Sydney High School Old Boys’ Union 2020 University + Early Career Preparation Webinar 2:30pm Sunday 29th November 2020

The Sydney High School Old Boys Union holds regular mentoring, interview training and careers advice sessions for students at the school. Due to the COVID restrictions, the OBU cannot provide these face-to-face in the School Hall as would normally do. As such, The Old Boys, led by Eric Wong (2000); a member of the Union Executive Committee and Foundation Board of Directors, will be organising a series of webinars.

Usually these are available to Years 11 & 12 students who are up to date on their annual Old Boys Union fees, or for a small fee to non-members. However, given the importance of this topic, we are making this session available free of charge to all students from Years 10 to 12, as well as interested parents of that combined cohort.

University + Early Career Preparation Webinar The second in the series is the University + Early Career Preparation session, hosted by Arthur Chao (2016); a member of the Union Executive Committee and the School Council. The aim of the session is to hear from four highly accomplished Old Boys nearing or already graduated from university with experiences across the various areas in the corporate world, ranging from law to banking to technology, explaining the varied nature of careers available, the opportunities in university and their personal journeys. The boys will also have time to ask questions of the speakers.

You will hear from the following Old Boys:

What is the Old Boys Union? The Sydney High School Old Boys Union (SHSOBU) was founded in 1892 and is Australia’s oldest alumni Union. Over the past 128 years, its aim has been to foster and continue the friendships formed by students while at School and then to contribute, through this fellowship, to the corporate spirit and well-being of the School. In a very real sense, the OBU is one of the most consistent and stable part of the School’s community. The Old Boys Union is governed by an Executive Council whose members are elected annually.

Impressive Old Boys are available to assist the School, led by patrons such as Sir James Wolfensohn (1949), AO, KBE, formerly, President of the World Bank. Our alumni include community and business leaders across many fields including medicine, law, engineering, technology, arts, banking and government.

What membership offers Membership provides a lifetime of professional, social, sporting and academic connections with Sydney Boys High School, its extraordinary network of distinguished and successful Old Boys, and the alumni of other GPS schools.

Each member also receives regular e-Bulletin magazines via e-mail. We have an established mentorship network with many Old Boys in various professions prepared to share their wisdom and experience with younger Old Boys and current students who join the Student Life Membership scheme. Our High Achiever and OBU Mentoring programs held yearly, provide valuable guidance to Student Life Members about university courses and career options and interview practice. We also provide employment support and connections to Old Boys across many careers and leadership roles to support you as you move through your chosen career. More details, including on payment can be found here.

Each student who becomes a Life Member of the OBU will be presented with his badge and certificate of Life Membership at the Year 12 farewell assembly.

ENROLMENT DAY for 2021 STUDENTS

Enrolment Day 2020 for 2021 was an unusual day to say the least. Face masks, hand sanitizer, thermometers, covid registrations, an open office and time to actually take a breath.

Your help was invaluable and allowed us to move through the enrolment process as quickly as possible. Thank you for doing such a fantastic job. There were many compliments given on the day regarding our Senior Prefects who were friendly and helpful to both the staff and new parents. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

What does High Spirit mean to you? High Spirit is the underlying thought in my mind that tells me that whatever I do, I do it for my school, for my peers, and then for myself. It reminds me that High is not just a place to get a good mark and get out, but a place to make life-long friends, support others and become a better person. As we all grow and progress through school, we find that one sport, one extra-curricular or one subject that creates a lingering attachment and desire to learn and grow. For me it was Tennis. Meet the Prefect Intern 2021 What have you learnt from playing sport at High? Sport has played an enormous role in shaping my high school experience. I initially entered High for its renowned achievements in academics. However, upon arriving I realised High was much more. I involved myself with tennis and , and they provided a relief from daily obligations of school. It might sound cliche to say that sports has taught me how to stay resilient in the face of adversity but I can confirm its undeniable truth. The seemingly harsh fitness regimes in tennis stretched my comfort-zone. The interconnectedness in volleyball taught me how to operate within a team. I have also realised that by staying disciplined within my dedication to sports, the discipline also leached into my academics. I truly believe engaging in the sporting opportunities High offers has been an invaluable experience for both personal growth and enjoyment.

What does High Spirit mean to you? Photos, Photos, Photos!

High Spirit. The Spirit of High. To me, High Spirit entails the passionate cheers at GPS events. It is the competitiveness on Saturday fixtures. It is the support between peers during camp, at the library, in the classroom, and on the sports ground. But most importantly, High Spirit is mutual trust. This trust is something inexplicable by words, understood only through experiencing it. Trust amongst peers, teachers and coaches is what I believe to be the true essence of
