Her two sons Prince William and Prince Harry were very keen to mark these two occasions in some way, so they came up with the idea of a concert. They wanted a happy event to celebrate her life and a special concert in memory of their mother, featuring her favourite bands, seemed the right way to do it. The concert took place on 1st July at the brand new Wembley Stadium. 63,000 people turned up to see the six-hour show, which was broadcast to 140 countries around the world. 14.8 million people in the UK alone tuned in to watch the extravaganza. Elton John, who also played at Diana's funeral, opened the show with his hit Your Song. A host of other stars appeared including Rod Stewart, P Diddy, Nelly Furtado and Take That to name but a few. There was also a performance from the English National Ballet and stars also performed songs from famous Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals. The princes watched the concert with their friends and they were seen on their feet dancing, clapping and singing throughout the show. Prince William and Harry took to the stage towards the beginning of the show to introduce what was their mother's favourite band, 1980s stars Duran Duran. They also came back at the end of the concert to thank everyone who helped to celebrate Diana's life with them. William told the crowd it had been "the most perfect way to remember her, and this is how she would want to be remembered." Nelson Mandela, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and others recorded video tributes and the concert ended with video footage from Diana's childhood. Proceeds from the concert will go to charities the Princess supported when she was alive. 2 Glossary 词汇表 untimely death – 过早地过世 to mark – 纪念 came up with the idea – 提出这一 in memory of – 为了纪念 …… 想法 brand new – 崭新的 turned up – 到场 broadcast – 转播 tuned in – 收视 extravaganza – 盛事 hit – 成功曲目 a host of other stars – 众多明星 to name but a few – (在众多明星 中)简单地列举几个 on their feet – 站着 took to the stage – 登台 crowd – 观众, 众人 former – 前任 Prime Minister – 首相 video tributes – 致词录像 footage – 录像 proceeds – 收益 1. humanities Article Surveillance and Social Memory: Remembering Princess Diana with CCTV Nicole Falkenhayner English Seminar, Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg, Rempartstr. 15, Freiburg 79085, Germany; [email protected] Academic Editor: Peta Tait Received: 30 May 2016; Accepted: 17 August 2016; Published: 1 September 2016 Abstract: Since the 1990s, surveillance camera images have experienced a function creep from their juridical uses into journalism and entertainment. In these contexts, the images have also become memory media. This article, for the first time, analyses CCTV images, meaning closed circuit surveillance camera images, as memory media and discusses the implications of our use of artefacts of control within a frame of mediated constructions of social memory. The article undertakes this work by analyzing remediations of the CCTV images of Diana Spencer and Dodi Al-Fayed in the Ritz Hotel in Paris on 30 August 1997 in television news and a documentary from 2007 and 2011, respectively. It is shown how social memory of Diana’s death is a contested site, in which the images play a specific role. Keywords: Surveillance; images; social memory; social emotion; experientiality; narration; mediatisation; Princess Diana 1. Introduction On the morning of 1 September 1997, the world woke up to the news of the death of Princess Diana and her recent lover, Dodi Al-Fayed, in a car crash in Paris. The death of Princess Diana had an enormous impact on the civil and emotional culture of the UK, making it a stable part of British, but also global, social memory [1]. The CCTV images, meaning closed circuit surveillance camera images, that were made by surveillance cameras in the Ritz Hotel were affect-affording in the narrations of Diana’s death.

Adrian Hernandez: Hi, this is Adrian Hernandez, and I'm one of the NIH Collaboratory Grand Rounds moderators, and today we're here with several people from Survivor Corps to reflect and discuss what they did recently to address patient experiences seeking medical care around COVID-19. So I'm here with Diana, Natalie, Nick, who will be reflecting on what they've had to do to address these issues. So welcome to our podcast, and let me start off first with Diana, can you just tell us a little bit of how things started? Diana Berrent: Yeah, so actually we are the largest patient advocacy movement in the world, but oddly enough, we did not start out as a patient advocacy movement. I was one of the first people in the New York area to get a positive diagnosis of COVID, and one of the first people in the country to come forward with my identity, in early March of 2020. I ended up having a pretty average case of COVID, what I call the Tylenol and Gatorade kind, I was never hospitalized, there's nothing dramatic about it.

  • Diana and Race: Romance and the Reconfiguration of the Nation1
Diana and Race: Romance and the Reconfiguration of the Nation1 Mica Nava This article was published in Mourning Diana: Nation, Culture and the Performance of Grief, edited by Adrian Kear and Lynn Steinberg, London: Routledge (1999). A slightly modified version entitled ‘Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed: Romance, Race and the Reconfiguration of the Nation’ was included as Chapter 7 in Mica Nava’s Visceral Cosmopolitanism: Gender, Culture and the Normalisation of Difference, Oxford: Berg (2007) Introduction Every now and again there are cultural events which freeze frame the transformed and transformative elements of a historical period. Princess Diana’s death and the week which followed exposed to the world the lineaments of a new British nation which bore no resemblance to the conventional heritage images disseminated around the globe in travel posters, films and BBC dramas over the decades since world war two and the decline of empire. The lead role, it is true, still belonged to a princess, but the supporting cast – the metropolitan populace - was composed to a remarkable extent of the visibly-different dark-skinned children and grandchildren of Britain’s former colonies, bolstered by a cosmopolitan ragbag of migrant physiognomies from around the world. And more striking still: in this new scenario the lover of the golden haired princess was dark-skinned and from somewhere else as well. The public face of Britain was no longer white. This new picture of the nation, captured and played back on the endless hours of television footage, was transmitted not only to the world outside. It registered and was constitutive of a transformation in the domestic consciousness as well.
