VERMONT ARTS COUNCIL

2 0 0 5 MESSAGEFROM THE CHAIRMAN

As mytenure as Chair of theVermont Arts Council comes to a close, I wouldlike to thankmy fellow trustees and the staff for their unflag- gingsupport during the past two years. lt hasbeen a privilegeand an honorfor meto haveplayed a leadershiprole, especially during the 40th Anniversaryyear - a yearof celebration,to be sure, but alsoa yearthat helped define our work for the coming decade.

In theyears to come,I seea vibrantArts Council continuing its mis- sion, building on the foundationwe haveso well established. I see moreartists bringing more enrichment to the livesof Vermonters.I seeeconomic growth nurtured by a vigorouscultural community. I seea greaterdiversity of fundingand support - fromartists who giveback to theircommunities, from cooperative projects with non-traditionalpartners, and from the citizensof Vermont, who continueto appreciateand support what we do to bringthe arts intotheir lives.

In lookingback through the eventsand circumstances of our 40th Anniversaryyear I amstruck by several important conclusions:

First, the Councilhas touched and beentouched by an enormous numberof wonderfuland creative people during the last 40 years. All of themare, and will continue to be,our treasured, extended family.

Second, the Councilrepresents something different to everyperson andorganization that comes to knowit. Forsome we area funding agency, for othersa technicalor professionaldevelopment resource. Formany we serve as the voice for the arts in Montpelierduring the legislativesession. However we maybe viewed, the Council'strue role, ultimately, is to makethe arts accessible to all people.

Finally, the Councilis greater than the sum of its parts. The Council is notjust itsstaff and its board, but it isthe members, the donors, the peoplewho participate in grantdecisions, who serve on review panelsand committees, who attend workshops, and who speak up on behalfof communityarts activities. lt isthe people in communities throughoutVermont whose commitment to makingart, sharing their knowledgeabout the arts,or simplyhelping us appreciatethe arts thatmakes our state this unique and special place we cherish.

Here'sto the next40 years!

Creatingan Anniversarycelebration that capturesthe 4O-yearimpact of the ArtsCouncil was full of delightfulchallenges! How does one honor the traditionsof the pastwhile embracing the constantlychanging nature of the present? How does one providea showcasefor what hasgone before while setting the stagefor what is to come? Our goals were many: to raise awarenessof the Council'swork; to reconnectto formerstaff, trustees, and members;to showcasethe Council'sconstituent artists and arts organizations; to establish a firm financial foundation.Above all else, our goal was to havefun.

Weare a stateagency. This means reports, planning, fiscal responsibility and morereports. But we'realso a not-for-profitorganization that needsvisibility among our statewide constituents. This meansparties, events, and exhibitions, We learned how to balancefiscal prudence with aflair for showmanship. We had to balancea lot of otherthings: our appearances around the state, the numberand type of eventswe showcased by discipline, the amount of timewe spent planning andfundraising, and the amountof time we spentexecuting those plans.

Thepeople and institutionsthat helpedare too numerousto thankto the degreethey each deserve.A few, however, deserve special mention: Ellen McCulloch-Lovell who graciously hostedour kick-offevent at MarlboroCollege in Octoberof 2OO4;John Zwick who shepherd- ed the Art of AchievementExhibition around the state;our honoraryCo-Chairs, Trey Anasta- sioand Governor Madeleine Kunin; and finallythose intrepid elderstatesmen and women of 40 yearspast whose vision and purposefulnessthen have enabled us to celebrateto this day: JudgeFranklin, Jr. and Pauline Billings, Governor Phil Hoff, and Arthur Williams. Bless you for yourforesight and yourenergy.

And a specialnote of thanksto the staff of the Arts Council.lt wastheir work and persistencethat pavedthe wayfor all of us. Qrr Mrc MargaretLampe Kannenstine VictoriaYoung

THANKYOUI On behalfof the boardand staff, we thank evervone who contributed to the VermontArts Council drrrinp the naslvear

Membersupport is at the heartof ourorganization. While funding from the NationalEndow- mentfor the Arts and the Stateof Vermontsupply the bulkof theCouncil's annual operating needs, private contributions provide vital fundrng for programsand services. Member contrrbu- tionssupport artists, arts organizations, schools, and communrty groups with grant and techni- calassistance programs, information services, and advocacy campaigns. More importantly, thesize and strength of ourmembership sends a powerfulsignal to policymakers that the artsmatter! This, in turn, helps the Arts Council leverage increased funding for the arts from publicand private sources.

Our40th Anniversaryprovided a numberof occasionsfor special gifts. In additionto es- tabltshingan endowmentfund, the Council received contributions in honorof severalaward recipients.Among these was Jane , Executive Director of theVermont Folklife Center andrecipient of theGovernor's Award for Excellencein theArts. At Jane'srequest, gifts rn her honorsupported community development projects around the state.

Contributionswere also made in conjunctionwith the newlycreated Lifetime Achievement Awardfor the Arts. Dunng our Anniversary year, citations were presented to twoof theVermont ArtsCouncil's founders, Governor Philip Hoff and Mrs. Pauline Brllings. Gifts in theirhonor weredesignated for the Council's ongoing efforts to provideeducational and accessible arts programsfor all Vermonters.

DearFriends:

Mycontribution to thisreport is to makesure that two people in particularget thanked andthat about a dozenothers receive the recognition due them.

Thetwo major thank yous are to our40th AnniversaryCo-Chairs, Margaret (Peggy; Kannenstine, and Victoria (Vicky) Young. They stepped up to theplate, pointed to the outfieldfence, and proceeded to delivera grandslam home run on everypromise they made.As a resultof theirefforts, the Council reconnected with dozens of formerstaff andtrustees as we celebrated 40 yearsof greatart-making by Vermonters in all disciplines. Theyalso helped us reach new audiences, make new friends, and put a spotlighton the vital contributionthe arts have made to Vermont'shistory and character. On behalf of all theold andnew members of theArts Council, and from the very bottom of myheart, thank you. We simplycouldn't have done it withoutyou.

Ouranniversary put a lotof additionalstress on peoplethat already had full-time jobs. Despitehaving grant applications to process, bills to pay, advocacy campaigns to run, fundraisingappeals to send,ArtMails to write, questions to answer, and foundation reports thatalways seemed to be dueat theworst possible time, the staffof theVermont Arts Councilserved as a mostcapable supporting cast-particularly during those times whenthe 40th Anniversarv celebrations took over our schedules!

Elaine,Michele, Janet, Lori, Lindsey, Andrea, Diane, Zig, John, Sara and Janice (the lasttwo of whomhave since moved on) -Thank You!You ARE the Arts Council and never more sothan during its 40th Anniversary.
