DOUGLAS COLLEGE CAPTURES BRONZE SPONSORS BRONZE AT 2004 CWBL FINALS Fredericton, New Brunswick hosted the 18th edition of the Canadian Wheelchair Basketball League Finals March 25-28th, 2004. The event featured 8 teams from across Canada: the Winnipeg Thunder, Fredericton A.L. Gullison Allcourts and Saint John Mavericks from New Brunswick; the CIVA Pulsar and Laval Gladiateurs from Quebec; the Twin City Spinners, from Ontario; the Calgary Grizzlies from Alberta; and the Douglas College Lions of British Columbia. Montreal CIVA put up a strong defense combined with some great shooting as they downed the Fredericton A.L. Gullison All Courts 60-54 in the Gold Medal game of the Canadian Wheelchair Basketball League National Championships. In an exciting game, the Douglas College Lions from BC SUPPORTERS edged the Saint John Mavericks 72-68 to in the Bronze Medal contest. The game was a real seesaw battle with the lead changing throughout. With 3 minutes left the teams ICORD were deadlocked 66-66. Playing a total of five games against Variety Village from Toronto and Team Quebec, the BC squad gained valuable experience playing the game at a high level of competition. After a great weekend and lots of fun the team returned home with a bronze medal. Representing Team BC was Avril Harris (Prince George), Ryan Isabelle (Prince George), Mark Saunders (Lantzville), Sunera Samarkoon (Burnaby), Nick Konishi (Richmond), Cameron Knowles (Richmond), Matthew Ficocelli (Kelowna) and Peter Won (North Vancouver) and Coach Peter Taylor (Surrey). Peter Won was also named to the all-star team. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE Wheelchair basketball in BC continues to flourish, however we can always use more help to assist us in achieving our goals and moving forward as an organization. The success of BCWBS is reliant on the assistance we receive from our membership and volunteers. About the Americas Cup: The Americas Cup is the America Zone Qualifying tournament for entry into the World Championships set to take place July 2010 in Birmingham, England. The top three teams from the event will earn a spot amongst the world’s best representing North and South America. Tournament Structure: The Americas Cup in Richmond, BC will host the men’s division only. Teams represented will be Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Jamaica, Mexico, United States and Venezuela. The teams will be broken up into two pools -as per IWBF standards – compete in three round robin games and move on to the quarter-final round, semi-finals and eventual medal games.

It is a fast-paced team game that attracts competitive athletes with physical disabilities that prevent them from running, jumping, and pivoting. Not all athletes who play wheelchair basketball require the use of a wheelchair for daily life. Open to male and female athletes, wheel- chair basketball requires two teams to play. Each team has twelve players with just five on court during playtime. The objective of each team is to score more points than the opposing team. Points are given for scoring goals by shooting the basketball into the opposing team’s basket. A goal scores from one to three points. Teams actively try to prevent the opposing team from making goals. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins. Each team is given 24 seconds to complete a goal attempt. If the team with the ball exceeds this time limit, then the ball and the right of play is granted to the opposing team. Goals are scored in the following way: • A free-throw goal = 1 point • A goal from the two-point field goal area = 2 points • A goal from the three-point field goal area = 3 points Wheelchair basketball games have four ten-minute periods with a 15-min- ute interval between the second and third period and one-minute intervals between the first and second, and third and fourth periods.

The authors hope that the publication of this list of teams and players will encourage federations of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) to search their records in order to add the names of missing players and coaches in a subsequent publication. We apologize for the numerous omissions and for the errors in spelling to certain names. This is due to missing documentation or errors in spelling on documents we obtained. During our editing of this work, in March 2009 and following, we were fortunate to receive some names of players that we had previously had no success in obtaining. We extend our gratitude to Dr. Ian Brittain, Paralympic historian, for providing the names of starting-5s for each competing nation in the 1960 Paralympics, as well as some missing scores.
