Good To Grow: Cassina Garden Club grows for the sake of history By Jay Jones [email protected]

The Cassina Garden Club on St. Simons Island tends more than gardens. They are also stewards of history in their resto- ration and upkeep of two 200-year-old tabby cabins. Club member Janis Rodriguez says the structures represent a wide swath of local history and are much like a garden of stories. The cabins housed slaves, wood mill workers, a school and a doctor’s office by the time the garden club started using Georgie’s Drive them as a meeting place in the 1930s. “The two cabins we have were transitioned. JUNCTION CITY – A dirt road whispers of mysteries no lover of history can resist. Come wander awhile, that road says. Drive slowly over the hills and around the curves, the bet- ter to spy the treasures that hide amongst the brush and the trees. Maybe you’ll find a weathered old barn tilting on the verge of collapse, a vine-covered farmhouse with broken windows and a sag- ging front porch, or perhaps a cluster of rusty machines left to ruin where they last came to rest.
