PASTORAL STAFF "God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every Reverend Edward J. Quinlan name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and Pastor on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2: 9 - 11) Reverend Matthew E. Cannon Parochial Vicar THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY & JOSEPH Today we celebrate the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. As we do so, our Gospel invites us to consider Joseph's protection of Jesus in the face of Deacon Joseph J. Wrabel danger. Just as in the announcement of Jesus' birth, an angel appears to Joseph Permanent Deacon in a dream. The angel warns him of Herod's plans to harm Jesus. Joseph follows the command of the angel and takes Joseph and Mary to Egypt, returning only Deacon Jerome T. Foerster after receiving word in another dream that it was safe to do so. Permanent Deacon This feast is part of the Christmas season, so we should look at today's Gospel in the context of what Scripture tells us about Jesus' birth. Today's reading MASSES is found in the Gospel of Matthew, following the story of the visit of the Magi. Weekends: Recall that Matthew's story about the birth of Jesus makes Joseph the primary Saturday Vigil5:00 p.m. character. Among Matthew's themes in this infancy narrative is Jesus as the Sunday8:00 a.m., 10:15 a.m., fulfillment of the prophecies about the messiah. Indeed, the story of the Holy Family's flight to Egypt recalls the story of Moses in the Book of 12:00 noon, 6:00 p.m. Exodus. Weekdays: It should also be noted that today's reading omits the verses that recount (Weekday schedule subject to Herod's order of the massacre of the infant boys in and around Bethlehem. We change - please see inside bulletin) mark this event on the Feast of the Holy Innocents on December 28. Mon-Thu.6:30 a.m., 8:00 a.m. These events remind us of the difficult reality of Jesus' birth. While the Friday..6:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m. story of the Magi's visit will be recalled in our liturgy on the Feast of the Epiphany, Saturday8:30 a.m. our Christmas celebration is made more sober by the recollection that not everyone received Christ's birth with joy or obedience. Herod's jealousy and CONFESSIONS malice contrast with Joseph's obedience to the words of the angel. The Holy Saturday9:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. Family's escape to Egypt and the massacre that Jesus is saved from remind us of 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. the struggles and sacrifices that are required as preparation for God's salvation. - Excerpted from Sunday Connection, Loyola Press Visit us on the web at www.HolyNameOfJesus.com/Parish The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph December 29, 2019

You can make a Tax Dorothy Byers, Ann Campbell, Dwayne Campbell, Lily Deductible donation to our Capital Campaign using a Carney, Patricia Cartwright, Michelle Christman, Lisa strategy called “Bundling”. Under the new tax law, Christy, Ashley Clover, Jim Clover, Marie Clover, Kristy people are finding it increasingly more difficult to itemize Constabile, Deacon Lawrence Crudup, Nick D’Amico, and therefore deduct gifts they make to charitable Teresa Davis, Leona Deibert, José Delerme, Jason Derk, organizations. With the large increase in Standard Caroline DiSanto, Julie Dowhouser, Noel Dzurchko, Deductions (individuals - $12,200 and families - $24,400), Patricia Eagle, Bob Enterline, Joanne Ferguson, Tom Fick, most people are not itemizing deductions on their federal Paula Fogarty, Roger Fornstrom Sr., Pamela Fresco, tax returns. New limits have been placed on the Bernard Gasper, Betty Giovanniello, John Grab, Angela deductibility of our state and local taxes as well. As a Purcell Graver, Emily Green, Rose Griffin, Stephanie result, modest donors typically don’t exceed the standard Griffith, Maribeth Gutshall, Diane Haggerty, Peter deduction to itemize their charitable gifts on their tax filing. Hammes, Donna Hannick, Ben Hardy, Hugh Hegarty, Bundling your charitable giving into a single tax Grant Hodgson, Reagan Hollister, Tommy Holtzman, year can help you exceed these limits and make a portion Charles Hopkins, Eric Huston, Jean James, John James, of your gift tax deductible in the year in which you bundle John Kambic, Noelle Karnash, Jen Karpency, Lori Keener, your charitable gifts. A family that gifts $10,000 annually Patty Kelley, Angeline Kenney, Mary Kepler, Frank might be better to combine two years of their giving into Kessler, George Klemick, Jerry Kolman, Frank Konschnik, one calendar year. As an example, by deferring their gift to Lisa Koup, Laurie Krammes, Collin Kratzer, Logan Kraus, the next calendar year, their total gift for the second year Paul Lance, Al Lane, James LaVia, Rose LaVia, Priscilla is now $20,000 and a portion of it will likely be tax Liebner, Terry Lingrel, Deb Loew, Marianne Loney, Robert deductible. Even the most generous donors will find Markowski, Stephen Marquis, Kelly Masi, Rosemary “Bundling” as a tax efficient strategy. McClure, Barry McKeel, Mike McKenna, Makenzie As we all should agree, receiving a reduction to Mehalick, Bernard Mihalik, Richard Miller, Robert Miller, Eli your taxes is nice, but it is the spirit of giving to our church Minnich, Gina Mischianti, Catherine Molter, Dianne Moran, and other charities that defines us. It is not the size of the William Moultane, John Nardis, Linda Norton, Theresa gift you give to our Capital Campaign but rather the fact Notarnicola, Bill O’Connell, Lilian O’Connell, Mary Oman, that we are working together toward a common goal.
