Program Description: The North Central Texas Safe Room Rebate Program offers north central Texas residents living or developing in one of the sixteen counties in the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) region an opportunity to qualify to receive half the cost of construction for an individual safe room, up to $3,000. The Safe Room Rebates are funded with FEMA supplied mitigation grants and will be managed by NCTCOG. In order to qualify, the applicant must own their home and Rebate Compliant cannot be living or developing in a local or FEMA 100 year designated floodplain (FEMA Flood Zone A) or listed in the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA).

Therefore, as part of the program, participants must complete the Floodplain Verification Form found on the NCTSRRP website and have it signed by their jurisdiction’s contact person or their designated official. The contact information for these officials will be shared with applicants when they are accepted into the program. How to apply: We are not accepting applications at this time. However, the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) has opened an online waitlist for the program. This waitlist is open to all jurisdictions in the NCTCOG region and will not close. You can sign up for the waitlist at: https://saferoom.nctcog.org/applicant.aspx. Residents who do not have Internet access can request a paper waitlist application through their local Emergency Management Office.

Once approved, the applicant must:

Obtain a building permit (if applicable in their jurisdiction). Contract with a National Storm Shelter Association (NSSA) or American Tornado Shelter Association (ATSA) certified supplier. Submit all required documentation by program deadlines. Share their Taxpayer Identification Number (Social Security number) with NCTCOG for use in internal financial processing procedures. What keeps your safe room from blowing away? TEXAS BUILT!

Lone Star Safe Rooms use a Simpson Strong-Tie Wedge-All anchoring system to secure the safe room during an F5 tornado. Each safe room is bolted down to TEXAS PROUD! your concrete slab by drilling 5/8” x 3 ½” holes and inserting specialty designed anchoring bolts at the appropriate locations around the perimeter of the safe room to ensure the safe room stays in place as the rest of the house is torn away from the slab.

How can I breathe?

Lone Star Safe Rooms meet and exceed FEMA requirements regarding ventilation. With our top and bottom door ventilation design, our doors allow safe and secure ventilation.

What size of safe room should I buy?

FEMA reccomends that you take the number of people you want to protect and multiply that number by 3 feet for standing or 6 feet for sitting. This will give you the square footage recommended to protect your family and pets.
