Feast of St. Francis of Assisi

On October 4, we celebrated the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Thirty-eight years ago, St. Pope John Paul II named St. Francis the patron saint of those who promote ecology. More recently, Pope Francis was so inspired by the actions and spirituality of St. Francis that he took the saint’s name and, in Laudato Si’, cited St. Francis as the “example par excellence of care of the vulnerable and of an integral ecology lived out joyfully and authentically.”

Today, we celebrate the finding of God in all nature’s wonders, and we remember our responsibility to protect, nurture, and cultivate God’s creations.

To celebrate, we offer the following meditation and invite you to consider practicing it. It was created by the Catholic Climate Covenant and is a meditation on befriending the wolf of Gubbio. Go outside if possible. Each year, we observe Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to Find a quiet place to sit or slowly walk. If you must October 15. Holy Trinity School Spanish teachers Señorita Lamblin stay inside, try to find a quiet space where you can sit and Señorita Fleming put together a website for a list of festivals, or walk in silence. Then begin. book suggestions, and local events. Visit www.trinity.org/hhm.

Read silently these two quotes:

“Francis teaches us that God is incarnate in all of creation, and that entering into the cloister of creation helps us to deepen our relationship with our Creator. We have been given powerful gifts to explore this kinship: gifts we sometimes do not associate with our spiritual life or think of as potential tools with which to discover the Incarnation. God has generously bestowed us with amazing sensory abilities--thus we are fine-tuned to

read the Book of Creation.” (Sr. Illia Delio in Care for Creation)

“If God became flesh and entered this world in Jesus, then the hiding place of God is this world, in the material, in the animals, in the elements, in the physical. These are the hiding places—and the revelation places—of God!” (Fr. Richard Rohr) Continued on page 5

We are a Jesuit Catholic parish that welcomes all to: From the Pastor’s Desk

Accompany one another in Christ Celebrate God's love Transform lives Recently, I was invited to lead a discussion for Holy Trinity School’s PARISH CENTER fourth grade class on the meaning of the Trinity. One student, as children are apt to do, raised her hand and asked, “Father Gillespie, Phone: (202) 337-2840 Fax: (202) 337-9048 why does God allow evil?” I thought to myself, Wow, what a smart Hours: Mon-Thur: 8:30am-7:30pm; Fri: question! and I immediately recognized a pedagogical challenge as I 8:30am-12pm through August 25; Sat & Sun: sought to provide a meaningful response to a question that has No receptionist on duty, but the parish center is challenged philosophers and theologians for centuries. accessible during mass times. Pastor Kevin Gillespie, S.J. kgillespie@ (202) 903-2800 trinity.org In response to this question, which we often raise when bad things Associate Pastor Paul Campbell, S.J. pcampbell@ happen, I told the inquisitive fourth graders about God’s presence (202) 903-2832 trinity.org with us, distinguishing the differences between evil caused by nature and evil caused by human beings.
