GOLDEYES COMEBACK FALLS SHORT: The Winnipeg Goldeyes lost 9-7 to the Milwaukee Milkmen at The Ballpark at Jackson on Friday night. Milwaukee jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the third on run-scoring hits from David Washington and Christian Correa, as well as a two-run home run from Aaron Hill. Kyle Martin cut the lead in half with a two-run double in the bottom of the third, which was the 500 th base hit of his professional career. The Milkmen re-extended their lead with three runs in the top of the fourth. Adam Brett Walker hit a two-run double and was followed by an RBI double from Washington. Christ Conley led off the top of the fifth with a solo home run, and Milwaukee stretched the lead to 9-2 in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from Tony Rosselli. In the bottom of the seventh, Winnipeg cut the deficit to 9-4 on a Martin bases loaded walk and a Max Murphy RBI fielder’s choice. Winnipeg rallied for three runs and brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth on a Milwaukee error and a two-run double from Kevin Lachance before Milkmen reliever Karch Kowalczyk retired Dakota Conners for the final out. Eduard Reyes started for the Goldeyes and took the loss, allowing seven earned runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings. Reyes walked four and struck out two. Pete Perez pitched 3.1 innings of relief, allowing one unearned run with five .

ALL-TIME AGAINST THE MILKMEN: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 10-11 all-time against the Milwaukee Milkmen, including a 6-5 record in home games, and an 0-1 record at The Ballpark at Jackson. The Milkmen won the 2020 American Association championship, finishing in first place in the regular season with a 34-26 record, and then beating the four games to one in the American Association Championship Series. Milwaukee was 38-62 during its expansion season in 2019. The Milkmen opened Franklin Field on June 24th , 2019 with a 3-2 loss to the Gary SouthShore RailCats before earning its first official home win the following night over Gary SouthShore, 8-2. Anthony Barone returns for his second season as Milkmen manager, and became the first rookie manager to pilot an American Association club to a championship in 2020. Barone served as Milwaukee’s bench coach in 2019. Barone previously managed the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League’s (PGCBL) Jamestown Jammers from 2015-18, winning a championship in 2018. Barone was named PGCBL Coach of the Year in both 2017 and 2018.

SERIES MATCHUP: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 5-10, in sixth place in the American Association North Division, and 5.5 games behind the Fargo- Moorhead RedHawks. The Goldeyes were just swept in a three-game series by the at Impact Field. The Goldeyes are tied for seventh in the American Association in hitting (.253), 11th in pitching (6.61), and tied for fourth in fielding (.979). The Milwaukee Milkmen are 8-7, tied for third place in the North, and 2.5 games behind the RedHawks. The Milkmen just lost two of three to the at Franklin Field. The Milkmen are fourth in the league in batting (.264), third in pitching (3.96), and tied for second in defence (.982). This is the second of four head-to-head series this season between the Goldeyes and the Milkmen. The Goldeyes were 4-5 against the Milkmen in 2020.

PROJECTED UPCOMING PITCHING MATCHUPS TONIGHT’S STARTERS: In game one, the Goldeyes go 6/8 vs. KCC: TBA vs. TBA with right-hander Joey Gonzalez who is 1-1 with a 6.19 6/9 vs. KCC: TBA vs. TBA ERA in three starts this season. Gonzalez took the loss at 6/10 vs. KCC: TBA vs. TBA Chicago on Monday, allowing six earned runs on eight hits in 5.0 innings. Gonzalez walked two and struck out three.

Prior to this season, Gonzalez last pitched in 2019 for two Houston Astros affiliates. Gonzalez was a combined 4-2 with two saves and a 3.58 ERA in 28 relief appearances for the Low-A Midwest League’s Quad Cities River Bandits and the High-A Carolina League’s Fayetteville Woodpeckers. Gonzalez did not allow an earned run in 15 of his 28 outings.

Gonzalez was drafted by the Astros in the 28 th round in 2018 out of Stetson University in DeLand, Florida. During his junior season in 2018, Gonzalez was 8-3 with a 2.07 ERA in 78.1 innings for the Hatters. The 2.07 ERA ranked 15 th in the NCAA among pitchers with at least 70.0 innings.

In game two, the Goldeyes go with rookie right-hander Mike Webb who was signed earlier today. Webb will be making his professional debut. Webb was 7-2 with a 3.24 ERA in 14 starts at the University of Rhode Island (Kingston, Rhode Island) this past spring as a sixth-year senior. Webb struck out 68 and walked only 22 in 89.0 innings for the Rams. Webb is a graduate student at the University of Rhode Island, and was granted an extra season of eligibility as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Webb pitched at Rhode Island College (Providence, Rhode Island) from 2017-20, compiling an 11-7 record with four saves and a 3.50 ERA for the Anchormen in 154.1 innings over 33 appearances, 22 of them as a starting pitcher. Webb played his true freshman season at Saint Michael’s College (Colchester, Vermont) where he made three appearances before taking a medical redshirt.

Tonight will be Webb’s first career appearance against Milwaukee, as well as his first career appearance at The Ballpark at Jackson.

In game one, the Milkmen go with former Major League left-hander David Holmberg who is 1-1 with a 4.82 ERA in three starts this season. Holmberg took the loss vs. Gary SouthShore last Sunday, allowing three earned runs on 11 hits in 6.2 innings. Holmberg walked none and struck out six. Holmberg has pitched at least 6.0 innings in each of his first three starts this season.

Holmberg was 6-1 with a 2.34 ERA in 12 starts for the Milkmen in 2020. Holmberg led the American Association in ERA, ranked fourth in strikeouts (76), and third in wins. Holmberg was then 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA in two postseason starts, helping Milwaukee win the American Association championship. Holmberg started and won the clinching Game Five of the American Association Championship Series on September 17 th at Sioux Falls. In 2019, Holmberg was 2-8 with a 5.17 ERA in 20 starts for the Atlantic League’s Somerset Patriots.

Holmberg reached the Major Leagues from 2013-15 and again in 2017 with the , , and . Holmberg was a combined 5-10 with a 5.49 ERA in 119.2 Major League innings. Holmberg was drafted by the White Sox in the second round in 2009 out of Port Charlotte High School (Port Charlotte, Florida). Holmberg was traded from the White Sox to the Diamondbacks on July 30 th , 2010 in exchange for right-handed pitcher . Holmberg is in his 13th season of professional baseball, and is 73-83 lifetime with a 3.99 ERA in 294 appearances, 243 of them as a starting pitcher.

In game two, the Milkmen go with right-hander Matthew Solter who is 0-1 with a 3.32 ERA in three starts this season. Solter took a no-decision vs. Sioux City on Monday, allowing three earned runs on six hits in 7.0 innings. Solter walked one and struck out seven. The Explorers won the game 8-3. Solter has allowed three or fewer runs, and has struck out at least seven batters in each of his first three starts this season.

Solter was 4-4 with a 3.89 ERA for the St. Paul Saints last season, striking out 77 and walking 23 in 81.0 innings pitched. Solter finished 10 th in the American Association in ERA, third in strikeouts (77), and tied for fourth in wins above replacement (WAR) among pitchers (1.8). Solter was traded from the Saints to the Milkmen along with catcher Chris Chinea on December 8 th , 2020 to complete an earlier trade.

In 2019, Solter was a combined 5-1 with a 3.66 ERA in 13 starts at two levels of the Cleveland Indians’ organization. Solter struck out 62 and allowed just two home runs in 66.1 innings for the High-A Carolina League’s Lynchburg Hillcats and the Double-A Eastern League’s Akron RubberDucks.

Solter went undrafted out of Furman University (Greenville, South Carolina) in 2015 and signed in the American Association with the Gary SouthShore RailCats. After posting a 3.86 ERA in 25.2 innings for the RailCats, Solter’s contract was purchased by the San Francisco Giants. Solter pitched in the Giants’ farm system from 2016-17 before signing with the Saints in 2018. Solter was 3-5 with a 4.73 ERA in 15 starts for the Saints and helped them reach the American Association Championship Series. The Indians purchased Solter’s contract from the Saints in February of 2019.

Solter is in his seventh season of professional baseball, and is 25-23 lifetime with a 4.42 ERA in 97 appearances, 70 of them as a starting pitcher. Solter has averaged just 0.7 home runs per nine innings during his career.

GOLDEYES MANAGER: Rick Forney is now in his 16 th season as Goldeyes’ manager, and his 25 th overall within the organization. During his first 15 years at the helm, the Goldeyes have posted a .544 overall winning percentage (784-657), 11 winning seasons, nine playoff appearances, and an American Association-record three championships. Forney was voted American Association Manager of the Year in 2011, and again in 2020 after guiding a team that played all of its games on the road. Forney’s .551 winning percentage in the American Association (2011-20) is the fourth-highest in league history (there have been 58 total American Association managers through the 2020 season). Forney pitched professionally for 10 years, including four seasons with the Goldeyes. During his playing career, Forney was 89-56 (.614) with a 3.63 ERA, and reached the Triple-A level in 1995.

TENNESSEE BOUND: Due to the ongoing closure of the Canada/US border, the Winnipeg Goldeyes have partnered with the Jackson Generals professional baseball club to host Winnipeg at The Ballpark at Jackson to begin the 2021 season. The Generals were a Double-A Southern League affiliate of the , Seattle Mariners, and Arizona Diamondbacks from 1998-2019. The franchise hosted the Southern League All-Star Game on two occasions, and won four Southern League championships. The Generals are located in Jackson, Tennessee, which is 208 kilometres southwest of Nashville and 140 kilometres northeast of Memphis.

OH CANADA: Goldeyes’ left-handed pitcher Travis Seabrooke was named to the Canadian National Team on May 22 nd and will compete in the Americas Qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics later this month. Seabrooke joins infielder Wes Darvill as current Goldeyes on the Canadian National Team. Former Goldeyes Eric Wood (2020) and Evan Rutckyj (2017) were also named to the team.

GOLDEYES SIGN COLLEGE BATTERYMATES: The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed right-handed pitcher Mike Webb and catcher Sonny Ulliana on June 5th . Both recently completed their college careers at the University of Rhode Island (Kingston, Rhode Island). Webb is a graduate student who was granted an extra year of eligibility as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and was 7-2 with a 3.24 ERA in 14 starts. Ulliana hit .331 with five home runs and 35 RBI in 47 games, while throwing out 27 percent of opposing base stealers. The Goldeyes released catcher Michael Gulino.

EYES ON THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION: The American Association has sold the contracts of 25 players to Major League organizations since the start of training camp on May 6 th . The Goldeyes have had three players picked up since then, including RHP Ryan Dull (Seattle Mariners), RHP Josh Lucas (Arizona Diamondbacks), and IF Alexis Pantoja (Arizona Diamondbacks).

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION BACK TO FULL STRENGTH: The American Association returns to 12 teams and a 100-game schedule in 2021. The league is split into two divisions, with the top two regular season winning percentages from each division qualifying for the postseason.

ROSTER RULES RETURN, ADJUSTED: After waiving all classification restrictions in 2020, the American Association returns to its traditional roster rules. Teams may carry up to 11 players classified as LS-4. Seven of those 11 may be LS-5 or higher, while five of them may be classified as veterans. Teams must carry at least five classified rookies on a full, 25-man roster (four rookies if carrying 22 players, or three rookies if carrying 21 players). The American Association recently announced that teams may carry up to 25 players for the entire 2021 season, up from 23 players in previous years.

GOLDEYES ENTER 28th SEASON: The Winnipeg Goldeyes enter their 28th season in 2021. The franchise brought professional baseball back to the city in 1994. The Goldeyes have finished with a winning record in 22 of their first 27 seasons. The Goldeyes have reached the postseason 19 times, and have won four championships (Northern League 1994, American Association 2012, 2016, 2017).

ALUMNI REPORT: RHP Brandon Kintzler (2007-08) is currently signed with the Philadelphia Phillies. Kintzler has pitched in the Major Leagues every season since 2010. RHP Brandon Marklund signed with the Goldeyes as a true rookie in 2019 before having his contract purchased by the . RHP Kent Hasler pitched for the Goldeyes in 2020 after the Goldeyes selected him from the Sioux City Explorers in the American Association dispersal draft. Hasler signed with the in May and was assigned to the Low-A East’s Carolina Mudcats. RHP Josh Lucas was signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks in May after making three appearances for the Goldeyes at the end of 2020. Lucas is currently pitching for the Triple-A West’s Reno Aces.
