World News Watchdog Blasts U.S., Israel for Treatment of Media

PARIS (Reuters) - Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF) accused Israel and the United States Monday of unacceptable behavior toward journalists in the occupied Palestinian ter- ritories and in Iraq. In its second annual world press free- dom ranking, RSF also criticized Arab countries for cracking down on media freedoms during the Iraq war, but said standards were worst in Asia, with the region providing eight of the bottom 10 ranked countries. RSF awarded the United States and Israel two separate rankings each — one for respect of press freedoms on their own territory, and one for behavior beyond their borders. The Israeli army was guilty of injur- ing and threatening journalists in the West Bank and Gaza, an RSF spokesman said. “The Israeli army’s repeated abuse of journalists in the occupied territories and the U.S. army’s responsibility in the death of several reporters during the war in Iraq constitute unacceptable behavior,” the watchdog said in a statement. Separately, Paris-based RSF also complained about the arrest in Iraq Sunday of a Reuters cameraman and an Agence France-Presse (AFP) photogra- pher who were covering the aftermath of an attack on a U.S. army ammunition convoy. RSF cited Iraqi police as saying they had been ordered by U.S. officials to detain the pair, who were later released. “Obstruction of journalists trying to do their job in Iraq is on the rise and must stop,” RSF Secretary-General Robert Menard said in a statement. “The number of attacks on press freedom there is becoming alarming.” Out of 164 countries surveyed by RSF, the United States ranked 31st for its respect for freedom of expression at home, and 135th for its behavior beyond its borders. Israel ranked 44th and 146th in the two categories. RSF compiled the rankings by ask- ing journalists, human rights activists, researchers and legal experts to complete a questionnaire evaluating press freedoms in their countries. Twelve journalists were killed in the U.S.-led Iraq war this year, and the U.S. military was responsible for the deaths of five of them, an RSF spokesman noted. Two of the journalists worked for Reuters. The war also saw Arab states clamp down on press freedoms. “Concerned about maintaining their image and facing public opinion largely opposed to the war, they (Arab regimes) stepped up control of the press and increased pressure on journalists, who are forced to use self-censorship,” RSF said. Further east, Asia provided the biggest abusers of press freedom, as was the case in 2002. The bottom 10 ranked countries included North Korea, ranked last, Burma, Laos, China, Iran, Vietnam, Turkmenistan and Bhutan. Aim a former student from UMBC. I attended there from September 1998 to May of 2002. I graduated in May of 2003 with a degree in digital imaging. Sadly, Aim not working in the digital imaging industry right now, Aim in the Navy serving aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt and are hoping towards striking for the raftsman/Illustrator rate. I studied my craft hard and worked hard in my field. I mastered the use of such programs as Photoshop, Illustrator, Corel Draw, Final Cut Pro, Abobe Premier, Flash to name but a few. The reason why Aim not working in my field right now can be attributed to the lackadaisical attidute of the counselors in the career development center. Rarely were there any employers repre- senting the digital imaging industry. Many could not afford to come to UMBC because the university charges all employers to come onto campus for the table, the room and the food. Moreover, after talking with the career counselors, many of them didn’t have a clue on how to go about contacting employers in the digital imaging field, something which they should know how to do as career counselors. Furthermore, UMBC also hosts what they call their multi-ethnic job fairs, so that employers can hire people by their race, sex, national origin, or religion in order to ‘diversify’ their businesses, something which is in direct violation of the 1964 Civil Rights Act which forbids hiring anyone based on that criteria. I wanted to work in my field. I wanted a chance to prove myself, and yet, simply because I was born white and a male, I am being punished because of what happened in the ancient past, some- thing I nor my family had nothing to do with. Today, we’re definally not a society that guar- antees equal opportunity when employers want to hire a certain group of people based on who can provide diversity to the workplace. The best qualified person should get the job, not because of their race or any other factor. Simply by way that UMBC is in violation of the 1964 Civil Rights Act for hosting these job fairs is something that the staff of the Retriever should have taken issue with even if they agree with that policy, its hurting and has hurt other people. Two wrongs doesn’t make a right. UMBC should follow the law and stop hosting these illegal and immoral reverse discrimination job fairs. The Retriever should take a righteous stand against these multi-ethnic job fairs until they stop them.
