CHAMBERS WHARF LAUNCH OF OUR TUNNEL BORING MACHINE

Our tunnel boring machine (TBM) Selina arrived onsite at Chambers Wharf in July. The TBM is named after Selina Fox (1871 –1958), a pioneering doctor who founded the Bermondsey Medical Mission for poor and disadvantage residents in Bermondsey.

We have been preparing Selina to start tunnelling, which is due to start within the next few weeks. Selina will construct the 5.5km eastern section of the main tunnel between Chambers Wharf and Abbey Mills, the final stretch of the Thames Tideway Tunnel.

Selina will be working 24 hours a day, 5 days a week, from her launch until she reaches our Abbey Mills site near Stratford. We expect her to complete her journey in Spring 2022.

The slurry treatment plant (STP) will run continuously to support tunnelling activities.

The material excavated during tunnelling, a chalk slurry, will be processed by the STP before being temporarily stored on site. It will then be removed from site by barge. During tunnelling we will have up to 3 barges per day. Each barge will avoid approximately 40 lorries needing to come to Chambers Wharf. Arrival and departure time of barges will depend upon the , but no vessels will be loaded between 10pm and 8am.
