Steers to £1335 Heifers to £1220

Friday saw an incredible trade for all ages, breeds and types with only the bravest of buyers (away and local) going home with full lorries. Best forward steers rose to a top of £1335 for another quality Simmental steer (22m) from Robert & Janet Legg of Dunchideock whilst a couple of slightly older sorts (25m) off the same excellent conveyer belt reached £1295 apiece. Graham Tancock, Broadclyst also saw £1295 for his best, a South Devon steer (27m) as did Andy & Olly Reed of Blackborough with a top notch Limousin steer (22m), the latter also attained £1075 a head for a lovely bunch of Limousin heifers averaging 20 months of age. Other forward type bullocks of note included an eye catching Charolais (24m) from the Keast family of at £1270 whilst bunches of South Devon sorts all around the 22 month mark sold between £1220 and £1250 for Terry Gostling, Hittisleigh, Alan Ridgway of Ipplepen and Rundle Weldhen up from Newquay. Younger South Devon steers also rose to £1220 for Dave & Karen Smith of Littlehempston. Eighteen month old steers from Rob & Elizabeth Buxton of Talaton sold well and to £1005 for a pen of three well turned out Limousin steers with a group of five heifers of the same breed and of a similar age and also fetching £1005 apiece. Yearling Charolais bullocks from first time seller, Joe Richardson of Sherford also looked a good price at £980 for a pen of four with mixed groups of South Devon and Simmental cross steers (10m) again from Rundle Weldhen reaching a decent £860. Friesian steers (26m) from Gordon Keep of Moreton ran to £1000 followed by pens of well covered sorts from Martin Gillbard at £915 (25m) and £905 (22m) for Tony West of South Zeal. A trio of superb Limousin’s (24m) topped the heifer section at a noteworthy £1220 a head for Brian Vallance of Bickington whilst a pair with alike comments were knocked down for £1180 apiece for Leo Bradford and family of Iddesleigh. Blue heifers (29m) rose to £1110 for Gordon Keep, a price also attained for three well fleshed Limousin cross females (24m) from James & Naomi Law of Broadhempston. South Devon females (24m) ran to £1100 for David & Mary Stark of Denbury with cracking sorts of that breed hitting £1090 for Rundle Weldhen. Young heifers from MH & SRS Eggins of Roborough, looked dear with a pair of Charolais (11m) running to £790.

A good yarding of stirks and suckled calves met another rip roaring trade here at Exeter. Top price steers came from the Bellamy family of Peter Tavy realising £920 for a smashing Blue (10m), further Blues steers attained £830 (9m) and £800, whilst a pen of strong Angus (9m) from the same vendor made £780. South Devon steers (12m) from RJ Merchant of hit £830 with Angus from the same home (13m) to £745. Further Blue steers this time from Pat Lee of Rackenford (10m) realised £810, Simmentals (7m) from DR Stacey of St Austell realised £775, with Blues of the same age a little less attaining £725. Michael Vooght of Hennock hit £775 for Charolais (9m). Aberdeen Angus from Dave & Michelle Wotton of reached £770, Maureen Crispin of Ideford saw her Lim crosses (11m) attain £760, South Devon steers of the same age from Miles and Helen Partridge of Poundsgate realised £755, whilst a wonderful show of Saler’s from Romford Mill Farms down from Verwood, Dorset saw the best top at £750. In the heifers section DR Stacey saw his Charolais crosses (14m) attain £840, the Bellamy family achieved £790 for (9m) old Blues with others of a similar age reaching £770 and £750 on a further three occasions. Miles and Helen Partridge saw South Devon heifers sell to £760 with others a little less at £730. Leo Bradford & family of Iddesleigh saw Lim crosses reach £755, Steve Arrowsmith-Brown of Postbridge saw South Devon heifers (12m) reach £700, whilst similar sorts but a little younger hit £685 for Acorn Farms of North Tawton. Another good days trading in the cattle pens more will be required next week.

CALVES - 10.15 am Top of the day was £418 for a British Blue bull from CALVES Bulls Heifers Messrs CD & EM Gooding of with others to £385 for Chris & Connie Creeper of Breed TOP AVE TOP AVE , £365, £350 & £342 for Phillip & Caroline British Blue 10 418 334 5 310 288 Cox of Lifton and £340 for Messrs Lawrence & Tapp Limousin 2 408 346 5 355 246 of Awliscombe. Limousin bulls sold to £408 from Messrs KH Alsopp Partners of Cadeleigh. Native Hereford 6 295 195 6 220 164 calves sold well to a top of £295 for a young Hereford Aberdeen Angus 13 268 195 15 225 149 bull from Nigel & Brenda Tucker of Tiverton with Holstein / Friesian 26 120 56 others to £280 for Torcountry Ltd of Bovey Tracey. Only young Angus calves forward which sold well to Brown Swiss 2 165 162 £268 & £252 for James & Jeanette Pyne of East Budleigh. Heifers sold well to a top of £355 for a super Limousin heifer from Messrs KH Alsopp Partners with other Limousins to £275 for Messrs F & H Farms of Tiverton. British Blue heifers topped at £310 & £305 for Messrs L & M Coles of Sidbury, £290 for Phillip & Caroline Cox & £285 for David Mortimer of Sowton. Brown Swiss bulls sold well to £165 & £160 for Mr FJ Luxmore of Lapford. Friesians sold to a decent trade with only young calves forward and the best sold to £120, £98 & £95 for Lynch Farms of Thorverton. Others to £102 for Diepenbroek Farms Ltd of Seaton.

A smaller entry of Sucklers for our monthly sale saw a cracking trade and many more outfits could have been sold to advantage especially for those plainer cows to graze as the grass is plentiful. Top of the day was £1800 for a Pedigree Charolais bull from Messrs KD Adams & Son of . Cows & Calves topped at £1550 for a smart Simmental Cow with her Heifer calf from John Vooght of Dunsford who sold a similar Cow at £1210. A consignment of Hereford Cows with Limousin calves at foot from Chris & Katy Steer of Modbury sold to a cracking trade to £1330, £1310, £1240 & £1120. Other Hereford x older cows sold well to £1240 (x2) for Claire Burrough of Yarcombe. Aberdeen Angus cows and calves to £1160 for Mr B Dymond of Awliscombe and £1120 for Messrs Romford Mill Farms of Dorset. Organic Highland cross cows to £920 for Mr N Batt of .

Another fantastic day in the pig section with two more new vendors selling this week and buyers present from as far afield as Essex, Portsmouth, Bristol and Penzance.

126 CULL SOWS & BOARS

Tremendous! The biggest entry ever seen at Exeter Market (Matford) with vendors travelling from as far afield as West Sussex to enjoy the benefits of a blistering trade. Top call of the day was an incredible £336 for the best of a line-up of forty-two from Chris Down of Budleigh with others from the same farm at £324, £280 and £275. David Green made the 230 mile round trip from Green Lane in West Sussex and was well rewarded, seeing his line-up topping at £300 with two more at £296, £288, £276 and £268. As always, Richard & Vicky Gibbins of Poltimore saw a superb trade for the large ’white’ sows with their best at £300 whilst in the very next pens Nigel & Sandra Tope of Blackawton reached £300 twice for their best. Richard Knox of Whiddon Down saw his line-up of ten at a top of £270 whilst a cracking run of ‘medium weight’ quality white sows stormed away to £258 (103p/kg) for Timmy & Rupert Stockwell of . Today top ten sows averaged a massive £307.30 with the top thirty averaging £279.68.

135 PRIME & STORE PIGS

A total of six buyers in total today saw both quality and quantity with the best of the ‘heavyweight’ to £156 for Richard Knox, £155 for Andrew Freemantle and £148 for Messrs Down whilst the standard weights hit a top of £128 for R & S Johns of Shebbear who sold a quality pen of ten (99kg) whilst Rich & Vicky Gibbins of Poltimore saw the best of their team of sixteen fly away to £128 (x8) for lighter white cutters (95-97kg) and £131 for their pen of heavier boar pigs at £131. An excellent entry of fourteen smart white pigs from Mr Rugg of Shute, Axminster caused much interest with their first pen of seven at £132 going to one butcher with others at £128 & £127 going to Dorset. The Turner family travelled down from Coombe Martin on the edge of with twelve standard weight ‘double-muscled white and coloured pigs’ were well rewarded topping at £125 (93kg) and £121 (92kg) with worthy mention to M Dallyn of who saw their young boars reach £107.

A slightly smaller entry of store pigs saw quality reach a premium with five week old white pigs from Messrs Selley of Ottery St Mary topping at £52 going to their new home near Penzance whilst Trevor Hampton of Cambourne, West Cornwall saw the best of his team of twenty ‘slip pigs’ sell away to a top call of £26.

88 ORPHAN LAMBS

Another good sized entry sold in front of a decent crowd of keen buyers with many leaving short of requirements. A tremendous week old monster of a Suffolk cross lamb topped the trade, reaching £32 for Milborne Wick Farms of Sherborne, whilst similar sorts sold to £31 & £22 (x7) for Howeton Farms of Exton, £24 (x4) for Michael Ayre of Thorverton and £24 (x3) for J Burrough & Co of Seaton to average £16.08 overall.

297 STORE HOGGS

The shortened entry of store hoggs sold to £74.50 for KJ & A Delve of Longdown, £73.50, £72 & £68 for Antony Barrow & Lora Feilding of Bickington, £69.50 for Twitchen Farm Partnership of Burrington & £69 for Keith Vincent of Grampound. Other medium keeps from £61 to £68 and best of a few pens of Scotch hoggs sold into the early £50’s for Farmer Luxton of . Smaller long keep hoggs becoming increasingly harder to place from £40 to £55. Overall average £56.21.

39 BREEDING & GRAZING EWES & RAMS

Breeders and grazers were in short supply with Dorset Shearling Rams selling to £115 (x3) & £98 for Luke Bulley of Ideford whilst a double pen of empty Suffolk cross ewe hoggs sold to £92 for Norman Chanin of Thorverton. No real strength within the grazers saw a Dorset ewe sell at £75.50 for Twitchen Farm Partnership and leaner ewes sold at £51.50 for RJ & JK Kingdom of Sampford Courtenay.

COUPLES ( 361 EWES & 545 LAMBS)

Another large entry of couples were an overall straight trade with quality still meet great demand whilst some third quality sorts were slightly less on the week. Young ewes with strong double lambs topped the sale at £216 for David & Adrian Cole of Bradninch who also had FM Dorset Mule doubles at £182 and a great Continental single at £162. Michael Vooght of Hennock sold his usual strong sorts to £212, £210 & £182 for the doubles and £150 for the singles as Mike Smith of Cullompton sold his best doubles to £180 closely followed by Mick Branton of Dunsford at £178. First of the seasons Mule Hoggs with lambs saw doubles from Peter Tucker of Cadeleigh reach £178 followed by Tony Pickard of with similar at £168 and Peter’s singles sold to £156 & £154. Averages were up to £132.80 an outfit or just over £55 per life.
