APRIL 2018 EARTH DAY EVERY DAY n the late 1960s, America in the midst of an environmental wake-up call. Air pollution was linked to disease and death in New York, Los Angeles, and other cities. Ohio’s Cuyahoga River, filled with oil and toxic chemicals, burst into flames. Rachel Carson’s bestseller, Silent Spring, continued to spark outrage over the use of pesticides.

IOn April 22, 1970, in response to this crisis, 20 million people took to the streets for the nation’s first Earth Day. Forty-eight years later, the spirit of Earth Day is stronger than ever as our planet faces climate change and other issues. And as always, it’s an opportunity for people to come together and appreciate the beauty of the natural world. To celebrate Earth Day, WLIW21 is airing specials all month long on Bill Nye, butterflies, climate change, and more.

Ever wonder how butterflies mate? They join at the abdomen, facing away from each other — and some couples stay joined for hours! That’s just one of the fascinating facts you’ll discover in Sex, Lies and Butterflies (Thursday, April 5 at 9pm), a Nature special following Painted Ladies and other butterfly species as they transform from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to winged creature. Explore their astonishing survival techniques — including 360° vision, deceptive camouflage, chemical weaponry, and fantastic flight — and look beyond their bright colors and fragile beauty to follow them on one of the greatest migrations on earth.

Natural Born Rebels (Thursdays, April 26, May 3 and May 10 at 9pm), a three-part Nature series, introduces the most rebellious animals in the natural world, from a promiscuous prairie dog to a kleptomaniac crab and an alpha chimpanzee who reigns with an iron fist.

Climate change is arguably the defining challenge of our time, yet widespread misinformation has made it difficult for politicians and the public to understand and address the issue.

GI JEWS: JEWISH AMERICANS IN WORLD WAR II

More than 550,000 Jewish Americans served their country in the military during World War II. They were held as POWs and awarded honors for merit and valor. Thousands were wounded, and 11,000 were killed in action. Ten thousand Jewish women enlisted, as well, disregarding their parents’ warnings that the military “was no life for a nice Jewish girl.”

Despite the extraordinary contributions of these brave men and women, their story isn’t widely known. Filmmaker COURTESY MAX FUCHS. Lisa Ades brings their struggles to life in GI Jews: Jewish Americans in World War II, premiering as part of WLIW21’s PREMIERES THURSDAY, APRIL 12 AT 9PM ongoing commitment to veterans’ stories of service and airing in honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day.
