BISHOP’S MESSAGE FOR JULY 2016

I express my gratitude to all of you for prayers, wishes, flowers and gifts on my platinum birthday. Nearly 250 Priests concelebrated with me. Eight Bishops joined the celebration. The people of all faiths felicitated me. All this is done not to me as an individual but a representative of catholic community in this district. The honour, respect and gratitude shown to me is a symbol of gratitude to our Christian community. I pass on this act of yours to Jesus who called me to be His Priest and Shepherd. Many things are said of me, many achievements are attributed to me. Without your support, goodwill and generosity it would not have been possible. I pass on this honour to the last and least of the brothers and sisters in Christ. I am grateful to you all. On 16 July we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. This feast is dear to our coastal Christian communities. The Carmelite Missionaries were the pastors in these districts. Hence they popularised the devotion of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This devotion is spread by the Carmelites wherever they worked in our Diocese. We have 3 branches of the Carmelite order. We wish them a Happy Feast of their Patron – Mother of Carmel. The devotion to the scapular inculcates in us, the Gospel spirit of poverty, penance and prayer. Let us learn more about this scapular and its message and impart it to our people and encourage the faithful to wear it. I am happy to tell you that 5 Brothers are ordained deacons for our Diocese on 16 June. They are: 1. Dn Alwyn R. D’Souza – Shirtady 2. Dn. Antony C. D’Souza – Omzoor 3. Dn Lizel J. D’Souza – Mudipu 4. Dn Anil I. Fernandes – Nainad 5. Dn Anil F. Pinto – Indubettu I congratulate them and wish them fruitful Dioconal ministry. The Deaconal ministry will be from October 2016. 99 01–07–2016 Inter Nos

It was on 21 July 2013 Same (Africa) mission was inaugurated. Ever since Priests and regents – missionaries from have been working in the mission and reaping the fruits of their labour. Our school is very much patronized and is known for quality education. We are contributing to the development of the place by good education which would give them a better future. Quite a number of people have become the disciples of Jesus. We have much to do in Same. We need your prayers and generous assistance. We are thankful to them who have contributed for the mission. The I batch of retreat will start on the 3rd of July. Where there are more priests in a Parish or institution should attend one of the batches. May God bless you. + Aloysius Paul D’Souza Bishop of Mangalore

FATIMA APOSTOLATE To: The Vicars Vara, Parish Priests and Deacons, As you are well aware of the Centenary Celebration of the Fatima apparitions of Our Lady in 1917, we have inaugurated the centenary on 29 May 2016 in the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Fatima Retreat House, . We held a candellit procession in honour of Our Lady from Retreat House to Milagres Church. More than 2000 people participated in the procession. On that day I announced to the faithful that the statue of Our Lady of Fatima would be taken to 12 deaneries of our Diocese. The following time table is fixed for the travel of the statue. The statue will be reached by the previous deanery to the next deanery by the Dean and the people. A format of a prayer service is given to you by Fr Francis D’Souza – Diocesan Director for Fatima apostolate. Please announce to the people so that they could come in various intervals to recite the Rosary, to participate in a Mass and make the consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Our objective of the Fatima Apostolate is to revive the family rosary devotion, to make penance for the conversion of sinners and peace in the world. This is an opportunity for us to strengthen the Rosary apostolate in our faithful and families. The Fatima message and the people’s devotion brought about peace and reconciliation among the nations and people. We know from the history of the church how this devotion to Rosary has kept our faith alive. It is said that our forefathers who were taken captives to Srirangapattana had carried their Rosary and cross, the only articles, they could carry. Adherence to this form of prayer has kept the people in faith. Let us pray to our Mother Mary to bring about peace in our Christian families, parishes, the diocese and in the world at large. Please encourage your faithful to join in the family Rosary of Fatima Apostolate. To start a unit in your parish please seek guidance from Fr Francis D’ Souza, the Director. May Mother Mary, Our Lady of Fatima bless us all. + Aloysius Paul D'Souza Bishop of Mangalore ***** Seminar Exclusively for Priests NBCLC is organizing a Seminar exclusively for Priests from 11-15 July 2016 at NBCLC, Bangalore on Pope Francis’ exhortation Amoris Laetitia. ****** ‘Raknno’ – Diocesan Konknni Weekly Dear Rev. Fathers, Raknno could get 1523 new subscriptions in past 12 months, mostly from our Diocese, Hope we get double the number more in coming 12 months. Raknno is yet to reach 80 per cent of the 40,000 or so of the families of our diocese. A big thanks for your kind help. Few of the Priests also gifted Raknno subscription for catechism children, for the regular attendants of daily mass during holidays, for the needy families, and the like, other than encouraging one or other Parish association to promote Raknno. May their tribe increase! There are also 1121 deactivated subscriptions due to non-renewal, most of them are from neighbouring Dioceses. Kindly note, only those advertisements sent directly to our Ad Desk attract some discount. We have in our stock a few Konknni books of 12 varieties which are given free for Parish and school libraries. You may take them if you please. Thanks. - Fr Valerian Fernandes (9880851674) Editor 115 01–07–2016 Inter Nos

Shanthi Kiran Counseling Centre (SKCC) Bajjodi, Mangalore - 5. Email Id: [email protected]

Greetings to you The course on Psychological First Aid (PFA) was attended by 106 participants (teachers and school heads). During the course, the participants expressed that the course was useful for them while dealing with the students. They also suggested that if such courses are oiganized in schools for the whole staff of each school (including teaching and non-teaching), then whole staff may benefit and may have a positive outlook towards the young ones. During the feedback session, the participants put forth few themes and prepared a guidance program for the schools. Considering the feedback of the teachers, and the suggestions of our school heads, academic professionals and parish pastors, our centre has a come up with a guidance program for the schools during the academic year 2016-17. This year our focus is on children, adolescents and youth. The thrust is on student-teacher relationship, student-parent relationship and loyalty to the institution. We plan to have this guidance program for each school. Few schools already completed the program and a few have registered. We are also ready to help you in your parishes and institutions. If you need our help you may contact us and we are ready to help you on first come first serve basis. You may plan for two days or for a day depending on your convenience. The guidance program for this year includes following themes which could be best covered for two days. You may adjust the themes according to the ethnic, social background of your school, parish or institution. l. Understanding the Child/adolescent and its Behaviour 2. Understanding the mental ill-health conditions experienced by children/adolescents 116 01–07–2016 Inter Nos
