2011 ITF WORLD CUP TEAMS played in Christchurch in February.

The ITF cancelled four of the Seniors World Team Championship Cups scheduled to be played in Christchurch, because of severe damage to the tennis facilities, but the Cups scheduled for Timaru and Ashburton continued. All 29 Australian players in New Zealand survived the terrible earthquakes. There were twelve of our players in Christchurch; the rest were at Ashburton and Timaru.

RESULTS of ITF SENIORS WORLD TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIPS completed.

SUSAN LENGLEN Cup (Women 35+) 5th place Team – Karen Kleverlaan (VIC); Juliann Jacobsen (NSW); Michelle Leyden (SA) & Karen Pearce (QLD) MARIO BUENO Cup (Women 50+) 2nd Place – Silver medal Team – Ros Balodis (ACT); Kerrie Douglas (VIC) & Leanne Swaysland (NSW) MAUREEN CONNOLLY Cup (Women 55+) 3rd place – Bronze medal Team – Lyn Mortimer (QLD); Robin Walker (VIC) & Sara Goddard (NSW) TONY TRABERT Cup (Men 40+) 3rd place – Bronze medal Team – Brett Patten (WA); Martin Richards (SA); Paul Kleverlaan (VIC) & Chris O’Mara (QLD) AUSTRIA Cup (Men 55+) 1st place – Gold medal Team – Glenn Busby (VIC); Gary Thoroughgood (NSW) & Rodney Wurtz (NSW)

In the ITF World Team Ranking list, Australia has made substantial progress in the 35+ women leaping 10 places to number 12 after their 5 th placing in Timaru NZ and in the men’s 40+ jumping 9 places to number 9 after their bronze medal placing in Ti- maru NZ.

The 55 men’s team is still number 1 after defending their world title for the 7 th time in a row establishing them as still the highest points ranking team in the world in any age group for men or women seniors or super seniors ; this is an outstanding achievement.

ITF SENIORS WORLD INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The following announcement was made by ITF President, Francesco Ricci Bitti: With regret, the ITF, in consultation with and Canterbury Tennis, has decided to cancel the 2011 ITF Seniors World Individual Championships scheduled to be played in Christchurch, New Zealand next week. The ITF Seniors World Team Championships currently being played in Timaru and Ashburton will continue as planned.

The organisers will now make every effort to ensure the safe return home for all participants. The ITF thanks Tennis New Zealand and the organisers from Canterbury Tennis for all their efforts on behalf of the Seniors World Team and Individual Champion- ships.

“We send our sincere sympathies to the people of Christchurch who have suffered so much due to the earthquake that hit their city on Tuesday,” said ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti. “While we are, of course, relieved that all the players, captains and offi- cials who were in Christchurch this week are safe, we are mindful of the loss of life and the large number of injuries that have oc- curred in Christchurch. We thank Tennis New Zealand and Canterbury Tennis for their outstanding efforts on behalf of the Sen- iors World Team and Individual Championships. We also thank the players for their support of both events and their willingness to play on in these difficult conditions.”

Thus concluded a week of mixed feelings on both sides of the Tasman. There was no choice in Christchurch but to suspend play, but it was gratifying that in two places that were undamaged by the earthquake, the ITF could honour the commitment to the or- ganisations that had put so much time and effort into their preparations for these World Teams’ Championships.

Congratulations to all our Australian representatives.

Eighty-three players took part in the Dawson Callide Valley Open Seniors tournament held in Biloela. Apart from a half hour interruption on the front courts due to a shower during Sunday morning, the weather was kind to us. Once again we had strong local support and we appreciate the support we receive from other centres. Our youngest player was Tracey Richardson (37) from Biloela, playing in her first Seniors Tournament while John Teakle (82), also from Biloela was the old- est. Thanks to Clarice White, Secretary for this report.

2011 BUNDABERG SENIORS 32nd Annual Tournament—June 11-13. This tournament was cancelled due to rain.

2011 ROCKHAMPTON tournament scheduled for July 9-10 was unfortunately cancelled. The Committee have been experiencing the ongoing problem of players not wanting to play on hardcourt surfaces. Instead on Sunday 10 July they held a social Charity Fundrising Day open to 35 and over players with all profits going to local charities. The second pur- pose of the event was to entice players back to the game or to increase occasional players participation in playing more regularly. The day was a resounding success with over 80 players taking part. They will apply for a tournament date for next year and may offer a different format to continue the great support we received from our own Central Queensland players. Thanks to Des Campbell, Secretary, Tennis Veterans Rockhampton Inc. for this report.

2011 TENNIS SENIORS QLD CHAMPIONSHIPS – GOLD COAST – JULY 1-4. Once again we were blessed with mostly good weather although it was a bit wet starting on Friday. Numbers for Singles events were up and the standard of tennis was well worth watching. Numbers were good in Ladies Singles too. 326 Players took part in the tournament—26 from New Zealand, which was appreciated after their disastrous earthquakes. Tournament Director, Gail Bates conducted the tournament in her usual professional manner. Courts and facilities at both Gold Coast Seniors and Miami Tennis Club were at their best and we thank these Clubs for the use of their facilities.
