2009-10 Golf 1 SEASON PREVIEW Returning nine letterwinners and adding an experienced junior to the lineup, the 2009-10 Saint Joseph’s golf team is poised to improve upon its ninth-place finish at last year’s Atlantic 10 Championships. With three seasons to his credit, senior Zach Smith will serve as team captain for the second straight year. Finishing fourth on the team in scoring average at 78.7 strokes-per-round, he posted three top-20 finishes during the 2008-09 campaign, which included a tie for ninth place at the Cleveland State Invitational. Making an immediate impact on the Hawks’ roster last season was rookie Jimmy Bea. In his first collegiate tournament, he placed seventh while helping Saint Joseph’s to a third-place team finish at the Navy Fall Invitational. Playing a team-best 25 rounds, Bea led the Hawks with a 75.8 strokes-per-round average and posted five top-20 finishes, including a tie for first at the Old Dominion/Seascape Invitational. Additionally, Bea also became just the second Saint Joseph’s golfer to earn PING All-Northeast Regional Team accolades, joining 2004 honoree Billy Stewart. Playing in a career-high eight tournaments last season, senior Bill Macknis established himself as one of most consistent letterwinners for the Hawks. Over 17 rounds, Macknis averaged 78.9 strokes a round, and capped the season with a team-best 24th-place finish at last year’s Atlantic 10 Championship. Competing in 22 rounds, junior Josh Webb finished second on the team in scoring average (78.2) a season ago. An All-Conference honoree as a rookie, Webb was steady for the Hawks throughout his sophomore season, posting his best finish at the Cleveland State Invitational (tie for 14th). Appearing in five events, Ridgway averaged a career-best 79.9 strokes per round. The junior carded a season-best 69 in the opening round of the Georgetown Hoya Invitational and finished tied for 27th. As a freshman, Jaskel played a combined four rounds at the Old Dominion/Seascape Invitational and Navy Spring Invitational and averaged 80.3 strokes per round. Competing in one tournament each last year, Mitchell, Devlin and Sargis add experience to the Hawks’ roster and will look to earn more rounds this year. Coming to Saint Joseph’s after two years at Sacred Heart, Mefford adds more experience to a veteran lineup. As customary under Lynch, the Hawks have put together anoth- er challenging schedule. Opening the season at the Navy Fall Invitational, Saint Joseph’s will then compete with several of the top teams in the nation at both the Adams Cup of and the Frank Landrey Invitational. Returning to Philadelphia, the Hawks begin play at the Big 5 Invitational in early October, followed by the Hoya Invitational and the Seascape/Old Dominion Invite to wrap up the fall slate. The spring schedule opens with a 22-team field at the C&F Bank Invite, followed two weeks later by the Princeton Invitational. Saint Joseph’s will then travel to the Navy Spring Invitational before finish- ing its regular schedule at Penn State’s Rutherford Collegiate. With the experienced lineup, the Hawks look to improve upon last year’s Atlantic 10 finish when they tee it up at this year’s confer- ence championship. Facing some of the top teams in the region the first weekend of May, Saint Joseph’s combination of talent, season- ing and skill has the Hawks ready to make a run at the A-10 leaders Sophomore Jimmy Bea earned PING All-Region accolades as a and capture the program’s first conference title. rookie, becoming just the second Hawk golfer to earn the honor.

2 Saint Joseph’s University LLANERCH COUNTRY CLUB Scenic Llanerch Country Club in Havertown, Pa., has served as the home for the Saint Joseph’s University golf team since 1959. Founded in 1919, Llanerch ranks as one of the finest courses in the Delaware Valley. Taking on many shapes over the years, the current 18-hole configuration opened on April 27, 1949 and measures 6,482 yards with a par of 72. Possessing a rich history, many of the nation’s best professionals have played on the Llanerch links over the past 80 years. Arguably the biggest tournament to be played on the site was the 1958 PGA Championship. Golf legend Dow Finsterwald captured the title that year with a score of 276 for 72 holes. That tournament became particularly prominent because stroke play format was used for the first time in PGA Championship history. Other notable events hosted by the course include the Philadelphia Inquirer Invitational in 1945. Byron Nelson captured the title that year, posting the seventh of 11 consecutive tour- nament championships. It was also the site of the 1949 USGA Women’s Amateur Championship, won by Dorothy Germain Porter. Llanerch has also served as the host of the Philadelphia Amateur Championship three times (1931, 1934 and 1998), as well as the Philadelphia Section PGA Championship five times (1940, 1941, 1942, 1943 and 1965).

THE HAWK The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in con- stant motion by flapping its wings throughout every game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto, “The Hawk Will Never Die!” Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a sym- bol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 50-year history. It has been select- ed as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook and ESPN magazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall of Fame.

2009-10 Golf 3 HEAD COACH Bob Lynch Head Coach La Salle ‘79 - 22nd Season The 2003 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, Bob Lynch is in his 22nd year at the helm of the Saint Joseph’s University golf program. During his tenure, he has led the Hawks back to prominence as one of the top golf programs in the Northeast and coached 17 Hawks to A-10 All-Conference honors.

The architect of one of the region’s most demanding schedules, Lynch took the Saint Joseph’s pro- gram to the cusp of its first-ever NCAA Championship berth in 2003 as the Hawks placed second at the Atlantic 10 Championship. The Crimson and Gray’s previous best effort at A-10s was third place, a feat the squad accomplished three straight seasons from 1993-95. He also guided the team to a berth in the Eastern Intercollegiate Golf Association Championships each of those seasons.

In his career as head coach, Lynch has compiled an overall record of 20 wins and 22 losses. The last dual meet competition for SJU was a 426-465 win over Lafayette at Llanerch Country Club during the 1992-93 season. Since that time, SJU has competed solely in invitational events that have taken the Hawks all over the country.

A former standout at Father Judge High School, Lynch is an avid golfer. The 51-year old works for Spikes, a company that specializes in trophies and plaques. The Richboro, Pa., resident also works as an official at high school and college basketball games and works on the scorer’s table for both Saint Joseph’s men’s and women’s basketball games. A 1979 graduate of , Lynch and his wife Monica are the parents of five children: Maureen, Bob, Dan, Brian, and Jim.

6 Saint Joseph’s University 2008-09 YEAR IN REVIEW It was an up-and-down season for Saint Joseph’s. The Hawks opened the season with a third-place finish, but weren’t able to match that con- sistently and eventually finished ninth at the Atlantic 10 Championship. Beginning the season at the Navy Fall Invitational, Saint Joseph’s got a solid all-around performance from its five-man squad, finishing in third place in the 17-team field, while every Hawk finished amongst the top-35 individual golfers. Playing in his first collegiate match, freshman Jimmy Bea quickly impressed, placing seventh with a one-over-par 143. He would continue his solid play at the Adams Cup, finishing tied for 16th overall, including a pair of one-under-par 71’s at the three-round tournament. Unfortunately for the Hawks, only sophomore Josh Webb had a consistent round like Bea, as SJU tied for 10th amongst 16 teams. Saint Joseph’s again was unable to get an all-around performance for the second straight tournament as it finished 12th of 14 teams at the Cleveland State Invitational. Junior captain Zach Smith posted his best performance of the season, tying for ninth at the Sand Ridge Golf Club, while Webb and Bea finished amongst the top-20. However, SJU would struggle to get solid performances from its final two spots and that inconsistency would carry over to the final three tour- naments of the fall, despite Bea tying for fourth at the Georgetown Hoya Invitational and finishing second at the Old Dominion/Seascape Invitational. The Hawks had a slow start to the spring season as they placed 13th at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate, and followed with an 18th- Steve Hudacek posted two Top-20 finishes in his final year on Hawk Hill, place finish at the First Market Bank Invitational tying for 15th at the Navy Fall Invitational and tying for 17th at Princeton. 2009-10 Golf 9 HISTORY Golf has a long and storied tradition of success at Saint Joseph’s University. One of the oldest athletic programs on campus, golf debuted as a varsity sport in 1931. The greatest player in the history of the Hawk golf program is John Truax (’78). The only SJU golfer to ever earn All-America honors, he garnered Honorable Mention status in 1978. Individually, he earned a berth in the John Truax NCAA Championship Tournament as a sophomore, junior and senior. In 1977, Truax won the Fall ECAC Championship. As a team, the Hawks’ greatest success came in the early 1960s and late 1970s. SJU won the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships in both 1963 and 1964, while Truax led SJU The 1962-63 SJU golf team went 11-1 during the powerhouses from 1975-78. regular season, won the Middle Atlantic Conference Title and qualified for the NCAA In 1982 Saint Joseph’s became a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference. SJU turned in its Tournament. However, the team decided not highest league finish in 2003, placing second overall. Left: Paul McDermitt (‘50) served as captain of the SJU Golf team; he also earned varsity letters in , bas- ketball, and track and field. He graduat- ed with more letters than anyone in Saint Joseph’s history, and was enshrined in the SJU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006.

Center Left: Mike (‘97) and Kevin (‘99) McDermott earned Atlantic 10 All- Conference honors a combined five times during their years on Hawk Hill. Younger brother Brian (‘04) also played golf for the Hawks.

Right: Jason Buccino (‘95) was named Atlantic 10 All-Conference in 1993 and 1995. Buccino, the McDermott broth- ers, Mark Parisi (‘96) and Billy Stewart (‘06) are the only Hawks to receive this honor multiple times.
