SUBJECT: Approval of Instructional Consultant Services

Background:

The purpose of the Instructional Consultant Services is to enrich student learning. Consultants are selected based on their qualifications regarding specific subject areas. When a consultant is selected, the consultant, company/organization must complete the required paperwork by the District to ensure that District students receive the services they require. All consultant requests must be approved by the Board of Education prior to services being rendered

Discussion/Issues:

Sites submit the required paperwork to Instructional Services. Work must not begin until the site receives a confirmation of Board approval from Instructional Services. If the Consultant assignment requires unsupervised contact with student(s) during the contract period, the Consultant will be required to provide Department of Justice fingerprint clearance through the District’s Human Resources Services.

Fiscal Impact:

There is no fiscal impact.

Recommendation:

Tom Kissinger, Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services, recommends that the Board of Education approve the instructional consultant services for the purpose of on-site student learning support and staff development, and that authority to sign the agreements be exercised pursuant to BUSD—AR 3314, as presented. With the use of models and student-involved demonstrations, students will have a front row seat to space exploration and robotics. Providencia Striking Story Pirates will provide two assemblies for the students at 11/20/18 Not to exceed 010-90201.0-11100-10000-5810-2138200 Viking Story Providencia. The students will learn how to be more $1650 (Providencia Gift Account) Pirates, LLC expressive with their words as they write a non-fiction story. The students story will be turned into a musical sketch, and performed by the cast of Story Pirates. Muir Top Youth Top Youth Speakers will provide an assembly to students at 3/29/19 Not to exceed 010-90904.0-11100-10000-5850-3228100 Speakers Muir on “My Life Online”. This presentation will provide $2,500 (Muir ASB Funds) the students with guidance, and mentorship on the use of the internet and empower them with a clear set of values, principals, and social skills to guide their lives online. Jefferson History Joe Greene founded History Brought to Life over 17 years 3/5/19 Not to exceed 010-90201.0-11100-10000-5810-2068000 Brought to ago. Mr. Greene is an expert on US History. At Jefferson, through $775 (Jefferson Gift Account) 3/15/19 Life all 4th grade students will be provided with an assembly designed to give students an in-depth understanding of specific events and people who are responsible for shaping California’s history. This two-part presentation will focus on California Missions and the Gold Rush of 1849 Jordan Enrichment Enrichment Works provides performances and assemblies 3/8/19 Not to exceed 010-90201.0-11100-10000-5850-3218200 Works that bring to life the curriculum for students in a fun and $400 (Jordan Gift Account) challenging way. The 6th graders at Jordan will experience the re-enact the Voyage of Odysseus during their Greek Day event.

Bob Redman

Bio:

Bob Redman's interest in aerospace was sparked by his father's 30 year career at NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center located at in California. While working as a tour guide at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C, Bob began to see the educational possibilities of teaching young people about the history of space and science. As co-emcee for the Aerospace Walk of Honor ceremony in Lancaster, California he met such notable aerospace figures as and .

In addition, Bob created the "Air & Space Expo", a non-profit event bringing aerospace entities such as NASA, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the United States Air Force, Boeing and Northrop­ Grumman together to participate side-by-side with area schools and students. Captain Bob's Rockets and Robots is a distillation of all of these efforts and experiences. Presented to over 250,000 students, these STEM assemblies are presented with the goal of instilling the fun of science into tomorrow's pioneers ... our children.

Servicesprovided:

Aerospace education specialist, Bob Redman, brings the high-tech world of space exploration down to earth. These STEM presentations use models and student-involved demonstrations to excite and inspire children to study science and math.

These are nationwide programs designed to promote science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics - in an interdisciplinary and applied approach, integrating them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications.
