Servant of God Isaac Thomas Hecker – First Pastor of St. Paul ’s

Please, check out the new and magnificent historical exhibit near the NE corner of the Church. This display celebrates the first pastor of St. Paul the Apostle, Servant of God Isaac T. Hecker, C.S.P.

The Paulists were founded in 1858 by Fr. Hecker and four other priests who were all converts to Catholicism. That same year Archbishop John Hughes asked this new religious community to establish a parish in what was then the far reaches of Manhattan.

The first church and rectory were one building, functional but not beautiful. Father Hecker, who had studied for the priesthood in Europe, had a grand vision to build a church that would rival the neo -Gothic cathedrals of Europe. Another of the Paulist Founders, Fr. George Deshon, had studied military engineering at West Point where he was roommates with Ulysses S. Grant. Fr. Deshon oversaw the construction of our spiritual home, which was dedicated on January 25, 1885.

This year the Paulists are celebrating the bicentennial of the birth of Fr. Hecker, who was born on December 18, 1819 on the lower east side of Manhattan of German immigrant parents. His mother was a devout Methodist and his father a lapsed Lutheran. Isaac Hecker helped his brothers build a flour milling and bakery business but was always a spiritual searcher. As a young man he had a mystical bent and explored the Transcendentalists in Boston, the Episcopal church as well as the, Mormons and Unitarians before converting to Catholicism and becoming a priest.

Sirviente de Dios Isaac Thomas Hecker - Primer Pastor de San Pablo

Por favor, échale una mirada a la nueva y magnífica exposición histórica cerca de la esquina noreste de la iglesia. Esta exhibición celebra al primer pastor de San Pablo Apóstol, Sirviente de Dios Isaac T. Hecker, C.S.P.

Los paulistas fueron fundados en 1858 por el p. Hecker y otros cuatro curas que se convirtieron al catolicismo. Ese mismo año, el arzobispo John Hughes le pidió a esta nueva comunidad religiosa que estableciera una parroquia en lo que era en ese tiempo lo mas lejos de Manhattan.

La primera iglesia y la rectoría eran un edificio, funcional pero no hermoso. El padre Hecker, que había estudiado para el sacerdocio en Europa, tuvo la gran visión de construir una iglesia que rivalizara con las catedrales neogóticas de Europa. Otro de los fundadores paulistas, el p. George Deshon, había estudiado ingeniería militar en West Point, donde era compañero de cuarto con Ulysses S. Grant. P. Deshon supervisó la construcción de nuestro hogar espiritual, que se dedicó el 25 de enero de 1885.

Este año los paulistas celebran el bicentenario del nacimiento del Padre. Hecker, quien nació el 18 de diciembre de 1819 en el lado este de Manhattan de padres inmigrantes alemanes. Su madre era una metodista devota y su padre, un luterano ex practicante. Isaac Hecker ayudó a sus hermanos a construir un negocio de harina y panadería, pero siempre fue un buscador espiritual. De joven tuvo una inclinación mística y exploró a los trascendentalistas en Boston, la iglesia episcopal y los mormones y unitarios antes de convertirse al catolicismo y convertirse en cura.

Gracias a los archivistas paulistas Michelle Levy y Christina Orozco por crear esta fascinante mirada hacia atrás en nuestra historia parroquial.
