sun shone and they soon dried out! Pupils enjoyed a picnic on the grass, chatting merrily with their friends. When it came to leaving, no one wanted to! Lots of them fell asleep on their way back to school. What a super day!

2 • The Boston Witham Academies Federation - Summer News Carlton Road ACADEMY Boston Council Clean Up

In March, the pupils’ parliament helped members of the Boston Borough Council, when they came into our school to help us clean up our school playground and field. We all talked about the rubbish that we may find and the dangers that we may come across. Then we were given bright yellow jackets, gloves and litter pickers to go on a rubbish hunt around the school. We worked as a team and collected more than three WHOLE bags of rubbish from around our school field and we quickly began to understand how important it is not to throw litter on the floor.

We all had a very good day and we learnt a lot!

Online Safety Workshops The Year 5 and 6 classes all took park in workshops by PC Tim Newell about Online Safety. All the children listened carefully and asked a range of questions during the workshop.

To start the talk, the children identified all the appliances and applications that they currently have and use when on the internet. The children then considered what information they would tell a stranger on the street, such as, would they give a complete stranger their full name and date of birth? The children then realised that if they did not know someone online, then this is what they would be doing!

The children then watched a film called Jigsaw about a girl called Becky produced by The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP), giving advice about how to be safe online (www.thinkyouknow.co.uk).

The workshop finished with a discussion about cyber bullying and what the children should do if they are concerned about anything online.

All the children certainly enjoyed the workshop and learnt more about online safety.

Sports Day 2017 We held our sports day at Tollfield campus. The event was organised in conjunction with the BWAF Connect sports team and all the children were able to show off their sporting skills while having a lot of fun. Although the weather was overcast and windy we were able to continue with the event and used the sports hall instead.

The children raced for their teams in order to score points. Plenty of events took place including sprinting, skipping, dressing up and even a space hopper race! All children were brilliantly behaved and we would like to thank the BWAF sports team and their Haven High student helpers for helping to organise the afternoon. We would also like to thank the many parents that came along to support their children too. A brilliant afternoon was had by all. Tattershall Castle As part of our topic ‘Urban Pioneers’ the Dolphin Class went on a trip to Tattershall Castle. We had a tour around the medieval castle and explored it from the bottom to the top and all around the grounds too. We learnt what life was like in Lord Cromwell’s time, we made our very own royal crowns, and even experienced medieval dancing, dressed in historical costumes. The Dolphin Class were impeccably behaved and represented Fishtoft proudly. We will now link this back to our topic work at school as it has helped develop our knowledge of castles ready for our writing.

We would like to say a BIG thank you to a generous person who donated some money to the school. We Playground decided that we would spend some of the money on new playground games and books for our Library that we are now fully enjoying! We now have lots of things to keep us busy at playtime and our big smiles show just how Games appreciative we are.

4 • The Boston Witham Academies Federation - Summer News Sports Day 2017

Gosberton Academy’s annual sports day kicked off on Friday 23rd June with the help of some Year 8s from Haven High. All children took part in races such as sprinting, skipping and obstacle. The children particularly enjoyed the ‘Fancy Dress’ race. They all had a great time and thankfully the weather stayed dry.

Twin Lakes Earlier this term, USA class went to visit Twin Lakes Theme Park. The topic this term was all about Rollercoasters and Theme Parks. The purpose of the visit was for the children to see and experience what makes a Theme Park work and soak up the atmosphere. They also had lots of fun! They went on a rollercoaster, log flume, train and many other attractions and rides. Sea Life Iceland Class visited Hunstanton Sea Life sanctuary as part of their topic work on the Blue Abyss. Lots of children were very brave and touched a starfish and held a crab. We listened to a talk about the seals and watched them being fed. Just before leaving, we walked through the underwater tunnel and spotted Ernie the giant sea turtle. Everyone had a great day.

Spain Class Trip to Cadbury World Spain Class went on a trip to Cadbury World. When we arrived, we were able to wander through the Aztec jungle, a Spanish Galleon and a Victorian Street in a search for the origins of the chocolate bar. We also visited the packaging department and saw a demonstration of chocolate making. Each child got to make up their own flavour of chocolate and taste it. During the day, we encountered several interactive exhibitions and experiences that were enjoyed by both children and adults alike. Finally, we had an informative but fun talk from the resident educationalists about the Maya Civilisation. We found out how the Maya people lived, what they wore and why chocolate was so important to them. Places of Worship Some children from Mexico class took up the opportunity to visit different places of worship in July.

We had a great time visiting the Faizan E Madina Mosque in Peterborough. It was a truly beautiful building and we learnt all about Islam as a religion and looked at pictures of the Kaaba in Mecca, where Muslims are expected to take pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime. This was followed by a delicious lunch at Jimmy Spices where we sampled different foods from around the world, our favourite part was the ice cream! In the afternoon we visited Peterborough Cathedral and looked at some of the important features in Christianity. We were intrigued to see some of the tapestries and the tombs. We had a fantastic day and look forward to continuing to learn about different religions in school.

The Boston Witham Academies Federation - Summer News • 5 Mayor of Boston Visits Haven High for Logo Competition

The Mayor of Boston asked local schools including the Academy to design a logo that would be used by the Boston Town Area Committee (BTAC) for new purchases of equipment for urban spaces developed by the committee.

Georgia Elms (15), Receives Children of Courage Award

Year 11 student Georgia Elms, (15), has received a Children of Courage Award from The Rotary Club of Boston.

Georgia was nominated by the Academy and was successful in winning an award showing her courage and resilience since the untimely death of her mother back in June 2014. Despite this, and the fact she has also had to deal with diabetes, Georgia has never wallowed in self-pity but is instead a positive role model not only to her younger brother but also to fellow students at Haven High. She is an avid fundraiser for MacMillan Cancer Support and holds a coffee morning in memory of her mother every year. Georgia attended the awards ceremony, held at Boston West Golf Centre, along with her father, her brother Max and the academy’s Pastoral Team Leader Ronda Ironmonger. Georgia is pictured receiving her award from Boston Mayor Coun Stephen Woodliffe.

Well done Georgia!

PGL Netball Tour Haven High Academy Sports Faculty organised and conducted another successful PGL Netball Tour to Liddington, Swindon. The tournament itself was organised and officiated by Netball, with the students gaining the best possible game play and umpiring experiences with many receiving individualised coaching from the England officials. Three teams in total attended the weekend comprising of Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 students. During the students’ spare time they were provided the opportunity of experiencing outdoor adventure activities like climbing, zip wire, Jacobs-ladder and many more. All Haven High teams consistently displayed effort, determination and positive game results over the weekend and benefitted hugely from the experience offered from this Netball Tour. Our Year 9 team worked their way through to the semi-finals and achieved 3rd place overall within their age category. They were presented their medals by England professional Eboni Beckford-Chambers. Parents in Science In March, the Science Faculty launched their new event - Parents in Science - whereby students and their parents come in to Marian Campus and carry out an evening of practical and investigation. The KS3 evening was well attended and all students (and parents) had a fantastic evening. Below are just a hand full of photos showing the exciting evening. We had some expert help from our Sixth Form Applied Science students, and the Year 7 and 8 APCs, Mrs Philips and Miss Matson.

Goodbye and Good Luck to Year 13 As we approach the final term of the academic year, it is time to say a fond farewell to our Year 13 students. They are all moving on to new challenges whether that be in education or into the world of work. It has been an absolute pleasure and privilege to work with them all and I, and everyone in the Academy wishes them well and looks forward to hearing of their many successes in the future.

What Next? Having completed their AS examinations, students in Year 12 are now starting to focus on their future plans for their Post 18 destinations. Fifty students have already been to the University UCAS convention at Lincoln University. All the main universities and colleges offering higher education courses are represented at this exhibition and students are able to talk face to face with careers advisors and student representatives from well over a hundred different institutions. In addition to this, tutor time and specially organised events across next term will support students with other aspects of life Post 18. This will include workshops on personal statement writing and choosing courses to creating an effective CV and writing letters of application. We are planning to ask in past students to share their experiences of student life and for the Apprentice Champion for our area to visit students to raise their awareness of the opportunities open to them.

Sister Act This December’s Musical Production will be Sister Act.

The West End and Broadway hit goes out on a professional tour in 2018 but Haven High has managed to secure rights to the show prior to this and will run the show from December 12th to 16th.

Parents in Science Preparations are already well underway with auditions and casting for the lead roles taking place during the final weeks of Term 6 in order to ensure that rehearsals can hit the ground running in September.

The hit show, based on the classic film starring Whoopi Goldberg, follows the story of a Vegas showgirl who is given witness protection in a convent where she turns fellow nuns into an award winning choir.

The Boston Witham Academies Federation - Summer News • 7 Reception News Reception visited Ark Wildlife Park in Stickney as part of their topic, “How many stripes does a Zebra have?” The children learnt about the rescue animals that the park has. The children fed goats, stroked a snake, looked at the Meerkats and met a Lynx, plus many other exciting inhabitants of the park. A fun day was had by all.

Year 2 News Year 2 had a super time at Skegness Aquarium this term, learning about sea creatures, plants and animals. All part of our Beach Combers topic. The children particularly enjoyed creating their very own Bioluminescence sea creature and finding out that an Octopus has 3 hearts and a Sea Jelly has 4 stomachs. The staff were friendly and guided us around the aquarium showing us the vast range of species they have. During our visit, the divers went in to the big tank and fed the sharks, teaching us all about the needs of the fish and the training divers need to go through.

Year 5 News Year 5 enjoyed a visit to the Science Laboratories at Haven High recently where they spent the morning observing different experiments and having a go themselves.

Year 6 - PGL Residential Trip

Some of these included: bracelet making, sculpting a small clay sarcophagus, playing Egyptian board games and many more. In the afternoon, the children involved in acting and role play which was then showcased at the end of the day. Overall, the children had a fantastic, fun filled day. Maths Family Fun Night Staniland Academy recently hosted a Family Maths event. Teams of families took part in a range of fun maths activities supported by staff from the school. We were also lucky to have Steve, a STEM ambassador to help with one of the tasks. A great evening was had by all - though some children (and adults) did get a little wet. A huge thank you to everyone who took part.

Year 4 Tennis and Years 5 and 6 Rounders Four children from Year 4 were selected to represent Staniland at the Indoor Tennis Competition. Charlie, Max, Alicia and Simona attended and played a range of singles games to get points as a team. Charlie managed to get through to the final against a child from St Thomas’ but was unfortunately pipped at the post. Overall, the team came second and we were incredibly proud of them.

At the Rounders Tournament, Staniland played really well as a team, beating all of the other teams in the tournament to get through to the final. However, they weren’t successful in the final to Boston West and came second overall. A special mention to Kieran Fish for his accurate bowling and Luke Yarnall for being a super back stop! A huge well done to everyone.

Haven High Taster Day Earlier this term the Year 5 children attended Haven High Academy for a Science Taster morning. The children thoroughly enjoyed taking part in lots of different science experiments. Some of the experiments we enjoyed were the squeaky pop test, creating a fire extinguisher in a test tube and burning different chemicals to create different coloured flames. The children created their own wormery for the classroom to observe what happens to the layers of sand and soil, as well as planning and collecting materials to build a bug hotel for the outdoor environment. They even received a special delivery of caterpillars. The children have thoroughly enjoyed experiencing the life cycle stages to see them develop into beautiful butterflies.

‘Bright Lights, Big City’ In Year 1, our topic this term is ‘Bright Lights, Big City’ and we have been finding out about London, the Royal Family and The Great Fire of London.

At the start of our topic, we were very excited to receive a letter from the Queen, she invited us to have a party for her birthday. So of course, we had a Royal Tea Party, we dressed in our best clothes, waved flags, sang the National Anthem and enjoyed baking cakes for the celebration and even the Queen made a royal visit! We then wrote to the Queen to ask her some questions and tell her all about the party and posted them to Buckingham Palace (we are waiting for our reply).

Year 2 Cross Curriculum Fun This term, we have been looking at the story of the tragic events surrounding The Titanic. In History, we have been delving into the events of that fateful night, and the days beforehand. During PSHE and RE, we have been considering the social, moral and spiritual implications of the class system on the ship, especially in light of the tragedy of the number of passengers saved on the lifeboats.

Was it fair to have women and children saved first? Why were there a higher number of First Class passengers saved? English lessons have seen us write persuasive texts encouraging passengers to board The Titanic, whilst in Maths-links in non-core subjects, we will be using our formidable mathematical skills to work out different measurements relating to Titanic - its mass and length, as well as the fraction of passengers saved compared with those who perished. However, the fun really started when in Science we posed the question, “how could something as large as Titanic float?” and “how could an unsinkable ship, sink?” We were very lucky to have a special guest join us. Captain Early stood in for Captain Smith, captain of the Titanic. Captain Early came to our joint classes lesson and showed us the science behind floating and sinking using different objects.

We made predictions and were amazed to discover which objects would float - and which sank. Holding a ball of clay aloft in the air, Captain Early then challenged us to make it float! Through working scientifically, we had already discovered that a ball of clay does not float; and so, collectively we thought about the shape of boats. Carefully, we moulded our clay balls into boats. Our teachers, Mrs Devine and Mr Cartwright, joined in too and had a floating and sinking competition. We watched in awe as their clay boats floated on the water, and counted the seconds to see which boat would sink first. Mr Cartwright’s clay boat proved to be just like Titanic and took on water quickly, making it unbalanced and changing the displacement - the occupation by a submerged body or part of a body of a volume which would otherwise be occupied by a fluid - of the boat on the water. Slowly, his boat sank to the depths of the water tray. Mrs Devine was the champion! What a fun, and educational, afternoon we had.

Holidays are referred to the Local Authority who consider issuing parents/carers with Fixed Penalty Notices. If you wish to discuss this further, please will you make an appointment to speak with the Academy Education Welfare Officer.

Attendance We have seen an improvement in overall school attendance, however we do still have some way to go to achieve the Government target of 95%. You are reminded that if your child’s attendance falls below 90%, you will be contacted by a member of the Federation Educational Welfare Team to discuss this. 95% attendance is equal to 9.5 days of missed school. 90% attendance is equal to 19 days of missed school, in an academic year. Poor attendance will have an impact on your child’s academic achievement. Lateness We have seen a significant reduction in the number of children arriving late and as a result there are fewer children missing the start of lessons. However, we do still have some way to go to achieve our goal of 100% of young children arriving on time each morning. We will continue with the ‘late gate’ and you will be approached for an explanation by a member of the Federation Educational Welfare Team if your child is late. Anyone arriving after registration is classed as late.
