As the car turned onto Independence Avenue , the President said that he would really like to take a drive out to Dupont Circle and to the 18th and Columbia Road area to look at "hippies," because he'd never seen one, he said.

_' At the Smithsonian, the President stopped the car and said he'd trade cars with, the Secret Service, so his party changed into the Secret Service follow- \ up -- a Station Wagon. -- w/ driver, mf, and Lem Johns in front seat. Vicky McHugh. Mrs. Johnson, and the President in second seat, and I Jones and Simon McHugh in rear. The President didn't find the air conditioning adequate, so he lowered his window and put his elbow on the window and sort of leaned out. He was recognized by passing tourists . at a stop light -- they were quit e surprised to say the least to see the President leaning out the window of a Mercury station wagon -- and , the President did stop and say. "How are you?" ASB The Secret service were following behind in the President's limousine.

On Connecticut Avenue, the President said he thought he ought to hide his face a bit, so he put on his dark glasses. At Dupont Circle, the President asked j Mrs. Johnson to try to find some "hippies" for him to see -- not many were out, but the President did get to see a couple of them. The car followed the outer section of the circle two times around, and then moved to the inner : section...fo r two times around, The second time around the President got a j good look at the long haired, necklace draped, rope tied clothed fellows j sitting around on the benches. He took special interest in one who had a | !_ bundle of pamphlets under his arm, distributing them to anyone who would I j take them The second time around, people began to notice the big black limousine and the President said we had better get on our way. .The statio n wago n then proceeded to the 18t h and Columbi a Roa d area. Ther e wa s not much evidence o f hippi e life, othe r tha n a psych edelic theate r i n front o f which ~ a bearded character wa s sweeping . Th e President note d that he had been tol d that thi s area was th e area i n which most o f the robberies too k place an d that i t was a dangerous area. Mrs . Johnso n remarked tha t the y had lived nea r thi s area twic e during their time s i n Washington --on Kalorama Road , an d they were surprise d a t th e living condition s around there now .

The Presiden t sai d that h e might lik e t o go visit Courtenay , s o the statio n wagon moved toward the Valenti house. A s th e President passed a wooded area o n Massachusetts Avenue , th e Presiden t said , "Didn' t we KXKJJ X use t o i _ walk in there?" Mrs . Johnso n said sh e wasn't sure. A s the car passe d little par k areas an d flowe r areas , th e President inquire d of Mrs. Johnso n if eac h area wasn't a par t o f he r handiwor k in beautification.

' The President went directly to the ticker machines, and was unhappy to learn that he had been spotted at church, for ksx he read on the ticker that he had attended 5:15 Mass at St. Domini c's. He then went to his signing table and signed mail there.

7:25p To second floo r - w/ ' McHughs, Jim Jones, mf -- and to bedroom. The President changed to sports shirt and slacks - for bowling (Mrs. Johnson and Lynda had already gone to the bowling alley). The President asked that the Krims be invited to join --they had gone to the White House direct from the boat-- they were not ready, so the President et al went to third floor and waited for them in the Hall.

7:50p Down the elevator and through the Flower Garden and to the dog pens w/ Mr. and Mrs. Krim, Mr. and Mrs. McHugh. Jim Jones, mf Mr. and Mrs. Jack Valenti arrived at this time and joined at the dog pens. The President then walked out the Southwest Gate, and through the Southwest ,—. Exec Gate - to the bowling alley - i Bowling w/ Mrs. Johnson, Lynda, Chuck Robb, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Krim
