Query 5: Plan for Occupational Health should be submitted.

Reply: Sand Mining involves the generation of dust due to excavation, loading and transportation of mineral at site, during excavation and loading activity, dust is main pollutant which affects the health of workers and also deteriorates the environmental and climatic conditions which leads to generate the health problems.

The goal of all occupational health and safety programs is to foster a safe work environment.

Following health related problems were identified due to riverbed sand mining operations to the workers: Sr. Particulars Impact Personal Protective Equipments No. 1. Sun Light & Eye Strain, Headache, Eye Pain, Protective Goggles will be Fugitive dust Watering of Eyes, Itching provided for direct sunlight and fugitive dust 2. Heat & Head Injury Heat Exhaustion, Heat Stroke, Helmets will be provided. Brain stroke. 3. Exposure to Dust Respiratory problem Mask Respirators will be provided. 4. Noise Exposure Hearing problems due to the Earplugs or Earmuffs operation machineries. 5. Foot injury Foot burn in sand, bite of insects Safety footwears etc.

Medical Examination Schedule: The detail of health checkup and periodical medical examination schedule is given below:

Pre- placement medical examination: All workers will be subjected to Pre-Placement Medical Examination as per Mines Rule 1955 at the time of appointment. All the mine workers will be subjected to health checkup before placing them in the job.

Initial medical examinations of mine worker are:  Physical Check-up  Psychological test  Audiometric test  Respiratory test

Periodical Medical examination (PME): The health of the workers will be regularly checked and suitable medical facilitates will be created by the lessees. By periodical medical checkup & treatment and job rotation of employees thus the impact would be minimized.

PM2.5 Level in Air: The level of PM2.5, the atmospheric particulate matter that has a diameter less than 2.5 micrometers, has gone up in Ambedkar Nagar’s air. Unbridled natural pollutants, industrialization and increased of mass transport facilities and the burning of bio-fuels in rural house-holds has let a rapid deterioration of indoor and outdoor air quality.

Anticipated Impact: It may cause breathing discomfort to people with lung disease such as asthma, and discomfort to people with heart disease, children and older adults.

2.1 SOURCE, IMPACT & REMOVAL TECHNOLOGIES:

2.1 (a) NITRATE (NO3¯): Nitrate Level in Ground Water: In Tanda, Ambedkar Nagar high concentration of nitrate has been observed due to untreated city sewage is disposed off in this river through pipes and drain. The results of the chemical analysis revealed that there is a big patch of high nitrate content of the ground water above Permissible Limit (45 mg/l) Source: http://www.indiaenvironmentportal.org.in/files/file/Contamination_of_GroundWater_by_Sewage.pdf

Nitrate Impact: High Concentration of Nitrate in ground water causes Methemoglobinemia, or blue baby syndrome, robs the blood cells of their ability to carry oxygen

Removal of Nitrate: Physical and chemical processes such as reverse osmosis, ion exchange, electro- dialysis and chemical de-nitrification have been developed for nitrate removal from water.

2.1 (b) ARSENIC (As) Arsenic Level in Ground Water: Arsenic contaminated areas' and among the river basins, the Ghaghra basin is most severely arsenic affected region of the Uttar Pradesh state. The occurrence of arsenic contamination reportedly comes from rocks with arsenic eroded from the Himalayas which got deposited as sediments in the alluvial deposits of the Gangetic plain over thousands of years. Sedimentary rocks are supposed to contain higher concentration of arsenic as compared to igneous & volcanic. Source:https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/lucknow/30-UP-districts-in-grip-of-arsenic-poisoning/articleshow/38339052.cms

Arsenic Impact: High arsenic exposure is dermal effects like Patchy skin hyperpigmentation, small focal keratoses, and other skin lesions are common effects of heavy chronic exposure.

Removal of Arsenic: There are several methods available for removal of arsenic from water. Some important methods are Oxidation, Coagulation, Precipitation and filtration, Adsorption (sorptive filtration), Ion exchange & Membrane techniques etc.

3. SOIL QUALITY

Soil Quality in Ambedkar Nagar District:

Generally deep, well drained and fine loamy, with loamy surface; coarse loamy also present along Ghaghra river; calcareous, saline and sodic in small areas in west-central part and eastern fringes; signs of slight erosion in central part around Tons river system Source: http://cgwb.gov.in/District_Profile/UP/Ambedkar%20Nagar.pdf

DISCUSSION

Ordinary earth and Sand has become very important minerals for our society due to its many uses. Ordinary earth can be used for making brick, filling roads, whereas sand may be used as building sites, brick-making, making glass, sandpapers, reclamations, and etc. The role of sand is very vital with regards to the protection of the coastal environment. It acts as a buffer against strong tidal waves and storm surges by reducing their impacts as they reach the shoreline. Clean sand 48
