Master of Ceremonies, David Middleton, opened proceedings promptly at 7.30pm and commenced with three toasts to ensure that all attending were well oiled and enjoying themselves. President Ken Haines then welcomed dignitaries, members and guests and introduced District Governor Sam Camporeale. Sam, in a brief speech, recognised the professionalism of the South Australian Police and recognised the good fortune of those living in South Australia for the support of such a respected body.

Rotary Club of Unley Inc. 1 19 May 2017 Next to be introduced was Paul Sicluna, the last Police Officer of the Year in 2014. Paul spoke of his experiences as the winner in 2014, acknowledging the recognition he had been given as a police officer in Mount Gambier. He warned Peter, as the winner of the 2016 year award, that he would now have the affectionate nickname POOTY and expressed his pleasure in passing the accolade on. He also told of the many congratulations he had received, especially from friends of his son who called him a “Cool Cop”. Paul has now moved with his wife to Adelaide working in the communications centre, Paul also thanked his wife, Sandy, for her support. Following traditions of prior years Paul displayed his previously presented Pumpkin hat and proceeded to present his own award to Peter, his Mum knitted a “Pine Tree” beanie. It was then time for this year’s award presentation. President Elect Heather Kilsby introduced Peter Phillips as our latest awardee. Heather reminded those attending that the Unley Rotary club had been presenting the award since 1979 and that this was the 38th awardee. The awards intent was to recognise those that go far beyond the call of duty in providing help, comfort and assistance to the general community. Too often, adverse comments receive widespread publicity with little said of the tremendous contribution from members of the South Australia Police. The award is designed to recognise and promote good news about the South Australian Police. Peter Phillips, the Year 2016 recipient of award, is currently stationed in Mount Gambier. He was recently the officer in charge at the Beachport Police Station and was nominated in recognition of his support for that community. His involvement included being instrumental in founding the Beachport Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC), participation in the local Lions club and the Beachport District Development Association, fostering a solid working relationship. Heather finished by announcing that the recipient for the Police Officer of the Year Award for 2016 is Brevet Sergeant Peter Phillips. President Ken presented the award to Peter. Peter acknowledged receipt of the award and thanked Rotary for its generosity. Speaking of his background he spoke of Surf Life Saving being in his blood, since belonging to a NSW SLSC. Peter had studied and passed qualifications for detective work and passed up a chance to join the Criminal Investigation Branch when he saw the opportunity to move to Beachport. He knew this was right for his family and has not regretted the move, being much closer to his family in a country community. Peter concluded his acceptance by speaking about the human side of policing and his engagement with the community. He recognised the tremendous support received from the local Lions club in establishing the SLSC in 2016. Peter also acknowledged the sacrifices his wife Margo had made in giving up her career to support him in his. The award of the perpetual trophy was then made to Deputy Commissioner Linda Williams in her acceptance she acknowledged the support of the Unley Rotary club. She also spoke of Peter who joined SAPOL in 2005 and her memories of his graduation as a police cadet. Linda confirmed her support and that of SAPOL, for Peter, as the awardee of this prestigious award. President Ken conclude the evening by thanking Heather Kilsby and her team, for hard work in putting the 2016 award together. Ken also acknowledged the support of the Glenelg Golf Club for the splendid meal and the support of all .

Go Ahead and Do It Police officer talks to a driver: "Your tail light is broken, your tyres must be changed, and your bumper hangs halfway down. That will be 300 dollars!!" [Pause] Driver: "Alright, go ahead and do it. They want twice as much as that at the garage."

Houdini Wannabe A newly sworn police officer responded to a report of a pub disturbance. The 'disturbance' turned out to be well over six feet tall and weighed almost 150 kilos. What's more, he boasted that he could whip the police officer and Muhammad Ali too. Said the policeman, "I'll bet that you're also an escape artist, probably better than Houdini." The giant nodded.

"If I had some chains," the police officer continued, "you could show us how strong you really are. But all I've got is a set of handcuffs. Why don't you see just how quickly you can break out of them?" Once in the cuffs, the man puffed, pulled and jerked for four minutes. "I can't get out of these," the giant growled. "Are you sure?" the deputy asked. The fellow tried again. "Nope," he replied. "I can't do it." "In that case," said the police officer, "you're under arrest."

Knitting on the Road A police officer saw a woman knitting as she was driving. He could not believe his eyes. He yelled at her, “pull over!” She rolled down her window and yelled back, “No, a scarf!”
