One month and a day after Always B Miki set the teletimer at Red Mile ablaze with the fastest mile in history, a serendipitous thing happened when his paternal granddam entered the sale ring at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, PA. Neverhaveneverwill, a 21-year-old barren grey mare, was the third last horse to sell on Nov. 10 at the Harrisburg Mixed Sale and interest in the old pacer was less than tepid despite the fact she had produced 13 foals that that earned

Even the fact Neverhaveneverwill is the dam of Always A Virgin, the sire of Always B Miki, didn?t move the interest needle much except for one man whose staff insisted he buy her. Always B Miki and Always A Virgin?s co-owner Mitchel Skolnick of Bluestone Farms of Hopewell, NJ laughingly said he was under so much duress from employees Kelly Detweiler and Emily Homan to buy Neverhaveneverwill that he bid on the mare twice before the gavel fell in his favor at $2,000. ?They are the two that got me in trouble,? Skolnick said, laughing. ?Kelly saw her first (in the catalog) and told me I had to buy her. When I ignored her, she enlisted Emily?s support? Kelly has been working here for seven years and knows me well. She knows I get distracted pretty easily.? When Skolnick was getting ready to leave the farm to drive to Harrisburg, Kelly told him, ?Don?t leave without me? and jumped in Skolnick?s car. She wasn?t about to see Neverhaveneverwill fall into the wrong hands. ?We?ll feed (Neverhaveneverwill), keep her vet shots up and make sure her feet are trimmed properly and she?ll live out the rest of her life here,? Skolnick said. The old grey mare already has a nickname at Bluestone. ?They call her Willy Mare,? Skolnick said. ?It?s because of Neverhaveneverwill.? Rescuing Always B Miki?s granddam would be enough of a happy yarn, but here is where the story gets really interesting: The exact same thing happened to

That mare, Keystone Wallis, was taken in by the woman that twice surgically repaired Always B Miki?s broken legs, putting him back on track, literally, to his 1:46 world record. ?When I found out it was Mitchel, I just couldn?t believe the irony there, that I had taken in the mother in 2009, because I was so touched by her story,? said Dr. Patty Hogan. ?Then to have her end up being the familial line of a horse that was just a tremendous veterinary case for me? is really remarkable.? Hogan said she didn?t realize until Skolnick bought Neverhaveneverwill that the mare was even related to Always B Miki or Keystone Wallis. ?I read about it in the Harrisburg News and I just couldn?t believe that someone would bring a mare down like that, at that age when barren, to sell at Harrisburg? She?s (now) a mare that is not very useful reproductively or economically and they can end up in a very bad place. That?s what happened with Wallis.? Sophia Pedigrees offers free NA USTA needs comprehensive stallion listings review The European pedigree research and analysis company Rob Key?s call for a new USTA is certainly a good place to Sophia Pedigrees is now offering free stallion listings for all renew an important conversation about what is next in North American stallion through its online stallion directory harness racing in this country. Some of what he suggests in available at www.sophiastallions.com. The stallion directory the big picture is easy to support. A comprehensive review of has unsurpassed features, offering text, multiple pictures, the vision, structure, and mission of the USTA ? if done right videos, pedigree, the ability to test mate with any horse ? could be a very productive endeavor. Figuratively speaking, (because of access to the full database of Sophia Pedigrees) let?s consider taking everything out of the operational shed, and also list of the stallion's best foals. Veterinary and/or inspecting it, repairing anything that needs attention, and conformation information can also be added if desired. then only putting the really important stuff back in a neat, For further information, please contact Marloes Harkema organized way. The first step would be to establish clear, by email [email protected], by phone +47 91 well-supported vision and mission statements for the USTA, 99 61 50 or through Facebook (Sophia Pedigrees) or Twitter and maybe the industry as a whole. (@SophiaPedigrees). Some of Rob?s suggestions about streamlining, diversifying, - Sophia Pedigrees and going outside for full-time leadership need additional inspection and clarification. But these ideas certainly represent a good place to grab ahold of harness racing and shake it to see if what comes out makes sense. Most of the things outlined in Rob?s letter is big-picture thinking. Yet, everybody knows that what we need is a self-sustaining sport that can exist if the slot machine money dries up. And it?s clear we want more money buying yearlings, more owners paying trainers and supplying competitive racehorses to racetracks, and more people betting more money. A new, improved image of harness horse racing as a clean, honest game with a high level of integrity would be very helpful. It seems to me one of the major reasons we are having so much trouble taking full advantage of the work Rob Key did Preach, brother K ey with social media and putting together a well-funded Just read Rob Key's "directive" on a new USTA (HRU ? As Rob points out, the ?every man for himself? Specifically: mentality might not be the best way to succeed. - Ineffectiveness of 60 myopic directors. - Jim Reynolds / Watseka, IL - USTA trying to do more than its basic charter ? record keeper for the breed ? without constituent support or Two more breakers funding. Re: Bob Heyden's "The Rich Go Broke on Hambletonian - Totally fragmented nature of racetrack managements. Yeah, I bet both of them! - Etc., etc. - Don Berman / Las Vegas Lastly, Rob's wonderful description of harness racing: "a nice sport." No O?Brien for O?Brien Reorganization of the sport and its controlling body is a must and now is the time.
