From the Editor

Welcome to the January edition and thank you to Jenna Wheatman and Heidi Coates for their contribution.

The year has started well as regards cross country championships, with an increase number of club members competing, and we also have a Yorkshire County and a Schools Champion. I am looking forward to attending the next two major championships, and have even entered the English National! We have not had as much success in the leagues as in recent years, but in the East Yorkshire League, we have an increased participation, and we managed to achieve first men’s and women’s team at our home fixture at Langdale End.

Good luck to all our cross country runners for the remainder of the season.

Mick Thompson 01723 864442 [email protected]

Fixtures Club members have participated in almost all of the races listed. I can help with further information if required. Ed.

Runners who want to lose weight and are already maxing out their miles burn plenty of calories, so the easiest way for them to create a deficit is to eat smarter. Don't eliminate meals or skip your post-run snacks, though; you could end up under-fuelled, constantly hungry or with a sluggish metabolism–none of which are good for weight loss or for racing at your best. Instead, try these sustainable strategies:

Cut out the junk. "The most important thing you can do to get lean is to improve your overall diet quality," says Matt Fitzgerald, author of Racing Weight. "Focusing on what you're eating instead of how much can get you 90 percent of the way." That means fewer sweets, refined carbs, fried foods, fatty and processed meats, and liquid calories, while adding fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds, whole grains, and lean meats and fish.

Make smart swaps. Instead of pancakes after your morning run, eat a veggie and cheese omelet. Trade your pasta dinner for a brown rice and edamame stir-fry. And instead of a brownie ice cream sundae, celebrate post-race with just one scoop, topped with fruit and crushed nuts. Even if these substitutions are close in calories to your usual, they're higher in protein and fiber that will help keep you feeling fuller for longer.

Shrink your portions. Cutting out just a few bites from each meal and snack can make a difference–up to 500 calories a day or enough to lose a pound a week. The only time you shouldn't cut back? After a particularly long or hard run. "That's when your recovery–and your appetite–should be the priority," nutrition counsellor Alicia Shay says. "For most people, that will only apply to two meals a week." Be vigilant the rest of the time.

Eat on a schedule. Have a meal or snack every few hours–and keep that consistent day after day. "Runners can't always trust their bodies' hunger signals, because intense exercise can suppress appetite at times and make you feel starving at others," Rasa Troup, CSSD, says. An insatiable hunger after long runs may be less about your workout and more about the fact that you aren't eating enough throughout the day.

Incorporate resistance training. "Research shows that if you're an active runner and you lose weight, you're going to lose both fat and muscle," Paul Vanderburgh, exercise physiologist, says. To avoid shedding too much of the latter–which is what gives runners their power–aim for five to 10 minutes a day of body-weight exercises, like pushups, planks, lunges and squats. Fill up with fluids. Most people need three to four liters of water a day, and if they're not getting that, it can throw off a lot of things in the body–including hunger cues. "Your stomach's going to crave food when what it really wants is water," Shay says. To help maintain his weight loss, marathoner Tom Storey employs a trick he read about in an interview with Meb Keflezighi–drinking a pint or two of water before every meal.

Don't race to finish. Runners dealing with extreme hunger tend to inhale their post-workout meals faster than their brains can process satiety signals from the stomach, Emily Brown, RD, says–so it's easy to think you need more calories than you really do. Practice mindful eating when you refuel after a run: Sit down, eliminate distractions and pay attention to the taste, texture and satisfying nature of every bite.

Have fun. If you're in the habit of rewarding yourself with junk food after a hard run, try thinking of the workout as a reward in itself instead. A recent Cornell University study found that runners tended to eat less after a run when they considered it enjoyable, rather than hard work. Take time to evaluate your running: Have you become too focused on outcomes? Reclaim the joy of the activity, and make fitness its own reward.

Heidi Coates at Sledmere

Years as a Runner:

I started running at the age of 11 when I went to Caedmon Secondary School. I, or should I say my PE teacher discovered I had a talent for Cross Country running and put me in the school team. I remember coming first in my first race and been absolutely delighted. I went on to win the rest of the races that season. As I had done so well at Cross Country my PE teacher decided I should run the 1500m at the schools sports day which I managed to win. I continued running in the school cross country team and 1500m my 3 years there. I was privileged to win many more races and represent both my district and county in a number of cross country events.

At 14 my passion for competitive running waned, however I continued to run in my PE lessons. Unlike now, I was allowed to tell my teacher where I was planning to run and then leave the school site to go running on my own. I found this time and space so precious whilst doing my GCSE’s.

Once finishing GCSE’s I really didn’t do any running again till I was in my early 20’s. I joined a gym wanting to get fit and lose some excess weight after having my daughter. As I am sure many of you will have experienced the same but running on a treadmill bored me to tears and I longed to get outside again. So I started heading out along the cliff tops and beach and rekindled my love for running. I entered a few races to give me targets to aim for.

I started coming to Scarborough AC in February 2014 after Linda Hinchliffe told me she attended and really enjoyed the company and motivation running with others provided her. A decision I certainly have not regretted. Favourite Races/Events:

Great Trail Challenge 11K in Keswick was incredibly challenging but had stunning scenery that took your breath away, well that could have been the massive hill I just crawled up!

Great North Run is the longest distance I have run and the biggest race I have entered. I will always remember the first time I did it when the Red Arrows flew across the bridge as I was running across, the number people along the route shouting you on and the overwhelming sense of achievement when I crossing the finish line.

Targets/Ambitions

This year I would like to have a go at least one fell race and complete all of the EY Cross Country series.

Long term I would like to complete a marathon during the year I turn 40.

Press Reports

South Yorkshire Cross Country League. Final fixture at Kimberworth

Scarborough Athletic Club’s leading junior cross country runner Bronwen Owen, who has missed the first two months of the new cross country season due to a running injury, returned to action as a guest runner in the final fixture of the South Yorkshire Cross Country League, which was held at Kimberworth near Rotherham.

In the Senior Women’s race, 17 year old Bronwen finished first overall, and was most notably ahead of Rachel Lundgren, an Under 23 athlete competing for Sheffield University, who at this final league fixture of the South Yorkshire League, subsequently won the league title for the second time. The result augers well for Bronwen’s bid to win a record fifth Yorkshire County Championship title next month, after moving up to the Over 20 division this season.

Loftus Poultry Run

Neil Scruton gets the bird! Four members of Scarborough Athletic Club competed in the annual Loftus Poultry Run, in which runners who are encouraged to run in seasonal fancy dress, compete over a 8 mile multi terrain course which has three challenging climbs in the Loftus area of the race.

The Scarborough quartet were once again led home by 67 year old Neil Scruton who was the first Over 60 and 94th overall of the 454 finishers in an excellent time for the course of 57 minutes 23 seconds. Neil’s achievement was rewarded with the usual poultry prize. (Photo attached).

Neil was followed by two new club members who made a notable event debut. John Bamford, a over-50 runner was 279th in 69.56, and Nick Combes who is also an Over 50, was 309th in 72.21.

The experienced 64 year old Dave Parke finished in 367th and ahead of mostly younger competitors in 76.52.

Pickering Sportshall Event

Seven of Scarborough Athletic Club’s young athletes were very successful at a Sportshall event held at the Pickering Sports Centre. Sportshall is an indoor form of track and field for children between the ages of 4 and 16, which creates a safe and warm environment for young athletes to train during the cold and dark winter months and is the largest competition within the School Games framework and with an estimated user-base of well over 1 million children, Sportshall has more participants than any other School Sport Competition.

The most successful Scarborough competitor was Chloe Calvert –Best who gained the most events from a variety of running, strength and skill based events, to finish as the top Under 15 Girls Scorer.

In the Under-13 Girls competition, Isabel Louth came close to a winning club double with a runner up placing . Five other Scarborough competitors dominated the competition, with Hannah Ellam 4th, Katie Tomlinson 5th, Sophie Body 6th, Daisy Willis 7th and Isabel Matique 8th.

Sheffield Indoor Open Athletics

Two of Scarborough Athletic Club’s most prolific junior competitors competed at an open indoor event at the Sheffield Institute of Sport Indoor Arena which stages top class international events.
