Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners:

Today in union with the Catholic Church in America we celebrate Life in all stages from Conception to Natural Death, “From the Womb to the Tomb.” Let us continue to promote the Culture of Life with our prayers, our votes, and charity to enable women to know that they deserve better than abortion, they deserve our love, respect, and support for the choice of life. Below are some very powerful quotes in support of Life, I hope you enjoy them. Have a Blessed Week.

Fr. Harrigan - The Pastor Top 10 Pro -Life Quotes:

1. “It is a poverty that a “child must die”, So that you may live as you wish.” - Mother Teresa

2. “The Gospel of Life is not for believers alone: it is for everyone. The issue of life and its defense and promotion is not a concern of the Christian alone. Although faith provides special light and strength, this question arises in every human conscience which seeks the truth and which cares about the future of humanity. Life certainly has a sacred and religious value, but in no way is that value a concern only of believers. The value at stake is one which every human being can grasp by the light of reason; thus it necessarily concerns everyone.” - Pope John Paul II

3. “I feel that the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because it is a war against the child, a direct killing of the innocent child, murder by the mother herself. And if we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another? … By abortion, the mother does not learn to love, but kills even her own child to solve her problems. And, by abortion, that father is told that he does not have to take any responsibility at all for the child he has brought into the world. The father is likely to put other women into the same trouble. So abortion just leads to more abortion. Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want. This is why the greatest destroyer of love and peace is abortion.” - Mother Teresa

4. “I’ve noticed that everyone who is for abortion is already born.” - Ronald Reagan

5. “To dissociate the child from love is, for our species, a methodological error: contraception, which is to make love without making a child; artificial (in vitro) fertilization, which is to make a child without making love; abortion, which is to unmake the child; and pornography, which is to unmake love: all these, to varying degrees, are incompatible with natural law.” - Jerome LeJeune

6. “How can there be too many children? That is like saying there are too many flowers.” - Mother Teresa

7. “America you are beautiful…and blessed…. The ultimate test of your greatness is the way you treat every human being, but especially the weakest and most defenseless. If you want equal justice for all and true freedom and lasting peace, then America, defend life.” - Pope John Paul II

8. “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you.” - Jeremiah 1:5

9. “Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person – among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life.” - Catechism of the Catholic Church 2270

10. “The fundamental human right, the presupposition of every other right, is the right to life itself. This is true of life from the moment of conception until its natural end. Abortion, consequently, cannot be a human right - it is the very opposite. It is a deep wound in society.” - Pope Benedict XVI

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Praying that you have a blessed celebration of the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord.

This coming May, I will be celebrating my 21st anniversary of Ordination to the Priesthood and by God’s grace, Archbishop Jose Gomez and the Office of the Vicar for Clergy has granted my request for a four (4) months sabbatical time off from my regular responsibilities here at Mary Star of the Sea and at the port.

A Sabbatical (from Hebrew: shabbat, in Latin: sabbaticus, in Greek: sabbatikos, literally a "ceasing") is a rest from work, or a break, often lasting from a few months to a year. The concept of sabbatical has a source in shmita, described in several places in the Bible. For example, in Leviticus 25, there is a commandment to desist from working the fields during the seventh year.

This is not an extended vacation for me, but a period designated for rest and personal development/ continuing education. I will be visiting family and friends in the Philippines for the month of February and when I come back in March, I will immediately start my program/studies in spirituality in Tucson, Arizona until May. I will be back in the parish in June. Please pray for me on my sabbatical as I would pray for all of you in my masses.

In Christ,

Fr. Freddie Chua

MSHS Phase II of Building Project Begins…

The Building Commission of the Archdiocese of L.A. has approved Mary Star of the Sea High School to continue Phase II of our new building project! We have completed our conceptual design. The new building will include a chapel, a large meeting room, six additional classrooms, six offices, a senior lunch area, and additional parking. Currently groundbreaking is slated to take place between 12 and 20 months from December 2018.

The budget for Phase II will be approximately $9 million. Through the generosity of the Shea Foundation ($4 million) and the Dan Murphy Foundation and several individual gifts and pledges the school has approximately $6 million funded toward this project. In addition to Phase II, we are proud to announce that over the past year we have begun the installation of the football/soccer field, which includes grading, irrigation, sod, and the installation of scoreboards for both the football/soccer and softball fields.
