Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge 18Th – 20Th May 2018 Explorers Connect www.explorersconnect.com www.facebook.com/ExplorersConnect #AdventureRevolution www.twitter.com/explorerstweet Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge 18th – 20th May 2018 If you're looking for a hillwalking challenge in a more unusual and beautiful part of the UK then you'll struggle to beat the Yorkshire Three Peaks! The mountains are arranged in a triangle, with the River Ribble and two minor B roads between them, and the route has a total walking distance of 39.2km (24.5 miles) - but don't worry, the route is manageable by anyone of average fitness with some hillwalking experience. You don't have to be super fit to complete this challenge however the more hillwalking experience you have under your belt, the easier you will find it on the day. Whether you're just starting out or training for a bigger challenge, everyone will enjoy this weekend, gain more confidence in mountain walking and come away with a great sense of achievement! We also don't need to worry about navigation either as we'll have two experienced and qualified Mountain Leaders guiding us across the route on Saturday, so we can just relax and enjoy the stunning scenery over the Dales. ITINERARY We'll aim to arrive at our accommodation in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park from 7pm on Friday evening. We’ll share a buffet dinner and drinks where everyone brings a plate of food to share with the group. After getting to know each other we'll then head to bed to get ready for the following day's challenge. We'll be starting very early on the Saturday morning - but our accommodation is right on the Yorkshire Three Peaks route so we can get started right outside our door! We'll have up to 12 hours to complete the route although it can be done in as little as 8 hours and, on average, takes around 10 hours (the record is currently 2 hours 46 minutes and 3 seconds!) There'll be a home-cooked dinner ready for you when you return at the end of the day. On Sunday after a more relaxed start and enjoying breakfast together we'll be free to relax a bit more or we might decide to get out and explore more of the area before heading home. ACCOMMODATION Included in the price is two night's accommodation in a converted school house in Chapel-le- Dale; right on the Yorkshire Three Peaks route. Located at the foot of Ingleborough and Whernside, with superb views of both, the accommodation comprises lounge, dining room/kitchen, drying room and five bedrooms fitted with bunk beds. There are four shower rooms with hand basins and toilets. There are three bunks in each bedroom sleeping 6 people, and each bed comes with a mattress and a pillow with a pillow cover and sheet. Please note that no blankets are provided so you'll need to bring your own sleeping bag or blanket, as well as a towel. Explorers Connect Ltd, Pithay Studios, All Saints Street, Bristol BS1 2LZ Company Number: 7598165 Explorers Connect www.explorersconnect.com www.facebook.com/ExplorersConnect #AdventureRevolution www.twitter.com/explorerstweet HOW TO GET THERE Address: The Old School Bunkhouse, Chapel-Le-Dale, Ingleton, North Yorkshire, LA6 3AR. You can arrive any time after 7pm on Friday evening where your host Alex will be waiting for you. Please also consult a map before you begin your journey as sat nav devices can be unreliable. Driving directions: 4.5 miles on the B6255 Ingleton to Hawes Road, just after Chapel-Le- Dale village on the left-hand side. It is 11 miles from Hawes on the B6255. Parking: There is free parking on-site for around 12 cars, but as we won’t be using the cars all weekend you can block each other in. Public Transport: The nearest train station is Ribblehead (1 mile away). There are no buses that take you to the door so you’ll need to arrange a taxi from the station. Lift Sharing: If you can offer or need a lift (or just want to say “hi” to fellow attendees), then you can do this on the event Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/events/359718684465502/ Closer to the time if you have not found a lift share let us know where you will be coming from and we will give out your details to others in the group by email. If you have any issues on Friday night please call your host Alex on 07852 107455. There is also a payphone number in the accommodation so if you can’t get through on the mobile please call the payphone on 01524 241021. KIT LIST You can download our recommended hiking kit list HERE. Please make sure you bring the right footwear as it's a very long day out on Saturday, and you'll need to bring your lunch, enough snacks and water to keep you going all day too. FOOD When you arrive on Friday night, we’ll be having a buffet dinner and some drinks at our accommodation, so we’d ask that you please bring a dish to share with the group. There will be some wine and beer provided but do also feel free to bring your own drinks too. Your EC host Alex will provide a hearty hot breakfast for you on Saturday morning to start your big day and a lighter breakfast on Sunday, as well as a home-cooked dinner on Saturday night. Please bring your own packed lunches for the weekend and enough snacks to keep your energy up (there will be a fridge at the accommodation for you to store your food). • The Yorkshire Three Peaks Itinerary - Outline for Bespoke Trips
THE YORKSHIRE THREE PEAKS ITINERARY - OUTLINE FOR BESPOKE TRIPS Located roughly in the centre of Northern England is a beautiful area of valleys and hills. These hills are fairly rugged, with steep sides, exposed cliff edges and several peaks over 600m. Added to the natural beauty of this national park are age-old human influences, with remains of ancient settlements, scenic farms and villages, field-barns and classic limestone walls. We take the challenge of climbing 3 of these peaks, covering 24 miles in one day. DAY 1 ARRIVE YORKSHIRE We all meet at our accommodation, have a welcome meal in a local pub and a briefing about the day ahead. DAY 2 THE CHALLENGE! 8-10 HRS TREKKING We start with an early breakfast before making our way to the trailhead. From Horton-in- Ribblesdale we head towards our first peak of Pen-y-ghent (691m), trekking through valley’s, crossing streams and farmland, and finally taking the path that winds it’s way up to the summit. Back in the valley of fields and farmland we stop for a break, before the approach of the second peak, Whernside. Following the great Settle to Carlisle railway line and viaduct, we progress to the dizzy height of 728m and our second summit. From here it is a steep descent to our final target through boggy sections, across steps of board and stone to help our crossing. Our climb up to the pathless Ingleborough summit plateau (723m) brings us to the final summit. We can now descend back down into the valley and heading home to Horton, where we eat heartily, drink a little and sleep extremely well.

South Ribble Fell Search & Rescue Team 1962 - 1980 Introduction 1 The Beginning 2 Team Leaders 3 Callouts by Year 4 Amalgamation 5 Cop Lane 6 Vehicles 7 Film Callout Callout 8 Team Kit 9 The “Bomb” 10 Fell Races 11 Reunion Note £ figures in brackets are the approximate relative value in 2020 Introduction On 25th March 1962 in the fells north of Chipping 3 siblings set out on a day’s walk which was to end in tragedy with the two brothers losing their lives despite their sister raising the alarm. Mountain Rescue in England was in its formative years, there was no team for miles and no routines or protocols for calling one in to help. I believe this incident provided the final push for two teams to be formed in the county. Jim McVeigh and Peter Williams gathered together a number of people to form South Ribble Fell Search and Rescue Team, based at Cop Lane in Penwortham, Preston. The team remained at this location for most of their existence. In contrast, Ross Drysdale believed there was a need for a wider co-ordinating role, an umbrella agency, with contacts and units across Lancashire, Yorkshire and beyond, able to call upon others with specific skills; Raynet with radio communications, North West Fell and Mountaineering First Aid Unit etc, and deploy them as each incident dictates. The name of this new group reflected his aspiration, Northern Rescue Organisation (NRO) with Ross as its organiser. Attempts were made as early as 1973 to form closer ties between the two teams but these did not develop.

  • Yorkshire Weekender
The Dales Way Association. PO Box 1065, Bradford, BD1 9JY. [email protected] www.dalesway.org.uk Newsletter Number 40 Autumn 2011 Editorial It has always been one of the aims of the Dales Way Association to eliminate road-walking as far as possible from the route of the Dales Way. One short section of minor, but busy road has exercised our minds for many years, the stretch from Sprint Bridge to Hall Lane, which leads into Burneside. The obvious solution would be a footpath over the wall on the south side of the road and parallel to it. In 2006 an attempt was made to create such a footpath, but nothing came of it. In 2010 Cumbria County Council started another initiative, but again, fifteen months later, no progress had been made. In August of this year the Association requested the help of Chris Holland, South Lakeland District Councillor. He responded within 48 hours and progress since then has been rapid. The land is owned by the Cropper Estate (Croppers also own the paper mill in Burneside). Chris has already had a meeting with Mr Cropper, who is sympathetic to our request, but he has not yet spoken to the tenant farmer at Burneside Hall, whose agreement would also be necessary. Chris and committee member Donald Holland have walked the proposed path in order to assess the cost of the gates and stiles required. The Dales Way Association has agreed to contribute to these costs and we thank Chris for his help and enthusiasm in moving to solve a 40 year old problem.
