HIGHLIGHTS SITUATION IN NUMBERS

 The number of new cases of Ebola in fell for a fifth week. As of 25 JANUARY 2015* There were 103 new cases reported, among which 25 are confirmed, bringing the total number of cases in Guinea to 2,971 (2,569 confirmed, 332 probable and 16 suspected cases). 2,917Cases of Ebola (2,569 confirmed)  Mali, in the Labé region, reported its first case of Ebola. UNICEF has deployed Rapid Response Team for Social Mobilization and distribution of hygiene kits. 1,910 Deaths (1,578 confirmed)  UNICEF’s Deputy Director of UNICEF for programmes, Geeta Rao Gupta, made a two-day visit to Guinea. She started her trip by visiting a health checkpoint at the border crossing in Pamelap 561 before moving on to a school in Pamelap and the CTCOM in Children and youth 0-20 infected Friguiagbé. She then met with officials in Forecariah , Kindia and (495 confirmed) as well as humanitarian actors, donors and beneficiaries.

 UNICEF Guinea partnered with the Ministry of Youth to set up 200 4,105,926 cinema clubs across the country. UNICEF will broadcast Ebola- Children living in affected areas related messages throughout the African Cup of Nations tournament. 172  UNICEF and partners made cash transfers to the guardians of 1,180 children who lost one or both parents this week, up from Cases among health workers 136 last week, to help families prepare for the return to school. Situation Overview and Humanitarian Needs

Summary Analysis of Programme Response WASH

 UNICEF distributed more than 31,720 household hygiene kits to 222,040 people in Ebola-affected areas. This brings the total number of household kits distributed since the beginning of the outbreak to 81,252 and the number of beneficiaries to 568,764.  To support the government as students returned to schools and universities that had remained shut after the summer to help prevent the spread of Ebola, UNICEF Guinea distributed 25,800 school hygiene kits benefitting 1,467,252 students.

CCCs\CTCs  The Centre de Transit Communautaire (CTCom) in Friguiagbe (Kindia) is operational bringing the number to six community transit centers (Kouremale, Kissidougou, Koropara, Boffossou, Kourroussa).

Communication for Development (C4D)  UNICEF Guinea partnered with the Ministry of Youth to set up 200 cinema clubs throughout the country. Clubs have received kits consisting of a TV, a generator and a channel subscription so people can watch the African Cup of Nations tournament. UNICEF will produce video clips sensitizing fans to Ebola that will be broadcast between games. Miss Guinea 2015 and a number of former soccer stars attended the launch of the cinema clubs initiative and sent their own messages supporting the Ebola response. The event received widespread coverage in local media. In Forécariah, C4D team set up projectors at five sites to broadcast Ebola-related messages during the African Cup of Nations tournament. Coordination: UNICEF and partners including the prefectural Islamic League, the National Network of Traditional Communicators, Enfance du Globe, rural radio and the regional inspectorate of education met in Kankan to discuss a communications strategy.  Working groups: UNICEF met with partners - including rural radio Kankan, two private radio stations (Milo and Baobab FM), the regional inspection of education, prefectural directorate of social action, youth and women associations, religious groups and N'KO ICRA associations – to reenergize and coordinate social mobilization activities.  Staff: As many as 360 young people deployed in the 101 districts of Forécariah to do sensitization and outreach work in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth. In Conakry, 10 C4D coordinators from the Centre Africain de Formation pour le Développement (CENAFOD) deployed to the 18 prefectures and five communes.  Mass media: Forécariah broadcast a radio show on Ebola survivors. Also in Forécariah, young people and 20 journalists from private and government media organizations participated in a programme on resistance to the Ebola response.  CWCs: A total of 453 Community Watch Committees (CWC) were formed in the prefectures of Yomou, Lola, Beyla, Nzerekore, Macenta and Gueckedou. CWCs reached 2,386 people and 63 households via door-to-door visits and educational talks in Kankan. With the support of UNICEF, AACG and PRIDE reached as many as 43,000 households via door-to-door visits and community meetings. In Gueckédou, 158,000 bars of soap and nearly 60,000 bottles of chlorine bottles were distributed during the sensitization sessions and PRIDE Guinea sensitized 12,873 motorcycle taxi drivers (including 2,819 women).  Capacity building: 62 evangelical religious leaders in Macenta received sensitization training. In Kankan, 32 individuals engaged in communication and social mobilization work received training in the use of educational pictorial flipcharts and information on the 10 key messages about Ebola.

Child Protection  UNICEF and its partners this week intensified their efforts to scale up psychosocial support to Ebola-affected children and, as a result, succeeded in reaching 7,808 children – up from 6,635 last week. This brings the total number of children that UNICEF has helped to 29,258 – or 24 per cent of the 120,000 children identified as requiring support. Community volunteers continue to lead this effort and UNICEF trained an additional 320 people this week bringing the total number of volunteers to 1,407. Some of these individuals are Ebola survivors and they have been instrumental in supporting children who have lost one or both parents, families and other vulnerable children. This week volunteers conducted 597 community sessions.  With schools reopening, UNICEF encouraged its partners to increase the number of cash transfers to enable families caring for orphaned children to prepare for sending them to school. This week, the guardians of 1,180 children who have lost one or both parents received financial help, up from 136 last week, bringing the total number to 1,837. This represents 44 per cent of the total number of children who have lost one or both parents who have so far registered for assistance. In addition to cash transfers to their guardians, 663 children who have lost one or both parents received kits containing food, clothes and hygiene supplies.  Groupe Guicorpes, a local company, donated 20,000 books to children who have lost one or both parents through UNICEF to help their return to school.  The community council for the protection of children made home visits to 304 children who have lost one or both parents this week, bringing the total number of these visits to 2,080. No significant child protection issues have been reported as yet.  Community volunteers conducted 23 community dialogue sessions on stigma and the importance of solidarity within affected families. This brings the total number of sessions to 51.  Six prefectural child protection coordination networks developed their Ebola response plans. In addition, 50 village child protection networks were set up and their members received training this week bringing the total number of people trained to 366.

Education  Following the countrywide reopening of schools on 26 January 2015 (schools had remained closed after the summer break to prevent transmission of Ebola between pupils), UNICEF has been monitoring the situation to assess whether hygiene stations and school wash kits are being used properly and whether pupils are having their temperature taken regularly. UNICEF and government figures show that 10,103, or 93 per cent, of Guinea’s 10,170 primary and secondary schools reopened. At primary level, numbers obtained so far confirm that 468,351 of Guinea’s 1.73 million primary school pupils return to classes. While the number of pupils returning to school was lower than expected, this is increasing on a daily basis. UNICEF is visiting schools to urge continued vigilance to prevent any fresh outbreaks of Ebola.

Health  The Kankan Health Prefectural Director (DPS) finalized a distribution plan to strengthen the entire healthcare system in the (Kankan administrative region). To achieve this, the DPS started distributing health kits containing medicines, RUTF (F100, F75), protein biscuits and small medical equipment for Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health, including HIV and Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses. This includes the ongoing work in prefecture covering 15 health centers, one prefectural hospital, 79 health posts and 800 community health workers.

Supply and Logistics  UNICEF handed over 300 motorcycles and 37 4x4s to the National Ebola Coordination through a donation from the World Bank.  UNICEF provided school supplies to 2, 000 children who have lost one or both parents and to four partners providing psychosocial support in 300 communities.

Partnership and Humanitarian Coordination  UNICEF signed two new partnership agreements this week. The first is with Zero Pauvre en Afrique which will conduct Ebola sensitisation in the five regions of Conakry. The second is with Fondation Hirondelle. The partnership will see the establishment of four new rural radio stations and the creation of programmes to be broadcast on those stations. These will include some show in local languages and the creation of educational programmes for children.

Media and External Communications  The Government of Guinea reopened schools countrywide on 19 January 2015. The video footage shot that day – a collaboration between UNICEF and UNMEER in Guinea – of students returning to school had a relatively high pick up, according to UNIFEED. The video material was broadcast throughout the week including prominently on CNN International’s Amanpour. To date, networks have aired footage more than 125 times, with ABC leading the way with 36 broadcasts. FOX, CNN, CBS, NBC have also shown segments of the footage. NPR also covered the story.  Local media covered the visit of UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Geeta Rao Gupta who attended a ceremony to mark the handover of vehicles to the National Ebola Coordination.  The communications team covered various UNICEF activities and events such the launch of 200 cinema clubs around the country. This event garnered significant local media coverage.

Funding In line with the UN inter-agency response strategy for the Ebola Outbreak, UNICEF’s Humanitarian Action for Children (HAC) is appealing for USD 93.5 million USD for Guinea to support the needs of women and children affected by the Ebola crisis until end of June 2015. To date, USD 71.2 million has been received, 76 percent of the current appeal.
