DOWNTOWN On a rainy Friday morning, Rachel Volman plays “La Bamba” on the piano at Silvercrest Senior Residence Center for her fellow residents. Every week, she attends a Spanish class in the community room that combines her love of music with her interest in languages. "When you get older, it's good to keep your mind productive, not to just stay home and watch TV … . Most of us are here because we want to learn,” said Volman, 74, who arrived early for the class despite a recent surgery. But it isn’t just her neighbors that she plays the piano for. In September, seniors in the Santa Monica High School special edu- cation transition program also began attending the classes. “Typically our students have significant Brandon Wise [email protected] disabilities, and this type of support is vital if IN SPANISH, PLEASE: Pablo DaRos (center) teaches Spanish vocabulary to seniors and mentally handicapped students from Santa Monica High School at the Silvercrest Senior Center on Fifth Street on Friday morning. DAISY NGUYEN Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES A freeway facelift has caused so much gridlock on one of the nation’s busiest highways that commuters are tweet- ing their complaints while driving. Or while stuck in traffic. The normally congested Interstate 405 is undergoing a $1 billion upgrade that is mak- ing a freeway already notorious for bottle- necks even worse. While officials promise long-term improvements, drivers are com- plaining of a three-year headache until the project is slated to finish in 2013. Since construction began earlier this year, traffic has gone “from horrible to horren- dous,” said Jack Johnson as he filled up at a gas station off the freeway. “I try to avoid it like a pest.” The freeway, known locally as the 405, connects the city’s west side to the San Fernando Valley through a canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains called the Sepulveda Pass.
