Youth Happening This Week D’var Torah : Rav James

Sunday The clue is in the title: Parashat ‘Mishpatim’ is essentially a list of civil and 9:45am KYHS Mishmar with Rabbi Nachbar societal laws in the Torah. The list begins by detailing laws which are all necessary for the running of a society – how to treat your slave, the Monday prohibition against murder, oxen which cause damage, and the loaning of 7:30pm Middle School Mishmar in the Beit Midrash & Modular money. However, there is one unexpected item in this list. The Torah says: 8:30pm High School Monday Learning with Bnei Akiva & NCSY in Beit Midrash ‘And everything I have said to you, you should do, and the name of other gods you should not recall and they should not be heard on your

lips.’ (Shemot 23:13) How does this – the law against using the names of Wednesday other gods – fit in with the theme of the preceding laws? To compound this 6:15pm Cub Scouts in Rooms 3-4 question, the Torah continues from there to discuss the three Foot Festivals 6:15pm Girl Scouts in Room 5 and some of their related laws. What place does this section have amidst the 7:30pm Boy Scouts in Rooms 1 & 2 ‘Mishpatim’? The Meshech Chochma writes about the relationship between 7:30pm Bnei Akiva Tzevet Meeting in Room 6 these two seemingly out-ofplace concepts – of naming other gods and of the three festivals. When people came to Jerusalem at the time of the Foot

Festivals they would see all of the ceremony and celebration, and also the Thursday Keruvim (the angelic children carved out of gold on top of the Ark of the 8:00pm Latte & Learn Dunkin Donut Covenant). The Meshech Chochma explains that people would have made comparisons with Avodah Zarah, which is why the law mentioning idol worship is a necessary precursor to the verses about the Foot Festivals. The Youth Upcoming Events same answer can also be applied to our question about the relevance of these verses amidst the civil laws of Parashat Mishpatim. It is easy to see Scoutmaster Camp how the ‘Mishpatim’ of this week’s Parasha are a necessary social structure, February 16-18, 2018 which is put in place by any civilised society. However, this is not the correct MS Youth Council way to look at it. The prohibition against mentioning the names of other gods February 20, 2018 7:00-8:00pm in Rooms 1 & 2 comes to remind us that our laws are not just like those of any society; they Mommy & Me are not solely about reason, necessity and morality. Rather, Hashem is February 24, 2018 10:15am in Chapel reminding us that these laws are first and foremost Divine laws. Laws which Adar Color War we assume to be purely down to reason could also be dismissed on the February 25, 2018 details to follow grounds of reason. Consequently, our ‘Mishpatim’ may play a part in Purim Youth Chesed facilitating a just and moral society – but they nonetheless remain the word of February 25, 2018, 4:00-5:00pm Hashem, and that is ultimately why we must observe them.
