See article page 35 I have just got hold of a copy of the Thomson Winter 2004/05 and it looks like we are to have a based Britannia for that winter (which I don't believe we do this winter):

Tue Costa Blanca 07:30 22:50 Wed Lanzarote 11:20 20:45 Thu Costa Del Sol 07:50 14:55 Thu Costa Blanca 16:30 23:05 FrI Tenerife 11:40 21:20 Sat Majorca 07:30 13:55 Part Season Sat Gran Canaria 15:25 19:05 Part Season but must be a misprint look at the times

Not very heavily used but better than nothing.

Dear Cliff Having recently joined Air Yorkshire, I am finding the monthly journal most useful.

Could you possibly clarify an entry in the LBA August Movements on page 16 of the November journal? G BWFN landing at 1203 on 29th and taking off at 1738 on 31st is given as a TB20 Trinidad. According to my reference books GBWFN is described as Hapi Cygnet SF2A, being worked on in Cumbernauld)

Your comments would be appreciated.

Kind regards ' Peter Gilbert Photograph Denis Yeadon Thanks Peter, for spotting this error. Your comment Is encouraging as it shows that someone does read the listings which members take great care with and usually get righL But with anything like this mistakes can slip in. ^

Looking up the registration in Civil Aircraft Markings 2003 GBWFN Hapi Cygnet SF2A owned by T Cravirford.

NINE MUSEUMS IN FIVE DAYS AND NO AIRCRAFT! In August, I spent a five day tioliday in Portsmouth and during that period I visited nine Navy and Amny museums in Hampshire: The Royal Military Police Museum in Chichester, the Light Infantry Museum, the Royal Greenjackets Museum, the Ghurka Museum and the King's Royal Hussars Museum in Winchester, the Royal Marines Museum and D Day Museum in Southsea and the Royal Navy Explosives Museum and Royal Recently. 30 31 VORTEX WAKE My first flight in an Embraer Regional Jet saw us leaving LBIA on BM471 to Cork City. Vortex wake is always a major consideration in all aspects of ATC. Hazardous wake vortices begin to be generated by fixed wing aircraft wtien the nosewheel lifts off the runway on takeoff and continues until Our aircraft for the flight was GRJXF ERJ 145. which carries up to 49 passengers in the one/two the nosewheel touches down on landing. The heavier the aircraft and the slower it is flying, the stronger configuration. It was nice to fly on something other than the ubiquitous Boeing Charabanc. Problems with the vortex Vortices are especially persistent in calm conditions. the Aviance computerised checkin did not delay us unduly; however the long queue at the security screening had the guy in front of us feeling distinctly edgy about missing his Ryanair flight to Dublin. Before I explain the spacings that are required between aircraft, it is first necessary to realise that all aircraft are split into one of four groups according to their maximum total weight at takeoff. These groups We flew at 32.000 feet over Merseyside with views of Anglesey and the Menai Straight, turned left over are HEAVY (e.g. B747, A340). MEDIUM (e.g. B757, A320). SMALL (e.g. Dash8. Embraer 145) and LIGHT Dublin and headed south to Cork where we landed ontime on R17. (e.g. Jetstream, PA28). My expectations of Cork Airport, from a spotting point of view, were not very high after reading Alan Lord's When vectohng aircraft on to the ILS it is the controllers' responsibility to ensure that the correct spacings "European Airports". However, I was pleasantly surprised and the airport was interestingly busy on a are applied between successive aircraft. The following table shows the required spacings: Friday lunchtime. Our hotel was not expecting us until after 2pm so we stayed at the airport for a light lunch and I was able to do some spotting. First Aircraft Second Aircraft Minimum Distance (Miles) HEAVY HEAVY 4 The airport cafe bar area has large floor to ceiling windows looking out over the apron to the main runway MEDIUM 5 R35/17 near the R17 end. The windows are heavily tinted which makes photography a challenge. I was SMALL 6 expecting to see an ERJ of the new Cork based airline JetMagic, but had obviously missed it as it was UGHT 8 nowhere to be seen. There were Aer Arann ATRs and a selection of Aer Lingus types. A flight to Lourdes MEDIUM MEDIUM (*) 3 was provided by an all white B747 registered TFABP. Other aircraft of interest were Do328 DCIRB of SMALL 4 Cirrius, Volar A320EIIEP and the latest Air Wales ATR42 GWLSH. UGHT 6 SMALL MEDIUM or SMALL 3 One corner of the first floor caf6/bar area is taken up by an exhibition describing the airport's redevelopment UGHT 4 plans, with diagrams, maps, artists impressions and a large model. There will be a completely new and larger terminal to the north east of the existing building with links back to it. It is all due to be finished in time * Where the leading aircraft is a B757, DCS, B707 tL62 or VC10 then the minimum distance shall be for Cork being European City of Culture in 2005. Work is already in progress on the associated apron increased to 4 miles. extensions to replace the stands on which the new terminal will be built.

So, for example, if a Boeing 747(Heavy) is following an Airbus A340 (Heavy) then the minimum spacing is Our return flight was on the following Monday. The airport was much quieter, probably because there was 4 miles. However, if a Boeing 737 (Medium) is following the A340 (Heavy) then the spacing must be no 747 to Lourdes, I did see a JetMagic ERJ, EIGXD and the Cirrius 328 was there again. There was a TNT increased to 5 miles. . , ^ BAe146 and a DHL B757 parked in the cargo area. There were short delays on most incoming flights and the International Departure Lounge was consequently crowded with waiting passengers. The view of the In the above examples the required spacing between aircraft is measured in miles. However, vortex wake aeroplanes and the apron, for spotters, is better from the public caf6/bar than from the International requirements can also be measured in minutes. For example, minutes are used by the tower controller to Lounge. determine the minimum spacing required between departing aircraft. Whilst there are almost endless scenarios of this I shall try to explain the situations that occur regularly at Leeds Bradford. Here goes ... if, Luckily our flight was ontime and as we walked across the apron I was able to get a good photograph of for example, a B737 (Medium) departs from runway 32. the controller cannot let an aircraft like a C152 or a shiny Ryanair Boeing 738 ElCSZ sporting a roof line slogan which must be intended to incite Alitalia. Our PA28 (i.e. Light), departing from the same point on the runway, depart for at least 2 minutes. If, as is often mount for the flight home was ERJ135 GRJXJ and it looked splendid in the bright midday sunshine. We the case, the CI 52 or PA28 wishes to depart from further down the runway, for example the 32/27 climbed the integral air stairs with twentythree other passengers for the return to Leeds/Bradford. intersection, then the interval must be increased to 3 minutes. However, if the situation is reversed and the Light aircraft departs first followed by the Medium aircraft, then there is no minimum time required. The weather was exceptionally clear and bright and we left on R35 thus affording us wonderful views of the City of Cork as we climbed away to the north. The city centre is built on an island surrounded by arms Another important vortex wake consideration is Light aircraft (e.g. C152/PA28/Beech 76) flying in the of the River Lee before it rejoins to flow into the sea. This effect was clearly visible and made a fitting end circuit that are practising landings and takeoffs commonly known as "Touch and Go's". A Light aircraft to our weekend in Ireland's "second" city. cannot be cleared for a "Touch and Go" after a Heavy/Medium or Small departure until at least 3 minutes has elapsed. Again this is a very common occurrence at Leeds. While staying in Cork, we visited Blarney Castle and I await with growing anticipation, the promised changes that kissing the Blarney Stone will bestow upon me. Well that's it folks. I hope by this point you are still reading this article and if you are. you may be interested to know that next time I will explain the world of Flight Plans (subject of course to Chnstmas parties and Jim Stanfield being dragged around Leeds by 'er indoors Christmas shopping!).
