ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION: Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community.

The two story residence at 8 Gene Street (DAR.746) looks slightly northeast and is located approximately twenty feet from the road. The two by two bay dwelling is surrounded by out-buildings on the southwest end. These include a 27 foot diameter above ground swimming pool and a small shed on the southern side, and a one bay garage on the western side. A paved driveway is located to the north connecting the residence to the road side. Two raised entrances face towards the road; one being encompassed by a small porch, the other acting as an appendage with a closed-in porch space and a side gable roof. This rectangular-shaped structure sits on a concrete foundation. The simple asphalt hipped roof includes wide prairie style eaves and sits on top of the shingle style facades. These wood shingles are interrupted by paneling on the first floor of the front façade. Tall, narrow-framed windows brighten the top floor while a hooded entrance is flanked by a bay window on the first floor. Both the windows and the entrance are flanked with white vinyl trim to contrast the darker shingled . The interior, brick chimney rests in the center of the residence.

The one bay garage has a hip roof and the one story walls are clad in wood shingles. The garage rests on a concrete foundation. To the right of the garage door is a single fixed sash replacement window.

HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community.

The development south of Old Westport Road and west of Chase Road was not laid out on the 1895 map of Dartmouth. This area was laid out as Dartmouth Gardens in 1912 and the house probably dates from the purchase of John Santos in 1916. In the 1930 US census, John Santos (b1887) and his wife Mary were living off Chase Road on Hillcrest Avenue (now Gene Street). John was a mill worker (c1920) and later a farm laborer (c1930) who immigrated to the US from the Portugal 1902-1904. His wife Mary worked as a spooler in a cotton mill (c1920).
