YS 4 Your Steyning May 2014 • www.yoursteyning.co.uk Steyning Arts Summer Art Trail 2014

With the festival season on the horizon, Steyning artists and crafts people are preparing for this year’s Art Trail, which features 19 venues from Ashurst to Lancing.

More than happy to talk about their work, local artists will be displaying and selling their creations in the relaxed atmosphere of homes, studios and local businesses.

Steyning Arts is a co-operative of artists enjoying opportunities to exhibit their work in Steyning and beyond. Along with some familiar names there will be some new artists and new venues. Joining them will be the Steyning Camera Club and on advertised days with an exhibition of sixth form students’ course work and The Towers Convent School showing their GCSE artwork.

Quality jewellery, photography, ceramics and glass, prints and paintings will be there for visitors on the trail to browse at their leisure. There is something for everybody’s pocket from greeting card to canvas, with much of the artwork inspired by the local scenery, illustrating the richness of our beautiful county from downland to shoreline.

Artists and organisers of Steyning Arts welcome you to venues that will be open weekends 24th of May to 8th June 11.00 am to 4.00pm including Spring Bank Holiday, unless otherwise stated in the brochure. For more information visit www.steyningarts.co.uk

Give Your Stuff Away Day Returns Sunday 5th May 1-5pm! The Greening Campaign is re-launching the highly successful Give Your Stuff Away Day on Sunday 5th May.

The focus of the event is to divert waste from landfill and to make useful items available to others for free. There are two ways to take part. You can leave your items outside your home in clear view, or bring your items to our central collection point at the Catholic Church in Steyning, between 1pm & 5pm, where there’ll be teas and cake on sale, collection boxes for those hard to recycle recyclables [ink cartridges, water filters, batteries etc] and volunteers to answer your recycling questions.

At the end of the day you can text your postcode to the Recycled Goods Factory (tel. 07564 169211) and they will come and pick up anything not taken.

What is “stuff”? Any useful household items that are functioning, (including electricals), but please no rubbish, illegal or dangerous items, or chemicals.

So bring some stuff, or take some stuff, or just enjoy the community buzz (with tea and cake!) Further dates for your diary are 6th July, 5th October and another post-Christmas stuff-shuffle on 4th January 2015. Please do not leave anything at the Catholic Church before 1pm.

Big Church Day Out 2014!

It’s hard to believe, but this May the Big Church Day Out will be entering it’s sixth year. On the 24th & 25th May the Goring family will again be opening the gates of Wiston Park again as 20,000 people from around the UK and beyond descend upon the beautiful estate for this hugely popular event. If you haven’t been to the Big Church Day Out before, it’s the UK’s largest outdoor Christian event and prides itself on having something for the whole family. The main features are the different music stages, all covering a wide variety of music styles. There is the main stage, the center point of the event, that plays host to some of the biggest Christian and Gospel artists from around the world and this year also features X Factors Jahmene Douglas on the Saturday.

Next there is the Tea Tent located in the beautiful gardens behind Wiston House, where there is a constant supply of cream teas and scones being served all day. With a very laid back atmosphere this is the perfect place to come, relax and soak in the glorious surroundings, all whilst listening to international artists that this year includes Britain’s Got Talent stars, the Incognito gospel choir.

A Thorny Issue Whatever your opinion of roses, there’s no denying that this flower is the epitome of traditional English gardening, and maybe for some that’s just the problem. For some people the memories of insipid flowers sitting above leggy stalks and diseased leaves is enough to put them off ever planting another rose bush again.

Classified as a woody perennial, with over a hundred species Cathedral’ which look fabulous when under planted with it is still by far one of Britain’s favourite plants. Native to lavender or lush low growing evergreens. Finally for a China, the humble rose grows well in our climate, where wonderful thornless variety try Rosa ‘Mortimer Sackler’. the cool moist winters and warm (ish) summers mean that as long as we don’t experience too much rain (which can cause Happy gardening petals to fuse together before fully opening) plants should live happily for many years. Lee Contact Lee Bestall at www.inspiredgardens.net That said they are not ‘forever plants’ and should not be held on to for sentimental reasons. I’ve removed no end of beds planted up in the 60’s with nothing more than clumps of baked clay soil as their companion.

Roses are best planted bare root between November and February but are most often purchased containerised when in flower during the summer months. If well watered in their first year, roses planted this way should establish well. Plant slightly deeper than you think you need, burying the graft (woody knuckle) fractionally below the soil.

Humans are not the only admirers of roses and they can suffer from numerous pests and diseases so prepare yourself for battle. Problems include; brown scale, rose aphids, rose leaf-rolling sawfly, rose dieback, rose powdery mildew, rose blackspot and rose rust. That said there are disease- resistant varieties, and prevention is always better than cure. If planted in good soil (they don’t mind heavy clay) and in a well prepared hole with some homemade compost or manure, then fed in March with a special rose fertiliser before another layer of compost or manure is placed on top, and watered well they will provide you with a long lasting combination of colour and scent. For added interest, why not grow two varieties together which complement each other, or flower at different times for lengthier impact.

On a sunny wall try; Rosa ‘Blush Noisette’, a great repeat flowerer with small double pink flowers, ‘Lady Waterlow’ for silky pink blooms and healthy foliage, ‘Gertrude Jekyll’ for exquisite scent, or ‘Etoile de Hollande’ for a splash of rich scarlet red. Ground cover roses such as the ‘flower carpet range’ are great for covering banks and are extremely low maintenance, or try an avenue of standard roses such as ‘Winchester YS 28 Your Steyning May 2014 • www.yoursteyning.co.uk Your Steyning May 2014 • www.yoursteyning.co.uk YS 29 YS 30 Your Steyning May 2014 • www.yoursteyning.co.uk Your Steyning May 2014 • www.yoursteyning.co.uk YS 31 YS 32 Your SteyningYour September Steyning 2013 May •2014 www.yoursteyning.co.uk • www.yoursteyning.co.uk Your Steyning May 2014 • www.yoursteyning.co.uk YS 33 YS 34 Your SteyningYour September Steyning 2013 May •2014 www.yoursteyning.co.uk • www.yoursteyning.co.uk Your Steyning May 2014 • www.yoursteyning.co.uk YS 35 YS Local News Sussex Guild Craft Show at Parham House To see, buy and be inspired by the very best work by , College Lane, designer makers from the Sussex area, come along to one Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex BN6 9JS of the Sussex Guild Contemporary Craft Shows or visit our November 2 - 3, 10.00am - 5.00pm Shop & Gallery in Lewes. , North Street, Midhurst, West Sussex GU29 9DT The Sussex Guild is a group of selected, professional designer November 29 - 30, 10.00am - 5.00pm makers of contemporary and traditional crafts who live and work in Sussex or the surrounding counties. Say hello to Lottie, who will be 2yrs in August and has the honour of being May’s Pet of the Month sponsored by Stylish Fido. Lottie is a Bichon Poodle cross who lives in Steyning with her doggie mum Lacey and human owner Sue. As you can see, she is rather a cutie having a super white coat and gorgeous dark button eyes.

As you can imagine, Lottie is a playful little dog, who taps her owner’s leg for playtime and treats after her walks. Her favourite food is chicken and her favourite playmate is Roxy a chocolate Sprocker, who she plays with on the cricket field. She even has sleepovers with Roxy when she is good! Lottie is usually very well behaved, and sits nicely waiting for teatime, but she does like to pinch her mum’s toys to play with, so she’s a bit cheeky too!
