The unique position of the Māori culture

Turua School will endeavour to develop an awareness of Tikanga Māori and Te Reo Māori and provide the means of fostering cultural understanding consistent with the Treaty of Waitangi.

What reasonable steps will the school take to incorporate Te Reo and Tikanga Māori into the school’s curriculum?

Classroom activities and school events will reflect Māori culture through signage, waiata, greetings, stick games, commands, and language related to everyday objects, days, dates, numeration and kapa haka.

School wide Te Reo and tikanga programmes, using ‘Ka Mau te Wehi’.

We will endeavour to include components of Tikanga Māori as appropriate to the topic and the class level.
