Like any good Crusader, Donohoe came prepared. He Donohoe was admitted to the University of San Francisco had obviously thought through his time at Riordan, and answered each question eloquently. He is also humble; during the interview he was surprised to learn that he was the first alumnus to play in the National Football League.

Donohoe spoke fondly about his experience at Riordan and the fundamental things he learned that would take him to the NFL where he played seven seasons for two teams, the Atlanta Falcons and the Green Bay Packers. He also played one season for the World Football League. Listening to Donohoe, I was struck by the fact that he did not feel that athletics defined him. Instead, he took a strong stance on balancing academics and sports. “I’m not sure if I learned the life lessons on the field, or in the classroom, or both,” Donohoe said. “You had to learn how to manage your time.”

He made a point of explaining to me that his admittance to USF was not by athletic scholarship but rather his merits in the classroom. “There was a mentality that academics were more important than sports, and that athletes must do as well in the classroom as they do on the field,” he said.

At the age of 18, Donohoe was 6’2” and weighed in at 175 pounds. Donohoe pointed out to the coach that he had a bad knee, but the coach convinced him to give it a try. He made the team and played tight end at USF for three seasons (’65, ’66, and ‘67). The Stanfel Cup has always been marked by great friend- ships and friendly rivalries, and this year’s contest between Archbishop Riordan High School and Sacred Heart Cathedral (SHC) proved to be no exception.

The Stanfel Cup is named for Nicholas Stanfel ’83, who played football at Riordan and later at the College of San Mateo and Cal Lutheran University. A ARCHBISHOP RIORDAN HIGH SCHOOL - FY 2012-13 ANNUAL GIVING REPORT A Message From the Director of Development

Patrick w. Daly

Dear Riordan Community,

Seeing a student population that truly represents the world’s diversity is a gift at Archbishop Riordan High School that we cannot take for granted. Shepherding this gift wisely is our mission, and we strive to prepare our young men to become outstanding leaders in their own right. Under the leadership of Mr. Joseph Conti, my responsibility as the Director of Development is to raise the necessary funds to provide financial assistance to qualified families so we can continue to provide an affordable, quality education in the Marianist tradition to all young men who seek it.

Each day, the devoted Archbishop Riordan faculty, staff, and administration are meeting the challenges of a 21st century education on Phelan Avenue. Here’s an example of this type of leadership. Two years ago when discerning how to better prepare our young men for their future, including the ever competitive employment and college markets, Riordan adopted a technology-driven curriculum with the 1:1 iPad program. Under the leadership of our Academic Technology Department, the school evaluated the educational and practical needs of students and faculty, and how our campus infrastructure would physically support more than 900 wireless devices. With input from internal audiences and outside consultants, they created a plan to transition the school to the use of iPads in the classroom and install a state-of-the-art wireless system to support this new program. Technology is an ongoing area of focus for faculty professional development, and for students we are building an ethics in technology curriculum so they leave Riordan with a better understanding of how to positively use technology.

Where do these accomplishments leave us today? In 2011 the school completed a 20-year masterplan to address the aging facilities of Riordan. Part of those plans called for the renovation of our campus, including the modernization of our classrooms, music center and athletic facilities. Following through on this $61 million dollar masterplan is necessary to carry Riordan into the next 100 years of all male Marianist education. Your support of the $1.8 million dollars of financial aid awarded is just one area of need. We are also in the silent phase of the $2.2 million dollar Field Project. This project kicks off the renovations that will enhance the educational experience of our current and future students, while bringing Riordan onto a level playing field with our competition.

Many other Catholic schools in the Bay Area have invested tens of millions of dollars, funds from alumni, foundations and other sources, to transform and modernize their campuses. Now it is Riordan’s turn. We look forward to your support of the annual pledge, and we ask that you keep the staff and young men of Riordan in your thoughts and prayers.

GO CRUSADERS!

God Bless You,

However, when the race official handed me a medal and said, “You are an Ironman,” the pain went away and was replaced with a sense of accomplishment that I will never forget.

Over the next few days as my body returned to normal, I started to think about the similarities of running a success- ful accounting firm and completing an Ironman. Just as there is a great feeling of crossing the finish line, in business there is a similar feeling knowing that you made a significant contribution to help clients achieve their goals. Here are my thoughts on how these two worlds collide:

1. You need a plan. Don’t fool yourself. Competing in an Ironman takes a big commitment. Figuring out the logistics of training and the balance between your normal life—family, work, recreation and friends—are all obstacles to overcome. Running a business also takes comprehensive planning. If you don’t know where you are going, how will you know when you get there?

Jacob Valdiviezo ‘11 On March 30, the Riordan community lost Jacob Valdiviezo, a loved and respected Crusader alumnus, classmate, teammate, friend and brother.

After graduating from Riordan with honors, Jacob attended Lewis & Clark College in Oregon where he excelled as a wide receiver on the football team. In a letter, Barry Glassner, President of Lewis & Clark College, noted Jacob’s “ever-present smile and infectious enthusiasm endeared him to all who knew him.” The letter also described how Jacob befriended Patrick, a young man with special needs, who serves as unofficial trainer for L&C’s football and basketball teams. Jacob made CDs for Patrick and served as Patrick’s “go-to” whenever Patrick needed help or support. He lived his life embracing others.

Jacob is the son of Carlos and Margarita Valdiviezo, and brother of Carlos ’07.

In his honor, Archbishop Riordan created the Jacob Valdiviezo Memorial Scholarship. In honor of their fallen brother, 100% of the Class of 2013 made a contribution to the Valdiviezo Scholarship during their final weeks as Riordan students last May. For more information on how you can support this scholarship, please contact Mr. Patrick Daly, [email protected] or (415)586-8200 ext. 264.
