La Salle University is a liberal arts institution which combines the best of all educational worlds. With 3,500 men and women attending classes, the university offers a pleasant environment within close proximity to Philadelphia's cultural, social, and historic centers.

Founded by the Brothers of Christian Schools, La Salle is named for St. John Baptist de La Salle, founder of the Chris- tian Brothers. The institution, which began as a one-building academy in center city Philadelphia, is on an 85-acre, 36-building in Philadelphia's Germantown section.

The La Salle day and evening faculty numbers 400 full and part-time, with 45 different programs of study offered for students to major in. With a student-faculty ratio of 15-to-1 and an average

class size of 21 , students can be assured of as much personal guidance as needed from faculty members. This commitment to the individual has always been a major tenet of the Christian Brothers' goals for La Salle. La Salle's curriculum requires the completion of 120 credits, but allows wide flexibility in choosing courses. A limited number of requirements in English composition, literature, philosophy and religion provide greater opportunity for depth outside of the student's major field. The number of courses required by a department of its major never exceeds 17, leaving 8-10 courses as free electives that may be used to build a strong minor or diversify one's background. Various independent study programs provide the students with greater options. A thriving nationally-recognized Honors Program is available for gifted students. "La Salle in Europe" offers students the opportunity to spend their sophomore or junior year at the University of Fribourg, in Switzerland, while receiving full academic credit at La Salle. Programs are also available for a summer or a year of study in Spain. Among the major buildings on campus are the David Leo Lawrence Memorial Library; the Roland Holroyd Science Center with facilities for study and research in Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Physics, and Psychology; the Olney Hall classroom building; and the College Union which houses offices for most 1100 students in 11 residence halls and two apartment com- student activities and clubs and is the main meeting place on plexes. Theatre in 1971 . His sketches of local scenes frequently adorn his personal notes and Christmas cards. He has sung the National Anthem at a number of La Salle basketball games, and before games at Veterans Stadium.

Brother Patrick Ellis was installed as President of La Salle Col- lege on January 1, 1977. A member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools since 1946,

Brother Patrick first joined the La Salle staff in 1960 as a professor of English. A native of Baltimore, MD, Brother

Patrick graduated from Calvert Hall College High School in 1946, received an A.B. degree in English from Catholic University in

1951 , and earned his master's degree and doctorate in English from the University of Pennsylvania.

Speedy Morris' first season as a men's NCAA Division I Head

Coach ended as had his previous 1 8 seasons as a head coach, with a winning record. And as many of those previous seasons had ended, his team's last game was for a championship, last year the National Invitational Tournament in Madison Square Garden.

The 1986-87 Explorers faced on of the most difficult schedules in the country, playing eight teams which reached the NCAA Tournament and two others in the NIT field. The 20-13 final record was even more of a major achievement in light of the fact that only six players were used regularly during the last six weeks of the regular season and into the NIT.

Morris was one of the best-known high school coaches in the nation through 14 years at Philadelphia's Roman Catholic High School (347-82) and two years at The William Penn Charter School (40-14). His Roman Catholic teams won one Philadelphia

City Championship; six Philadelphia Catholic League titles; two National Catholic Tournament championships; and had four 30-victory seasons.

At Penn Charter, his 1983-84 team won the Philadelphia Inter- academic League championship, the school's first in 1 2 seasons.

His decision to become head coach of La Salle's women's basketball team in August, 1984 shocked the Philadelphia basketball community, but the results in two seasons were familiar: two 20-victory seasons; a Metro Atlantic Athletic Con- ference championship and NCAA Tournament berth in 1986; 13 new school team and individual records. And then, in March,

1986, he became the first Division I Head Coach to move from a women's position to a men's team.

With 20 wins in 1987, Morris' La Salle teams have had three A native of Philadelphia, Morris and his wife Mimi reside in consecutive seasons of 20 or more victories; as a Head Coach, Manayunk with their four children: Keith, a senior at The William his teams (high school and college) have won at least 20 games Penn Charter School; Brian, a junior at Archbishop Carroll High in all but one season since 1972-73, and that one season, School; Margaret Mary, a sophomore at John Hallahan Catholic 1982-83, his first Penn Charter team won 19 games. Game 2 was in Buffalo, NY, with Niagara, which like La Salle had beaten a Big East team (Seton Hall) in its first-round game.

The Purple Eagles led through most of the first half, 38-37 at halftime, and the Explorers were reeling, particularly Simmons, who had suf- fered a broken nose in a first-half collision with a Niagara elbow, and Koretz, who had shot 0-7 (5 three-pointers), while Joe Arlauckas had 17 points for Niagara.

NIT - 1987

March 24 LA SALLE 92 — Arkansas-Little Rock 73

Fifteen busloads of La Salle fans showed up at Madison Square Garden for the NIT semifinal, a matchup of the two smallest rosters

among NCAA Division I teams (La Salle had nine players in uniform, Arkansas-Little Rock eight). The outcome was decided early when Koretz (twice), Legler, and

Tarr (twice) scored La Salle's first five baskets on three-point shots, and when Tarr added a free throw after his second bucket, the lead

was 1 6-6. By halftime, it was La Salle, 45-34, with the Explorers hitting 8-14 three-pointers.

The lead was cut to nine points early in the second half, but nine straight Explorer points opened a 56-38 lead, and made the game's last 14:00 expendable. Legler finished with 26 points, Tarr 23 and 12 assists, Simmons 21

and then they all ducked from the crowd of students who once again charged onto the court at the final horn. La Salle was playing in a National Championship Game for thefirst time in 31 years, since losing the NCAA Championship to San Fran-

cisco in 1956. And the season which seemed over one month before March 21 was one incredible game longer. LA SALLE 70 — Illinois State 50 "It's a credit to the kids," said Head Coach Speedy Morris. But the Explorers would not get off another shot. Tarr, free momen-

tarily in the corner in three-point range, attempts to pass the ball back

to Legler, but the pass is stolen, and Southern Mississippi wins the

NIT title, 84-82. Simmons finished his brilliant freshman season with 34 points (10-10

free throws), 11 rebounds, and selection to the NIT all-star team. Tarr scored 14 points, and his 9 assists gave him 189 for the season, a new school record. Legler scored 12, Conlin 10 and Koretz8, finishing his career with 1382 points, 11th highest all-time at La Salle.

"I love these guys," said Conlin. "It does feel a little hopeless to

come all this way and come up empty. It's tough. I feel bad for the people at home on campus. A lot of people may think we don't ap- preciate the fans, but we do."

"We brought La Salle back where it used to be," said Simmons.

The support was for nine players, seniors Larry Koretz, Gary Jones and Ron Barnes; juniors Tim Legler, Rich Tarr and Ken Palczewski; sophomore Craig Conlin; and freshmen Lionel Simmons and Bob

Johnson. A team which thought its season had ended with a loss in the first round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament was playing for a National Championship.

The first half ended with Southern Mississippi leading, 39-34, but the inside game of Simmons and Conlin had kept the score that close.

The Explorers had shot just 37.5% from the field (12-32), and had just one of nine three-points attempts. Simmons had 13 points, Con- lin 8, and the pair had shot 50% (8-16) from the field. La Salle rallied for an early second-half lead, at 44-43, when Tarr hit a three-point shot, but that was the Explorer's last lead. The Golden Eagles went on a 16-4 tear to open a 59-48 lead with 10:15 to play.
