NEWSLETTER Highlights

MUN Virtual Conference Our MUN advisor, Jon Van Tassell, helped us successfully run our 38th annual MVHS MUN conference virtually and in person. Our MUN Booster did a great job to help us safely accommodate, social distance, and feed all our MUN students Mr. Van Tassell noted that a thank you was in order to our principal, “for always checking in and giving us the confidence that it was possible. Our MUN Scholars were phenomenal hosts and truly a model example of the UN.”

Taking the Farm Virtual MVHS Agriscience students competed at the Orange Section FFA speech contest and took away top honors. The competition was held virtually, students wore the official dress, and spoke on camera to a panel of judges/interviewers. More than 100 students competed in 6 different speech contests and the following MVHS students received awards: Sophia Melberg, Jesus Espinosa, Alissa Alvarez, Shea Simpson, Elise Reynolds, Zoe Angustain, Alison Bushong, Dylan Lai, Olivia Carlucci, Kayleigh Boelts, Erik Gomez, Ava Parra, Bree Kenney, Curtis Johnson (shown right), Emmanual Membreno, and Jessica Espinosa. Congrats to FFA students, Amanda Adams, Javonne Mullins, and Cherie Shook! Shay Sharp Teacher of the Year Shay aims to be the "guide on the side" rather than the "sage on the stage" (by using the "I do, we do, you do" model, Socratic seminars, gallery walks, chalk talks, focused group work, challenging texts with critical thinking questions, process writing, and Making Thinking Visible strategies). She consistently observes and assesses the achievements and gaps in her students' learning so she can meet them where they are. According to Shay, “I think the role of a teacher is to help his or her students to develop the analytical and synthesis skills in order to prepare them 3for careers and life in the digital age.” It’s clear to anyone who spends time in her classroom, that Shay does just that.

Can’t Stop The Music

Instrumental Music Students of our instrumental music programs worked for months to create 11 total projects last semester for our virtual Fall/Winter concert. This included our Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, String Orchestra, Jazz 1, Jazz 2, and Brass Ensemble. Projects are viewable on the YouTube channel and the Fall Concert website. Doug Meeuwsen and Robert Westphal worked tirelessly to bring these stellar students work to the spotlight.

Choral Music Congratulations senior Lexi Cook (pictured lower left) is a Semi-Finalist for OC Artist of the Year in Classical Voice. Congratulations to junior Joe Oberholzer (pictured below), who was selected (over 1,500 applicants from schools across the state) to participate in the All-State Honor Band. MVHS Treble Choir and Chamber Singers both earned Gold (Superior) ratings and top honors in the exclusive WoldStrides Virtual Choir Festival. Due to the high quality of their performances, both groups were also invited to the Festival of Gold 2022! Out of the approximately 50 high schools nationally that entered, MVHS Chamber Singers were recognized by placing second place for all choirs from each high school in the top mixed choir division. Congratulations MVHS Choir and Chamber Singers!

“Talking to the coaches, they were really inspiring, they were forthright, they had the same values and visions I saw myself and my college future with. I knew that they had what it takes to develop me into the player I wanted to be,” Sperling said. “The team environment and the players were super welcoming, so that was definitely a plus too.”

Sperling, who is the first Oregon commit from the class of 2022 in California, said that she wanted to play in the Pac-12 Conference, home to USC, Stanford, Colorado, Cal and Arizona State. She was also impressed with the beautiful athletic facility at Oregon.

“I think it’ll be super fun. It’ll be definitely be challenging, but it will definitively make us more disciplined when training,” Sperling said about playing in the Pac-12.

Sperling, a member of the 2020 OC National Tournament team, finished her sophomore season with 25 goals and 13 assists, leading Mission Viejo in both categories. Sperling helped the Diablos finish with a record of 3-2 before the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

An interesting fun fact about Sperling’s commitment to Oregon is that she is the fourth girls lacrosse player from her neigh- borhood to commit to a Division 1 girls lacrosse school. The other three are Megan Armes (St.Mary’s), Shelley Cummings (Fresno State) and Maryn Macha (Cal).

“I grew up playing soccer my whole life and then right as we [my family] moved into this neighborhood, I started meeting all of them and they told me their story and their journey playing lacrosse,” Sperling said.
