Foothills Spring Banquet was held on Friday, April 13th at Banchetti’s. Dinner was delicious and the socializing was even better. The most important piece of business at the banquet was to elect the 2018-19 officers. The nominations committee presented their slate of officers and those in attendance voted to accept the recommendation of the committee.

We have a new president……..well actually we have two. Sally Hardenburg and Claudia Lawler will lead the Foothills Trail Club in 2018-19 as Co-Presidents. Our new one-year directors are Barbara Arber and Brock Carmichael. All other positions remain the same. Congratulations to all of the 2018-19 officers. The full list of officers, with contact information, is found on page 1 of this TALES.

Huge thank you to our outgoing officers — Donna Flood, Lori Chiarelli, and Sally Hardenburg.

THANK YOU DONNA FLOOD

Thank you Donna for all the time and effort you have given over the past several years to the Club. You have worked to maintain its mission and promote its promise. Hopefully, you will continue to help the efforts of the Club and its members in educating the public, maintaining the trails and promoting conservation efforts. ~~ Sally

YEAR-END APPEAL PRESENT TO THE FLTC

In late 2017, Quinn sent out the end-of-year appeal letter. One of our landowners, Donald VanSile who lives in Horseheads, NY, returned a handwritten note to the FLTC office. It said:

Dear Sir, I am a 92 year old Vet of WWII with 5 bronze battle stars on my ribbons and living at Appleridge Senior Living, that costs me more than my income is. So I don't have a donation to send you. I might consider a permanent easement across my land. Sincerely Donald VanSile

As David Newman from FLTC says………One of the keys to this Trail Preservation initiative is we need to move when the opportunity presents itself, and our volunteers sprang into action upon hearing this news. After the legwork was completed, the parcel trail maintainer, Paul Good, arranged to go visit Mr VanSile, paperwork in hand. Paul had a great talk with Mr VanSile. Paul eft with Mr. VanSile's promise that he'd get the paperwork signed with the notary and mail it (in the stamped envelope we had provided). And to everyone’s delight, the paperwork did indeed come back to us…..signed, notarized, all in order for our Board to accept and file.

Paul Good met Donald VanSile a few years ago after he agreed to allow the Finger Lakes Trail to cross his property. At that time Mr. VanSile wanted to defer an easement to his heirs. Fast forward a few years, he decided to protect the trail forever for others to enjoy. Paul reports that Mr. VanSile is a decorated World War 2 veteran, retired pipefitter, and has traveled across country with his fifth wheel camper multiple times. The property was his father’s and four generations have hunted the area. He used his woodworking skills to make furniture from logs that he harvested from the land. Mr. VanSile, now 92 years young still drives his own car and lives in a senior housing community.

The actual parcel is Schuyler County, Town of Orange Parcel 81.00-1-21 on Switzer Hill Road just SW of Sugar Hill, and his northern boundary is State Forest land.

Huge KUDOS to Mr. VanSile for recognizing the importance of protecting and preserving the trail and taking the necessary steps to make sure that the trail remains intact.

Help Wanted - TALES Editor

After 4 years serving as the TALES editor, I am stepping away from these duties. Its been a pleasure to assist the Club over these many years and I hope you’ve enjoyed reading the TALES as much as I’ve enjoyed preparing it.

TALES is published 6 times a year and the duties of the TALES editor are pretty straightforward………….

• Attend the bimonthly Board meetings; these Board meetings nicely coincide with the TALES publishing schedule. • Collect articles of interest from the Board and general membership for inclusion as space and time allows. • Follow established schedule for inclusion of some specific items. • Develop other content. • Email the TALES to the printer; the printer will then work with the Circulation Manager for pick up and distribution. • Email the TALES to the Club’s Webmaster so that it is added to the Foothills website.

Please contact Claudia or Sally if you are interested in becoming the next TALES editor. And if you have any questions about the work and/or the process, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I would be happy to talk with you.

Hiker’s Corner ➢ INSURANCE NOTE: Attention members: Foothills Trail Club carries liability insurance to financially protect all of us in case a participant in a Foothills activity is injured. As a condition of our insurance coverage, every participant in an activity needs to sign the liability waiver before the activity begins. So please make sure you sign the form!

➢ Hike Leaders and Hikers: Before you commit to lead a club hike or plan a personal hike, check the trail conditions to ensure that the trail is open. This information can be found on the FLT website: www.fingerlakestrail.org. Click on “TRAIL CONDITIONS” and select the map # for your intended hike. Map numbers that appear in ORANGE have trails closures for hunting. Trail conditions are outlined for all the other maps #’s.

➢ HIKER RESPONSIBILITY: We remind you that you, and only you, are responsible for your own actions. Come to our events prepared. Do not participate if the event may present a hazard for which you or your party members are not prepared. If weather is questionable or if you have questions, please call the named hike coordinator; the hike may be canceled. When participating, please respect the coordinator and do not break away from the group without telling them. We suggest you always keep your eye on someone in front of you, and behind you if you are in the lead. Please remember that hike leaders are not guides; they are volunteers, willing to share their knowledge and experience with you. Please give them your cooperation and respect. The leader has the right to refuse anyone who is not prepared for the outing. In addition, if the hike leader does arrange carpooling, passengers are expected to contribute toward the cost of transportation. Finally, since there are RISKS INVOLVED in hiking everyone participating does so at his or her own risk.
