NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS GIANTS CELEBRATE 25th ANNIVERSARY OF SUPER BOWL XXV The Giants are celebrating the 25th anniversary of one of their most successful and memorable teams in franchise history, the 1990 squad that won Super Bowl XXV. In 1990, the Giants won their first 10 games and finished the regular season with a 13-3 record. They routed the Chicago Bears in an NFC Divisional Playoff Game, 31-3. The following week, Matt Bahr’s 42-yard field goal as time expired gave the Giants a 15-13 victory over the two-time defending champion 49ers in San Francisco in the conference champion- ship game. The Giants won their second title in five seasons when they defeated the Buffalo Bills, 20-19, in the Super Bowl. The 1990 Giants featured two current members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, head coach Bill Parcells and linebacker Lawrence Taylor. Quarterback Phil Simms started the first 14 games before he suffered a foot injury and was relieved by Jeff Hostetler. The team also included running back Ottis Anderson, the Super Bowl MVP, plus Carl Banks, Pepper Johnson and Leonard Marshall on defense. QUOTABLE ON COACH BILL PARCELLS’ PHILOSOPHY FOR THE 1990 SEASON: “Parcells is ‘win with defense and don’t lose the game for me offense.’ That was the philosophy and it worked.” CENTER BART OATES QUOTABLE ON WHAT ‘ONCE A GIANT, ALWAYS A GIANT’ MEANS: “‘Once a Giant, always a Giant’ means to me that we’re always going to be celebrating and remembering those special moments that are going to be with us for the rest of our lives. You can’t deny history and it’s really cool, very special to be able to have that in your history. ” DEFENSIVE TACKLE ERIK HOWARD HONORING ANN MARA, FRANK GIFFORD This season, the Giants are honoring two of their legends who passed away this year by wearing a com- memorative patch and decal on their uniforms. Ann Mara, who died on Feb. 1 at age 85 and she was the matriarch of the Giants organization, is being honored with a jersey patch. Gifford, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1977 and died on Aug. 9 at age 84, is being honored by the team with a No. 16 decal -- Gifford’s jersey number -- on the back of their helmets. 2015 new york giants • week 10 • VS. • New York Giants 2012 Season Recap 2012 New York Giants
NEW YORK GIANTS 2012 SEASON RECAP The 2012 Giants finished 9-7 and in second place in the NFC East. It was the eighth consecutive season in which the Giants finished .500 or better, their longest such streak since they played 10 seasons in a row without a losing record from 1954-63. The Giants finished with a winning record for the third consecutive season, the first time they had done that since 1988-90 (when they were 10-6, 12-4, 13-3). Despite extending those streaks, they did not earn a postseason berth. The Giants lost control of their playoff destiny with back-to-back late-season defeats in Atlanta and Baltimore. They routed Philadelphia in their finale, but soon learned they were eliminated when Chicago beat Detroit. The Giants compiled numerous impressive statistics in 2012. They scored 429 points, the second-highest total in franchise history; the 1963 Giants scored 448. The 2012 season was the fifth in the 88-year history of the franchise in which the Giants scored more than 400 points. The Giants scored a franchise- record 278 points at home, shattering the old mark of 248, set in 2007. In their last three home games – victories over Green Bay, New Orleans and Philadelphia – the Giants scored 38, 52 and 42 points. The 2012 team allowed an NFL-low 20 sacks. The Giants were fourth in the NFL in both takeaways (35, four more than they had in 2011) and turnover differential (plus-14, a significant improvement over 2011’s plus-7). The plus-14 was the Giants’ best turnover differential since they were plus-25 in 1997.

  • The Ice Bowl: the Cold Truth About Football's Most Unforgettable Game
SPORTS | FOOTBALL $16.95 GRUVER An insightful, bone-chilling replay of pro football’s greatest game. “ ” The Ice Bowl —Gordon Forbes, pro football editor, USA Today It was so cold... THE DAY OF THE ICE BOWL GAME WAS SO COLD, the referees’ whistles wouldn’t work; so cold, the reporters’ coffee froze in the press booth; so cold, fans built small fires in the concrete and metal stands; so cold, TV cables froze and photographers didn’t dare touch the metal of their equipment; so cold, the game was as much about survival as it was Most Unforgettable Game About Football’s The Cold Truth about skill and strategy. ON NEW YEAR’S EVE, 1967, the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers met for a classic NFL championship game, played on a frozen field in sub-zero weather. The “Ice Bowl” challenged every skill of these two great teams. Here’s the whole story, based on dozens of interviews with people who were there—on the field and off—told by author Ed Gruver with passion, suspense, wit, and accuracy. The Ice Bowl also details the history of two legendary coaches, Tom Landry and Vince Lombardi, and the philosophies that made them the fiercest of football rivals. Here, too, are the players’ stories of endurance, drive, and strategy. Gruver puts the reader on the field in a game that ended with a play that surprised even those who executed it. Includes diagrams, photos, game and season statistics, and complete Ice Bowl play-by-play Cheers for The Ice Bowl A hundred myths and misconceptions about the Ice Bowl have been answered.
