Tommy Johnson, 36, left school at the age of 16, keen to start earning money. It was a decision that felt right to him at the time but later came back to haunt him, as he moved around from “one dead end job to another”, because he didn’t have many qualifications and no real focus on what he wanted to do. When his wife decided to come to Hartlepool College to gain GCSEs (and has since progressed to Access to Education), her positive experiences inspired Tommy to follow her lead and enrol on the College’s Level 1 Carpentry & Joinery. The course fired up his ambition, and Tommy has now secured an Apprenticeship. Tommy said “It really is never too late to make a difference to your life”.

# BE THE NEXT ...Quantity Surveyor, like Robyn Fraser

Robyn Fraser, from Sedgefield, has ambitions to be a quantity surveyor, a vital and high responsibility profession within the construction industry. After completing her first year on the Level 3 Construction and the Built Environment course as a full-time student, Robyn gained a position as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor with international company Interserve, who were impressed by her progress and suggested she continue with her studies part-time. Robyn found the College more than willing to give her the flexibility she needed to do this, and next year she progresses to HNC level, with a view to going on to a degree at Northumbria University.

In 2011 Lewis joined Hartlepool College as part of the Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching and Exercise programme to complement his job as a School Sport Coordinator in Bishop Auckland. However, not long after starting the course austerity cuts led to the school’s sport structure being reformed, leaving Lewis without a job. Encouraged and guided by College staff he set up his own company, Education Enterprise, which specialises in delivering sport and PE to primary schools and the local community. Lewis commented “It would have been very easy for me to be down and beaten by losing my job, but the enthusiasm and support from the sports team at Hartlepool College filled me with the confidence to go it alone. And I am so glad I did, I couldn’t be happier with the results”.

No, you did read that right - from humble beginnings in Hartlepool, Savannah Marshall has competed around the globe as a boxer, winning World and Commonwealth gold and representing her country as part of TeamGB at London 2012 and Rio 2016. Savannah is proof that there are no limits to what you can do when you have the right skills, discipline, and a hard working attitude. Studying on HCFE’s BTEC National Diploma in Sport and now at Foundation Degree level, Savannah is also an elite mentor to other College sports students. She commented “I believe that if you are dedicated and motivated and have the will to achieve then you will achieve your dreams. I really couldn’t have done it without HCFE, and I’m really happy to give something back, where it all started, helping any way I can.”
