The Goa College of Music was founded by Kala Academy for Goa in 1987. The College was lateron taken over by the in 1994 and placed under the control of Directorate of Higher Education. The College is funded by the Government and affiliated to . The College is conducting following courses in Hindustani Music 1) Foundation Course 2) Bachelor of Performing Arts 3) Master of Performing Arts

Aims and objective of the Courses :

The basic aim of the Courses is to impart a full time professional training in Hindustani Classical Vocal music and Instrumental Music such as , Sitar and Harmonium. leading to the Degree of Bachelor of Performing Arts and Master of Performing Arts. It is aimed at providing a specialized training to the Music students in all important aspects of Hindustani Music, with a special emphasis on developing his/her performing ability to professional standard in the respective subject.

Nature of the Courses:

The nature of Music education is mainly practical oriented and hence more weightage is given to the performance part in the subject. The Course curriculam includes providing practical training in Major and subsidiary subjects of Music and Theory lectures on applied and General Music Theory. It also includes languages English and Hindi for the Foundation Course and first year of Bachelor of Performing Arts Degree Course. The students are exposed to various live concerts, as also recorded concerts and performances recorded in commercial audio/video cassettes and C.D.’s. Besides, the lecture-demonstrations and workshops by the expert Musicians and reputed artists are organised for the benefit of the students.

Admission and Eligibility :

A) FOUNDATION COURSE

1. Students who have passed S.S.C. or above and having Musical background will be admitted to the Ist Year of the foundation Course, only on passing the entrance test with 40% marks, conducted by the College.

B) BACHELOR OF PERFORMING ARTS

1. Students passing Foundation Course in Music of Goa University or the students passing H.S.S.C. Examination i.e. 10+2 with music in +2 or the students passing H.S.S.C. Examination and having passed in Diploma Sangeet Madhyama or higher examination or equivalent will be eligible for admission to First Year of Bachelor of Performing Arts Degree Course, only on passing the entrence test with 40% marks, conducted by the College.

C) MASTER OF PERFORMING ARTS

1. Students passing the Degree Course of Bachelor of Performing Arts with 50% and above marks will be eligible for admission to the Post Graduate Degree of Master of Performing Art, on passing the enterance test with 50% marks, conducted by the College.

2. The graduate passing B.A. (Hons) in Music or B. Mus.(Hons) or B.Music with 50% and above marks and graduates in other academic subject having passed Diploma Sangeet Visharad of Akhil Bhartiya Gandharv Mahavidyalaya Mandal or its equivalent diploma of recognised institution with 50% and above marks will be eligible for admission to M.P.A. on passing a Bridge Course with 50% and above marks in respective subject conducted by the Goa University. Such candidates will be admitted to M.P.A. only on passing the entrance test with 50% marks, conducted by the College.

The total number of seats for admission to the various courses, subjectwise are as under:

It is required to have minimum 5 students to start a class in each subject of Foundation Course. Similarly for B.P.A. Degree Course, it is required to have Minimum 5 students for a class in Vocal and 3 students for a class in each subject of instrumental Music. Besides for Master of Performing Arts, it is required to have minimum 3 students for a class in each subject.

Parent Institution :

The Goa College of Music has an Advisory Committee under the Chairmanship of the Director of Higher Education. The College has a Board of Studies constituted by the Goa University. It is chaired by the Principal of the College and reports to the Academic Council of the Universty whose decisions are in turn endorsed by the Executive Council. Both the latter are chaired by the Vice- Chancellor.

Diploma Course :

Apart from Degree Courses, the College is conducting it’s own part time Diploma Courses in Vocal, Tabla, Sitar and Harmonium in Indian for the general students. The Diploma Courses are Sangeet Parichaya and Sangeet Madhyama, both of 2 years duration.

College is opened on all working days i.e. Monday to Saturday as follows :

Monday to Friday-9.45 a.m. to 4.15 p.m. with 75 minutes lunch break between 1.15 p.m.

Saturday-9.45 a.m. to 12.45 p.m.

Office and Library Hours :

Monday to Friday from 9.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. with 45 minutes lunch break between 1.30 p.m. to 2.15 p.m.

Saturday – 9.30 a.m. to 12.45 p.m.(excluding vacation period)

Hostel:

Our hostel accommodation is scattered in two flats in the town of i.e. one at Altinho for boys and other at St.Inez for girls.

We have one Vehicle i.e. Maruti Van.

Photocopier Machine and Computer & Fax Machine :

We have a Photocopying Machine for the purpose of administrative and academic use. The College has also a Computer and Fax Machine for the office use.
