MISSISSIPPI STATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 2007-08 GAME NOTES

THE LAST MEETING

LEXINGTON, Ky. - In front of an announced crowd of 6,012, Mississippi State’s women’s basketball team (12-8, 3-3 ) overcame an 11-point second-half defi cit to force overtime and then outscored Kentucky 8-0 in a second overtime period to claim an 83-75 road win over UK (14-7, 3-3 SEC) Thursday night at Rupp Arena.

State had fi ve players in double fi gures in the contest, led by junior Imesia Jackson’s 22. Robin Porter and Bethany Washington added 18 and 16, respectively to the MSU cause. Washington added 10 rebounds for a double-double effort, the second of her collegiate career. Freshman guard Alexis Rack and Marneshia Richard both tallied 10 points in the effort.

UK was led by Jennifer Humphrey with 22 points and 16 rebounds while Carly Ormer- od Samantha Mahoney fi nished with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

The Lady Bulldogs opened up the fi rst half of play scoring the fi rst fi ve points of the game and did not allow Kentucky to score its fi rst basket until the 16:52 mark. With Kentucky having a height advantage, MSU was out-rebounded 20-10 in the half and did not bring down its fi rst until six minutes into the game. Kentucky took a 36-30 lead, but MState scored the last six points of the half to tie the game, 36-36, at the intermission.

Coming out of the break, Kentucky went on a 7-0 run to open the second period and put together another run to go up by as many as 11 points midway through the half. However, the Lady Bulldogs fought back with a 12-3 run to tie the game at 62-62 with 3:41 left in regulation. The teams traded baskets down the stretch, with a left-handed layup by Washington sending the game into overtime.

After the teams played to a dead heat in the fi rst overtime with seven points apiece, MState scored all eight points in the second overtime period to claim the victory. In that period, the Lady Bulldogs got points from four different players, jump-started by early buckets from Jackson and Amy Reeder, and capped off with free throws from Porter and Washington.

The win gives Mississippi State its fi rst double overtime win since defeating Southern University, 80-79, December 14, 1984.

MSU fi nished the game shooting 40 percent from the fi eld. The Lady Bulldogs also hit 75 percent from charity stripe at 15-for-20. Despite height being a factor, MState came back to out-rebound UK 46-45 in the game, including 19 offensive rebounds.
