Acquisition Information Lent for microfilming in 1986 by Thomas Dunlay, who purchased them in 1985 from dealer George Epstein. Epstein bought the drawings from Hale's daughter, Nancy Hale Bowers, in the 1960's. Location of Originals Originals returned to Thomas Dunlay after microfilming. Related Materials Philip Leslie Hale papers; Also located at; Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. Available Formats 35mm microfilm reel 3766 available at Archives of American Art offices and through interlibrary loan. Restrictions The Archives of American art does not own the original papers. Use is limited to the microfilm copy.
Biographical / Historical
Painter, teacher, critic, and writer; Boston, Mass. Hale received early training under his sister Ellen Day Hale, at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and Academy Julian in Paris, and he studied privately with William M. Chase, J. A. Weir, and Kenyon Cox. Taught at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston for thirty years; at various times, he also was on the faculty of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Boston University. He is the son of Reverend Edward Everett Hale.
