On Thursday, July 11th, we remember St. Benedict of Nursia, one of the most popular Saints in the Church. St. Bene- dict is best known for “The Rule,” which is, quite literally, a rulebook for Monastic life (Religious who live apart from ! society, following a discipline of work and prayer). Very highly regarded and still used today, St. Benedict wrote “The Rule” sometime after 529 A.D. This book is often featured in images of St. Benedict, including that found on his medal. The medal of St. Benedict is a prayer of exorcism against Satan, a prayer for strength in time of temptation, a prayer for peace among ourselves and among the nations of the world, a prayer that the Cross of Christ be our light and guide, a prayer of firm rejec- tion of all that is evil, a prayer of petition that we may, with Christian courage, “walk in God’s ways, with the ! !Gospel ! as our ! guide” (as St. Benedict urges us). ! ! We do not know when the first medal of St. Benedict was struck. Over the years, the design of the medal has changed, however, the Jubilee Medal of 1880 has proven to be more popular throughout the Christian world than any other medal struck in honor St. Benedict. This is the medal most often used today. ! Front of the Jubilee medal: ! St. Benedict holds a cross in his right hand and his Rule in his left. At his right side is a cup with a serpent (or snake) escap- ing; at his left side is a crow taking away a piece of poisoned bread. ! Both of these recall miraculous events when attempts ! !on St. Benedict’s life were thwarted. Near the Saint are the words, “CRUX SANCTI PATRIS BEN- ! ! !EDICTI.” This means "The Cross of Holy Father Benedict." Around the medal are the words "EIUS IN OBITU NOSTRO PRAESENTIA.” ! That means "He defends us in our death with his presence.” ! Back of the Jubilee medal: ! ! !PAX means peace C S P B stand for Crux Sancti Patri Benedicti !! ! !"Cross of the Holy Father Benedict" C S S M L stands for Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux ! ! !"May the Holy Cross be my light." N D S M D stands for Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux ! ! !"The devil will not be my leader." S M Q L stands for Sunt Mala Quae Libas ! ! !"These things presented to me are evil." I V B stands for Ipse Venea Bibas ! "Drink the poison yourself!" ! ! There is no special way prescribed for carrying or ! V R S stands for Vade Retro Satana ! wearing the Medal of St. Benedict. It can be worn on a ! chain around the neck, attached to one’s Rosary, kept !"Get behind me, Satan." in one’s pocket or purse, or placed in one’s car or N S M V stands for Non Suade Mihi Vana ! home. Some of the faithful often put the medal into the "You can't persuade me to do evil.” ! foundations of houses and building, on the walls of barns and sheds, or in one’s place of business. The purpose of using the medal in any of the above ways is to call down God’s blessing and protection upon us, wherever we are, and upon our homes and possessions, especially through the intercession of St. Benedict. By the conscious and devout use of the medal, it becomes, as it were, a constant silent prayer !and reminder ! to us of our dignity as followers of Christ. ! ! Note: Medals, crosses, statues, and other articles have long been used as a means of fostering and expressing our reli- gious devotion to God and the Saints. The use of any religious article is therefore intended as a means of reminding us of God and of stirring up in us a ready willingness and desire to serve God and our neighbor. With this understanding we reject any use of religious articles as if they were mere charms or had some magic power to bring us good luck or better health. Such is not the Christian attitude. Meet the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne, NY hawthorne dominicans.org ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Who are we? The Congregation of Saint Rose of Lima was founded in 1900 by Rose Hawthorne Lathrop, (Mother Mary Alphonsa), the daughter of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Rose was a convert to Catholicism and, in searching for a way to serve God and the poor, began her work of caring for incurable cancer patients on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. As consecrated religious, we live our consecra- tion first through the daily Liturgy of the Eucharist, our daily liturgical prayer, our common apostolate, and our ! lifelong study. ! ! What do we do? We have three Homes; one in Haw- thorne, NY, and one each in Atlanta and Pennsylvania. Our Homes are dedicated to providing palliative care to persons afflicted with incurable cancer who cannot afford to pay for care.
