Bringing Africa South ay May 3 BISHOPS KE ON 101 Court hearing today on harrassment of civilians by soldiers

THREE Namibian bishops and at least 20 others are bringing an urgent Supreme Court application today against the SWA Territory Force's 101 Battalion in an attempt to end harassment and intimidation by members of this unit. Bishop James Kauluma of the Anglican Church, Catholic Bishop Boniface Haushiku, and Bishop Kleopas Dumeni of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia head almost 30 applicants in the case. 1be respondents in the matter include the Office Commanding 10 1 Battalion and two individual members of the unit. Lawyers for the Legal Assistance Centre, who are appearing in the matter for the applicants, said relief is not being sought from the other respondents which include the Administrator General and the Officer Commanding the SW A Territory Force. The application is believed to run into more than 140 pages, but la wyers have expressed their hope that a ruling will be handed down today as the matter is one of urgency . Observers believc it is imperative that relief is granted before Thursday, the 11 th anniversary of the Cassinga massacre. In a rcct:nt and similar Supreme Court application, Swapo and Nanso members sought an interdict to prevent soldiers and police from intimidating and harassing their supporters. The application resulted in an out of court settlement, wi th police and army chiefs promising to instruct their members to desist from harassing Nanso and Swapo members in the country. Observers have speculated that this agreement has not been adhered to, and thus the need for another application. * The Namibian will publish a ful l report on the application in its Friday edition.
