PERSMAP NN Marathon Rotterdam 2019 In het weekend van zaterdag 6 en zondag 7 april 2019 vindt de 39e editie van de NN Marathon Rotterdam plaats. Zowel de absolute wereldtop als duizenden lopers uit binnen- en buitenland ervaren hoe het is om te finishen op de beroemde Coolsingel. Het marathonweekend is op die manier een mix van (top)sport en volksfeest. Geen andere marathon in Nederland kan de sfeer in Rotterdam evenaren met ruim 950.000 enthousiaste toeschouwers langs het parcours. De toekenning van het IAAF Gold Label onderstreept de internationale waardering voor de hoge kwaliteit van de NN Marathon Rotterdam. Hardlopen is de derde sport van Nederland. Bijna 3,9 miljoen mensen in Nederland doen aan hardlopen, trimmen of joggen (Bron: Van Bottenburg-WJH Muller instituut). Maar liefst 1,6 miljoen mensen loopt minstens 1 keer per week. 1,3 miljoen mensen doet daarbij regelmatig mee aan hardloopevenementen. Hardlopen heeft een zeer positief imago, het is een sport voor doorzetters maar de prestatie - hoe vaak, hoe ver, hoe snel - verschilt per individu. Met zijn overwinning in 2016 verraste Kipserem de gevestigde orde toen hij een race neerzette waarin hij drie minuten sneller liep dan zijn beste tijd. In de eindfase van de marathon bleek Kipserem de sterkste en won met 11 seconden voorsprong op de nummer twee. Hij noteerde een tijd van 2.06.11. In het najaar van 2016 liep Kipserem de Marathon Eindhoven en noteerde daar met 2.08.00 een tweede plaats. Een jaar later liep Kipserem opnieuw in Eindhoven met als resultaat een derde plaats in 2.06.43, zijn beste jaartijd in 2017. Afgelopen jaar kwam de Keniaan terug naar Rotterdam en noteerde een tijd van 2.07.22, goed voor een vijfde plaats. Daarna zette Kipserem opnieuw een grote stap door in de marathon van Abu Dhabi een tijd van 2.04.04 te noteren. Met deze tijd verbeterde de 30-jarige Keniaan zijn beste tijd uit Rotterdam met ruim 2 minuten. Echter met een kleine kanttekening: Op dit moment (28 maart 2019) is deze tijd nog niet officieel erkend. De geruchten gaan dat het parcours ongeveer 200m te kort is geweest doordat mensen de route iets hebben verlegd. Echter zelfs als het parcours 200m korter was (ongeveer 35 seconden in tijd), heeft Kipserem een hele snelle tijd gelopen. Zijn tijd van 2.04.32 geldt nog steeds als wereldwijd de snelste tijd ooit door een junior gelopen (officieus wereldjuniorenrecord). Drie maanden na Dubai liep Mekonnen ook de London Marathon en noteerde daar een vijfde plaats met een tijd van 2.08.06. Later zei hij daarover dat hij nog niet hersteld was van Dubai en hiervan geleerd te hebben. In 2016 noteerde Mekonnen, als 21-jarige, opnieuw een snelle tijd in Dubai. Met zijn tijd van 2.04.46 bemachtigde de Ethiopiër toen een derde plaats. Mekonnen waagde de stap naar de marathon al op zo’n jongen leeftijd op advies van zijn coach. Nadat hij 5e was geworden op de 5.000m bij het WJK in Barcelona gaf die aan dat zijn toekomst op de lange afstand lag. Sinds hij Kenenisa Bekele en Tirunesh Dibaba bij de Olympische Spelen in Peking zag winnen heef hij de ambitie om in hun voetsporen te treden. Mekonnen woont in Addis Ababa, zit in het management bij Gianni Demadonna en wordt getraind door Gemedu Dedefo die een sterke groep atleten onder zijn hoede heeft.     PRESS RELEASE 13th October 2016 Festus Talam demonstrates the RunCzech Racing project at full strength in the DLL Eindhoven Marathon Festus Talam is not the first man to start a marathon as pacemaker and finish it as a winner, but he is simply the best. Talam, 21, was making his marathon debut in Eindhoven last Sunday, October 9. But, having completed his pacing duties at 35K, he carried on to smash a high-class elite field and record a superlative winning time of 2:06:26, the fastest ever for a debutant. Born in Baringo County in Kenya, Festus started to train at the age of 15 with a dream of having a better life for himself and his family, like thousands of other Kenyan runners. “I didn’t like running in the beginning, but my family encouraged me to train. They believed I had talent.” – recalled Festus. His first international race Festus organized by himself. “I just wanted to run a race overseas. They had a series of three races in two days, and I told them I will win all,” – said a smiling Festus, - “and I did.” Talam was drafted into the RunCzech Racing team in 2014 by the late Zane Branson and his management team. That same year, Festus made his international debut as a RunCzech Racing athlete in the Mattoni Karlovy Vary Half Marathon, where he finished second with a personal best of 1:02:25. That was followed by reasonable performances in various races in Europe. In 2015 for the first time Festus tried out the role of a pacemaker in the Eindhoven Marathon, and impressed everybody with a strong performance up to 32K, at 2:05 marathon pace.

    Girmay Birhanu Favoured at Scotiabank Ottawa Marathon by Paul Gains Three decades ago, the East African domination of marathon running began with both quality and quantity of great runners increasing exponentially. It can also be said they have shifted the goal posts when it comes to frequency of racing the ‘classic distance.’ When Ethiopia’s Girmay Birhanu lines up for the 2015 Scotiabank Ottawa Marathon May 24th - an IAAF Silver Label once again - it will be his fourth marathon in seven months. The astonishing rate would buckle the knees of most westerners but Birhanu serves up quality performances every time he races. With a personal best of 2:05:49 from the 2014 Dubai Marathon, where he placed 3rd, the now 28 year old has traveled the world seeking fast races and a pay cheque. Like many of his countrymen blessed with running talent, he intends to retire and start a business in a few years. On April 5th of this year, Birhanu won the Daegu Marathon in Korea with a time of 2:07:26, almost a minute ahead of his nearest rival. Lest one think that seven weeks between marathons is insane, we are reminded that a year ago Yemane Tsegaye came to Ottawa having won Daegu, then proceeded to smash the course and Canadian All- Comers’ record with a time of 2:06:54. “Yes I have recovered well and now started normal training,” Birhanu reports after being asked the obvious question. “Entoto, Sendafa, Sululta I like to train in all of those places. I am training with Gebretsadik Abraha (personal best of 2:06:21) and many other young athletes.

The team, recruited to compete against an accomplished international field, will challenge for the coveted olive wreath on Patriots’ Day, April 16, 2018. Four-time Olympian and 2017 TCS New York City Marathon champion Shalane Flanagan headlines the field along with two-time Olympic medalist and 2017 Bank of America Chicago Marathon champion Galen Rupp. Joining them are Olympians Desiree Linden, Dathan Ritzenhein, Abdi Abdirahman, Deena Kastor, and Molly Huddle, the latter of whom is the North American 10,000m record holder. Also returning to Boston are Jordan Hasay and Shadrack Biwott. Hasay placed third at the 2017 Chicago Marathon, and set the American marathon debut record at Boston this year when she ran 2:23:00. Biwott finished as the second American and fourth overall in Boston this year. Serena Burla, Ryan Vail, Sara Hall, Scott Smith, Kellyn Taylor, and Andrew Bumbalough will also compete on the John Hancock U.S. Elite Team at the 122nd running of the Boston Marathon. “The 2018 John Hancock U.S. Elite Team represents a dedicated group of athletes who have consistently challenged themselves to compete with great success on the world stage,” said John Hancock Chief Marketing Officer Barbara Goose.
